Histopathological survey of protozoa, helminths and acarids of imported and local psittacine and passerine birds in Japan.

A total of 534 psittacine and passerine birds consisting of 241 imported and 293 local birds were examined histologically. As a result, the following parasites were found: Giardia (86 cases), Knemido-coptes (26 cases), coccidia (10 cases), Ascaridia (6 cases), Cryptosporidium (5 cases), Sarcocystis (5 cases), tapeworm (4 cases), microfilaria (2 cases), Hexamita (1 case), and Spiroptera (1 case). High incidences of giardiasis and knemido-coptic infestation were detected in the local birds, but rarely in the imported birds. Giardial trophozoites were observed mainly in the duodenum of budgerigar

An Integrated Approach to Control Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis, Schistosomiasis, Intestinal Protozoa Infection, and Diarrhea: Protocol for a Cluster Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: The global strategy to control helminthiases (schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis) emphasizes preventive chemotherapy. However, in the absence of access to clean water, improved sanitation, and adequate hygiene, reinfection after treatment can occur rapidly. Integrated approaches might be necessary to sustain the benefits of preventive chemotherapy and make progress toward interruption of helminthiases transmission. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess and quantify the effect of an integrated control package that consists of preventive chemotherapy, commun

Diagnostic performance evaluation of ParaEgg for identifying intestinal helminthiasis: A comparative study with conventional copromicroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal helminthiasis remains a significant public health concern in Bangladesh, affecting both humans and animals. Conventional copromicroscopic methods, though widely used, often lack sensitivity, particularly in areas with low prevalence and intensity of infection. ParaEgg, a new diagnostic tool, has been developed to improve the efficiency of copromicroscopic detection. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of ParaEgg in detecting intestinal helminth infections in humans and dogs compared to commonly used traditional methods. METHODS: A cross-sectional stu

Helminth Diversity in Anurans from the State of Piauí, Northeastern Brazil: New Occurrences and Ecological Aspects in a Caatinga-Cerrado ecotonal area.

Ecological studies and inventories regarding parasitic helminths in Piauí remain limited. Thus, this study aimed to describe the helminth communities of anurans in the State of Piauí, Northeastern Brazil, and present an updated list of helminth parasites of anurans for this state. We examined 145 anurans of 20 species. Among them, 48 specimens distributed across 12 host species were parasitized. The helminth communities included 12 nematodes and one cestode. We found 20 dominant taxa in the communities, four codominant, and five unsuccessful species. Most helminth parasites exhibited aggregate

Amphibian helminths in Europe revisited: taxonomy, threats, and ecological insights.

Amphibians face numerous threats, including climate change, pollution, and emerging infectious diseases. While chytrid fungi have dominated recent research on amphibian pathogens, helminth parasites, despite their diversity and potential to impact amphibian health, remain underexplored, particularly in Europe. The goal of this review is to highlight the current state of knowledge on amphibian helminths in Europe, including current knowledge on species diversity, parasites' life history, and the availability of molecular data. We outline major challenges in amphibian helminthology and propose s

Gleasonian structure in the helminth metacommunity of the opossum Didelphis albiventris in two extremes of the Atlantic Forest.

Didelphis albiventris is the opossum with the largest geographic distribution in Brazil and has a wide spectrum of helminth parasites. This study aimed to describe the species composition and analyse the structure of helminth communities of D. albiventris in two extremes of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. The influence of host sex, body mass, age, helminth species richness and locality on the abundance and prevalence of the most prevalent helminth species was investigated. Ninety-five per cent of the animals were infected with at least one species. Nine helminth species were found: the nematode

100 Questions in Livestock Helminthology Research.

An elicitation exercise was conducted to collect and identify pressing questions concerning the study of helminths in livestock, to help guide research priorities. Questions were invited from the research community in an inclusive way. Of 385 questions submitted, 100 were chosen by online vote, with priority given to open questions in important areas that are specific enough to permit investigation within a focused project or programme of research. The final list of questions was divided into ten themes. We present the questions and set them briefly in the context of the current state of knowl

Gastrointestinal parasitism of Iowa coyotes in relation to age.

