Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are two typical categories of contaminants released from e-waste dismantling environments. In China, the body burdens of PCBs and PBDEs are associated with abnormal thyroid hormones in populations from e-waste dismantling sites, but the results are limited and contradictory. In this study, we measured the serum levels of PCBs and PBDEs and the thyroid hormone free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in 40 residents in an e-waste dismantling area and in 15 residents in a co

The effect of oral vitamin E therapy (800 IU/day) on correcting haematologic variables and on raising the plasma vitamin E level among glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficient subjects with history of hemolysis was studied. After 16 week period there was a positive response to vitamin E administration presented by sustained improvement in blood hemoglobin and plasma vitamin E concentrations. In the meanwhile, the vitamin E supplementation led to reduced reticulocytosis and control % hemolysis.

The level of Hb E (including Hb A2) was quantitated in 30 adult Hb E heterozygotes by cation exchange high performance liquid chromatography; in 20 subjects the alpha-globin gene status was determined by gene mapping and polymerase chain reaction methodology. A decrease in Hb E level was observed which was directly related to the type of alpha-thalassemia that was present; the lowest percentage of Hb E (and Hb A2) was 10.2%, seen in two persons with Hb Constant Spring (CS)-Hb H disease (alpha CS alpha/--). Similar analyses were made for several newborn babies with a Hb E heterozygosity, the Hb

Fourty eight malnourished infants were studied in regard to plasma vitamin E levels. The mean plasma vitamin E concentration was 0.41 mg/dL (+/- 0.20); the values ranged from less than 0.10 to 0.96. Only 4 children had an acceptable level of this vitamin (greater than 0.70 mg/dL). The possible interrelationship of vitamin E and red cell fragments in blood was investigated in 24 of the children. The data obtained do not suggest that a low plasmatic vitamin E level is not related to either, red cell fragmented or hemoglobin level.

Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activities were measured in 45 subjects, 15 each of beta 0-thalassaemia/haemoglobin (Hb) E disease, Hb H disease, and normal. The erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activities were significantly higher in the patients with beta 0-thalassaemia/Hb E and Hb H diseases than in the normal subjects. The increase of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activities is most likely due to abnormalities specific to thalassaemic red cells rather than an increased number of younger red cells for reticulocytes and nucleated red blood cells did not affect the enzyme activity. Red blood cell exchange (RBCEx) is frequently used in the management of patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and acute chest syndrome or stroke, or to maintain target hemoglobin S (HbS) levels. In these settings, RBCEx is a category I or II recommendation according to guidelines on the use of therapeutic apheresis published by the American Society for Apheresis. Matching donor red blood cells (RBCs) to recipient phenotypes (e.g., C, E, K-antigen negative) can decrease the risk of alloimmunization in patients with multi-transfused SCD. However, this may select for donors with a higher preval

A method is described for separating haemoglobin (Hb) E (beta 26 Gly----Lys) from Hb A2 (a normal minor Hb component in adult blood). The technique allows the distinction between subjects carrying beta-thalassaemia trait and patients who are simultaneously alpha-thalassaemic and heterozygous for Hb E, the standard electrophoretic pattern often being similar in these two circumstances. Complete separation between Hb E and Hb A2 (2 mm empty space in between) is obtained by isoelectric focusing in immobilized pH gradients in an ultra-narrow pH 7.55-7.65 gradient. The apparent pI values of the two

BACKGROUND: Increased oxidative stress leads to organ dysfunction in critically ill children. Vitamin E is a lipid-soluble vitamin that is protective against oxidative injury. We aimed to study the status of vitamin E and its association with malondialdehyde (MDA), an oxidative stress biomarker in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).
METHODS: This hospital-based cross-sectional study enrolled 60 children admitted to the PICU. Serum levels of vitamin E and MDA were determined at 24 ± 1 hour after admission. Patient details were obtained from medical records. Patients were divided into vit

A 21-year-old patient presented with a previous medical history of pallor, mild icterus, increased fatigue, low hemoglobin, and abnormal hemoglobin variant analysis with more than 70 transfusions. He was referred for genetic analysis to identify the pathogenic variations in the β-globin gene. Sanger's sequencing of the proband and his family revealed the presence of a novel frame shift variant HBB:c.163delG in a compound heterozygous state with hemoglobin E (HbE) (HBB:c.79G > A) variant. The father and the sibling of the patient were found to be normal for the HBB gene. Mother was found to be …

The influence of oral doses of iron on the hemoglobin regeneration of pregnancy anemias and postpartum anemias was examined. The examinations were carried out in 45 pregnant women and in 70 puerperae. Other hematologic parameters besides hemoglobin were determined before, and 4 and 6 weeks during treatment with 110 mg iron sulfate daily. In pregnancy anemias, hemoglobin regeneration took place at a much slower rate under the iron therapy than was the case in postpartum anemias. Postpartum anemias of medium severity require for elevating the hemoglobin values to 12.0 g% at iron absorption rate

beta (0)-Thalassaemia/Hb E disease is the most frequent beta-thalassaemia in Thailand. However, patients have a varying degree of anaemia. The difference in severity is attributed to a differential accumulation of unpaired alpha-globin chains, which is the net result of biosynthesis and catabolism. Turnover of newly synthesized globin chains in reticulocytes from beta(0) -thalassaemia/Hb E patients was determined. Proteolysis was ATP-independent and degraded only 10-15% of the radiolabelled globin during a 4-h incubation period at 37 degrees C and there was no difference in globin turnover in

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a major regulatory factor controlling red blood cell (RBC) production in humans. Although other humoral factors can alter the proliferation of committed early erythroid progenitors in vitro, no factor other than EPO has been clearly shown to induce proliferation of these cells in vivo. In a clinical trail of recombinant granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and recombinant EPO in patients with advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, we noted reticulocytosis and increases in hemoglobin when G-CSF was administered before the administration of EPO. Eight cases of haemoglobin E-beta.thalassaemia are described. Seven of them are natives of Punjab, a Northwest province of India, and one is a native of Rajasthan, a province adjacent to Punjab. Hb E is rarely encountered in Punjab, but beta-thalassaemia is relatively common. The interaction of Hb E with beta-thalassaemia resulted in a varying severity of phenotypic manifestations. An extraordinary feature in 3 out of 8 cases was the presence of a high percentage of Hb E (94 to 96%) and proportionately low Hb F (4 to 6%). The interacting thalassaemia in 5 patients was of beta0 type and in 3 pa
