The gut microbiome is integral to human health, yet research data to date have emphasized industrialized populations. Here, we performed large-scale shotgun metagenomic sequencing on 1,893 individuals from rural Honduras, providing the most comprehensive microbiome dataset from Central America. We identify a distinct microbial composition enriched in Prevotella species. Longitudinal analysis in 301 individuals reveals microbiome instability, with shifts in taxonomic diversity and metabolic potential, including changes associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. A…

A recently published article of this journal stated that informatics solutions can guide better public health decision-making during the COVID 19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) pandemic. Honduras is a country facing the COVID-19 pandemic with a weak health surveillance system while also fighting a dengue epidemic and the aftermath of two hurricanes that struck its territory in November 2020. In response, we as academics started a COVID-19 and Dengue Observatory combining several technological platforms and developing multidisciplinary research to help the country navigate the crisis. Mapping the p…

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) malformations, including neural tube defects (NTDs), are the second most common type of birth defects worldwide and are major causes of childhood disability and mortality. We report the first analysis of birth prevalence in Western Honduras of CNS malformations including NTDs over 6 consecutive years.
METHODS: Data from all patients with congenital CNS malformations and total live births for the period 2010-2015 were obtained through institution and regional registries from all 3 public referral hospitals in Western Honduras, representing 67 municipali…

The objective of this study was to investigate the incidence of acute flaccid paralysis in the pediatric population of Honduras over an 11-year period, determine what percentage of acute flaccid paralysis was Guillain-Barré syndrome, and identify the epidemiologic features of Guillain-Barré syndrome. There were 546 childhood cases of acute flaccid paralysis seen between January 1989 and December 1999 at the Hospital Escuela Materno-Infantil in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Of these cases with acute flaccid paralysis, 394 (72.2%) were diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome. Our incidence of Guillain-B…

Nutrition program planners often need information on the relative burden of malnutrition in different communities, or administrative units, … ity and validity of the school height census for small-area targeting of nutrition interventions in Honduras. Reliability was assessed by examining the stability of small-area estimates of mean height-for-age Z-score over five consecutive years from 1993 to 1997. Validity was assessed by comparing municipality-level mean height-for-age Z-score in the 2001 …

PURPOSE: Population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) are critical for national cancer control planning, yet few low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have quality PBCRs. The Central America Four region represents the principal LMIC region in the Western hemisphere. We describe the establishment of a PBCR in rural Western Honduras with first estimates for the 2013-2017 period.
METHODS: The Western Honduras PBCR was established through a collaboration of academic institutions and the Honduras Ministry of Health for collection of incident cancer data from public and private health services. Da…

In recent years, reports of NAP1/RT027/ST01 epidemic strains of Clostridium difficile producing outbreaks of healthcare-associated diarrhea have increased in America and Europe. We cultivated multidrug-resistant NAP1/RT027/ST01 strains from the FQR2 linage from TcdA/TcdB+ stool samples obtained from patients in two Honduran hospitals. The PFGE macrorestriction patterns of two of the isolates were new. These bacteria were toxigenic and induced with different magnitude classical cytopathic effects on HeLa cells. Besides their resistance to twelve antibiotics, including to clindamycin, fluoroquin

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is a major health problem in Central America. In Honduras, with an incidence rate of 81/100,000, it is an increasingly common cause of morbidity and hospitalization. This study was conducted to examine drug-resistant tuberculosis and prevalence of infection with atypical mycobacteria in Honduran patients with suspected pulmonary tuberculosis.
METHODS: Pulmonary specimens from 235 Honduran patients with suspected tuberculosis were examined by acid-fast smears and culture. The 95 mycobacterial strains isolated were identified to species level and drug susceptibility tes…

The genus Autolyca Stål, 1875 (Pseudophasmatidae: Pseudophasmatinae: Anisomorphini) comprises several species endemic to Nuclear Central America. Here, we report the first record of Autolyca pallidicornis Stål, 1875 from Honduras, based on specimens from the Celaque Mountains and historical, previously unreported museum material from a nearby locality in Gracias housed in the Field Museum of Natural History (FMNH), Chicago. The species can be distinguished by its characteristic shiny black coloration, robust abdomen, orange-yellowish antennae, and distinctive genital structures. Previously, A.…