Taenia sp., Physaloptera sp., Ancylostoma caninum, Toxascaris leonina, and/or Trichuris vulpis were recovered from gastrointestinal tracts of 141 and 144 (97.9%) coyotes ranging from 1/2 to 8 1/2 years of age. Ancylostoma caninum exhibited a significant decline in both prevalence and mean number per coyote with increasing age of the host. Taenia sp. appeared with consistently high prevalence in all age classes. Physaloptera sp. and T. leonina showed general reductions in prevalence in all age classes. Physaloptera sp. and T. leonina showed general reductions in prevalence and mean nubmer with

Measuring heterogeneities in soil-transmitted helminth transmission and control.

The global effort over the past decade to control soil-transmitted helminths (STH) has resulted in communities with endemic infection reaching low prevalence levels suitable for the validation of elimination as a public health problem (EPHP), defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as <2% of infections classified as moderate or heavy intensity. The spatial scale in which this is validated is currently undefined. As the burden of STH infection decreases, the degree of aggregation of infection within individuals in a population increases. Identifying these remaining pockets of infection r

Cumulative host energetic costs of soil-transmitted helminth infection.

The health consequences of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are often attributed to parasite-caused tissue damage and nutrient loss, combined with immune energy costs. However, this view overlooks additional pathways by which infection can alter host energetics. Here, we take a first step toward defining this suite of energetic pathways and clarifying their cumulative impact on health. We consider how STH characteristics and human variation influence host-parasite interactions, as well as the initial and downstream energetic costs of infection. We conclude by discussing how complex b

The role of IgA in gastrointestinal helminthiasis: A systematic review.

Immunoglobulin-A (IgA) is an important mediator of immunity and has been associated with protection against several pathogens, although its role in gastrointestinal infections remains unclear. Then, the aim of this systematic review was to synthesize qualitative evidence in respect of IgA as mediator of protective immunity against gastrointestinal helminths. Following recommended guidelines, we searched for articles published between January 1990 and October 2019 that evaluated IgA levels and their association with gastrointestinal helminth infections. Twenty-five articles were included after

Eosinophils and helminth infection: protective or pathogenic?

Since the earliest descriptions of this enigmatic cell, eosinophils have been implicated in both protective and pathogenic immune responses to helminth infection. Nevertheless, despite substantial data from in vitro studies, human infections, and animal models, their precise role in helminth infection remains incompletely understood. This is due to a number of factors, including the heterogeneity of the many parasites included in the designation "helminth," the complexity and redundancy in the host immune response to helminths, and the pleiotropic functions of eosinophils themselves. This revi

Do parasite infections interfere with immunisation? A review and meta-analysis.

Immune responses to vaccination are heterogeneous between individuals; the same vaccine that provides protection in one circumstance may be ineffective in another. One factor that could influence the response to vaccination is concurrent or prior infection with unrelated parasites. Here, we review both the experimental and epidemiological literature on parasite-vaccine interactions, and present a meta-analysis of the published data. In total, our review returned 101 relevant articles, 50 of which met criteria for meta-analysis. Parasite factors potentially affecting vaccination include the typ

[Infection and invasion of humans in the Yamal Peninsula].

The helminthic fauna of vertebrates in the Yamal peninsula consists of 61 species: of them 2 species are monogenic, 6 are trematodes, 29 are cestodes, and 24 are nematodes. Twelve species of the 4 are antroponoses and 8 are zoonoses which may parasite on human beings. Human infection with some zoonoses is due to local habits of eating raw or undercooked meat of wild animals, domestic deers, and fish. These helminthic diseases include trichinosis, taeniasis, opisthorchiasis, diphyllobothriasis. On contacting with dogs and Arctic foxes, the population is infected with echinococciasis, alveococci
