Our goal was to recreate a passive hemagglutination inhibition (PHAI) test to diagnose brown recluse spider (BRS; Loxosceles reclusa) bite envenomation for treatment trials. A modified indirect hemagglutination test for the detection of treponemal antibodies was developed for use with finger-prick blood. The results obtained by analyzing 231 samples of market milk during the period of 1977-1978 are presented. The microbial index, E. coli titer, the presence of pathogenic and opportunistic microflora, as well as the presence of Sh. sonnei antigen were determined. In 39.3% of the milk samples the microbial index was found to be 4 x 10(6), and E. coli titer was 0.001 and lower. A passive hemagglutination test was developed to detect antibody response to Moraxella bovis in tears. Tannic acid-treated sheep erythrocytes were sensitized with sonicated antigen prepared from M bovis cultures. The test was found to be a relatively simple, specific, and reliable procedure for titrating antibodies in lacrimal secretions. The hemagglutination test could be a valuable method for seroepizootiologic investigation of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.