Background Medical education is essential for training competent healthcare professionals capable of addressing evolving patient needs. Faculty development plays a crucial role in improving teaching quality and supporting competency-based education (CBE), particularly in Honduras, where reforms aim to modernize medical curricula. Despite a long history of medical training, formal, standardized faculty development programs remain limited, with many instructors relying on informal, unstandardized training. This study evaluates the impact of a structured faculty development program designed to st…

BACKGROUND: The frequency of deficient variants of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDd) is particularly high in areas where malaria is endemic. The administration of antirelapse drugs, such as primaquine, has the potential to trigger an oxidative event in G6PD-deficient individuals. According to Honduras´ national scheme, malaria treatment requires the administration of chloroquine and primaquine for both Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum infections. The present study aimed at investigating for the first time in Honduras the frequency of the two most common G6PDd variants.

Malaria continues to be a major threat to public health in tropical regions, primarily affecting sub-Saharan Africa but also Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Malaria cases in Honduras have seen a significant decline and the country aims to eliminate the disease by 2030. This study examines the genetic diversity of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax in Honduras using four molecular markers (Pfama1, Pfglurp, Pvmsp3α, and Pvmsp3β), and the chloroquine resistance marker pfcrt in the context of the elimination phase. Our findings indicate that P. falciparum populations in Honduras …

We identify both canonical and novel human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-HIV associations, providing a first step toward improved understanding of HIV immune control among the understudied Honduras Mestizo population. Our results are relevant to understanding the protective or detrimental effects of HLA subtypes in Latin America because their unique HLA diversity poses challenges for designing vaccines against HIV and interpreting results from such vaccine trials. Likewise, the description of the HLA profile in an understudied population that shows a unique HLA immunogenetic background is not only r…

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a life-threatening invasive fungal infection most commonly observed in immunocompromised patients. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, a growing number of Mucorales associated infections, now termed COVID-19 associated mucormycosis (CAM), have been reported. Despite an increase in fatality reports, no cases of rhino-orbital CAM complicated with gangrenous bone necrosis have been described in the literature to date.
CASE: A 56-year-old male with a recent COVID-19 diagnosis developed rhino-orbital mucormycosis after 22 days of treatment with dexamethasone. Cultures and

Scaling up coverage of routine cervical screening in low-resource settings must be accompanied by efforts to retain women throughout the screening cascade and continuum of care, including adequate follow-up of abnormal results. The Scale-Up Project implemented human papillomavirus (HPV) testing for cervical cancer screening within public-sector health facilities in Honduras between 2015 and 2019. Women who were HPV-positive but did not have visually confirmed cervical lesions upon visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA-negative) were instructed to return to the health center after 1 year for …

OBJECTIVE: Describe the rationale and methodology of the Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness applied in surveys at the national level in 2011-2013 in Argentina, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay.
METHODS: The survey includes individuals aged 50 years and older, minimizing required sample sizes, which vary from 2 000 to 5 000 people. It uses straightforward sampling and examination techniques, and data analysis is automatic and does not require a statistician. It is relatively inexpensive, as it does not take a long time, does not require expensive ophthalmic equipment, and …

Non-operative management (NOM) of acute appendicitis has been validated by trials such as Appendicitis Acuta and Comparison of Outcomes of Antibiotic Drugs and Appendectomy, with treatment failure rates of approximately 25-30% within one year, raising hopes that a less invasive approach could become the standard of care. However, the conditions underpinning these trials, such as early presentation, reliable imaging, uninterrupted access to antibiotics, structured follow-up, and immediate surgical backup, are not consistently available in Honduras. Up to 54% of patients at a Honduran tertiary c…

Honduras was one of the Central American countries most severely hit by Hurricane Mitch. Torrential rains and heavy flooding created conditions conducive to a leptospirosis outbreak in the country. A group of Cuban scientists studied 68 patients from the Department of Corts - one of the country's hardest hit areas - presenting clinical and epidemiological profiles indicative of leptospirosis. Blood and serum samples were taken from all subjects. A microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was used to identify Leptospira strains and to assess protection conferred by vax-SPIRAL® (Cuban leptospirosis…
