[Investigation on human hookworm infections in Anhui Province from 2014 to 2015].

OBJECTIVE: To understand the current status and changing tendency of human hookworm infections in Anhui Province. METHODS: According to the unified national survey scheme, a total of 48 survey sites were sampled from 16 counties (cities) in 4 ecological regions of Anhui Province using a stratified cluster random sampling method from 2014 to 2015. The hookworm eggs were detected in the fecal samples from permanent residents at ages of over one year living in the survey sites using a modified Kato-Katz thick smear method, and the subjects'health knowledge and behaviors were investigated using q…

Ternidens deminutus Revisited: A Review of Human Infections with the False Hookworm.

Ternidens deminutus, the false hookworm of humans and non-human primates, represents a truly neglected intestinal helminth infection. The similarity of the eggs of this nematode to those of hookworm both presents a diagnostic challenge and a potential confounder in prevalence surveys of soil transmitted helminths (STH) in regions where T. deminutus is found. The helminth infects non-human primates throughout Africa and Asia, but reports of human infection are almost exclusively found in eastern and southern Africa. Historically, an infection prevalence up to 87% has been reported from some par

The epidemiology of human hookworm infections in the southern region of Mali.

Two surveys of hookworm (Necator americanus) infections, conducted three years apart (December 1994 and January 1998) in a village in the Si … nfections than expected whilst others were less infected, suggesting compound-related clustering of hookworm infections. The use of footwear increased with age but there was no significant relationship between the extent of use of footwear and the abundance of hookworm infection. Eyesight deteriorated with age and impaired vision was particularly prominent among the …

Field trials of pyrantel pamoate (Combantrin) in Ascaris, hookworm and Trichuris infections.

In a trial involving 185 school children, pyrantel pamoate (Combantrin) at a dose of 20 mg/kg body weight for 1-3 days was found to be very effective against the Ascaris and moderately effective against the hookworm, with mean cure rates ranging from 93.3-96.7% and 53.3-73.3% respectively. No apparent action against the Trichuris was detected, a mean cure rate of between 34.2 and 46.1% being only slightly, but not significantly, better than the 33.8% cure for a placebo-treated control group. Single and multiple doses of the suspension and tablet formulations of the drug were well tolerated. Fr

Clinical trial of flubendazole on hookworm, Trichuris trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides infections.

Flubendazole, a parafluoro analoque of mebendazole, was given to 89 service men with hookworm, Trichuris trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides infections. The drug was given either as two doses of 300 mg at 12 hour interval (regimen A) or as two doses of 300 mg at 24 hour interval (regimen B). At four weeks follow-up the mean percentage egg reduction for hookworm was 88% and 96% in regimen A and B respectively. There were too few cases of Trichuris and Ascaris infection to allow comparison of the two regimens, but flubendazole appeared to be as effective and the single day regimen more convenient

Distribution of ascariasis, trichuriasis and hookworm infections in Ogun State, Southwestern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Ascariasis, Trichuriasis and Hookworm infections poses a considerable public health burden in Sub-Saharan Africa, and a sound understanding of their spatial distribution facilitates to better target control interventions. This study, therefore, assessed the prevalence of the trio, and mapped their spatial distribution in the 20 administrative regions of Ogun State, Nigeria. METHODS: Parasitological surveys were carried out in 1,499 households across 33 spatially selected communities. Fresh stool samples were collected from 1,027 consenting participants and processed using ether co…

Cognitive and Microbiome Impacts of Experimental Ancylostoma ceylanicum Hookworm Infections in Hamsters.

Hookworms are one of the most prevalent and important parasites, infecting ~500 million people worldwide. Hookworm disease is among the leading causes of iron-deficiency anemia in the developing world and is associated with significant growth stunting and malnutrition. In humans, hookworms appear to impair memory and other forms of cognition, although definitive data are hard to come by. Here we study the impact of a human hookworm parasite, Ancylostoma ceylanicum, on cognition in hamsters in a controlled laboratory setting. We developed tests that measure long-term memory in hamsters. We find

Copro-molecular identification of infections with hookworm eggs in rural Lao PDR.

The prevalence of hookworm eggs in fecal samples, by modified cellophane thick-smear technique, was found to be 30.0% (61/203 samples) in Lahanam Village, Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR. The hookworm eggs were morphologically heterogeneous, so that identification was confirmed by copro-PCR with specific primers for hookworms and Trichostrongylus spp.; 12 samples were positive for Necator americanus, 19 for Ancylostoma spp., with one mixed infection of both. Sequencing of the Ancylostoma spp. copro-PCR products found A. duodenale, and also the animal hookworms, A. caninum and A. ceylanicum. More

Distribution and clustering of Oesophagostomum bifurcum and hookworm infections in northern Ghana.

Human Oesophagostomum infections are locally common in northern Ghana. The present study describes the results of a cross-sectional survey involving 1011 subjects, selected by a compound-based random sampling method from 1227 compounds in 24 villages. Selected persons were examined by both Kato and coproculture methods. Hookworm-like eggs, representing ova of Oesophagostomum bifurcum and hookworm were detected in 87.5% of the Kato smears. The geometric mean egg count of the infected subjects was 1018. Upon coproculture, third-stage larvae of O. bifurcum and hookworm were detected in 53.0% and

Association between Schistosoma mansoni and hookworm infections among schoolchildren in Côte d'Ivoire.

Infections with Schistosoma mansoni and hookworms are widespread in sub-Saharan Africa and the burden of disease associated with both parasites is enormous. Although there is a large overlap in their geographic distribution, little is known about the association between S. mansoni and hookworm infections and the underlying mechanisms. We explored this association among 325 schoolchildren from Côte d'Ivoire, by screening multiple stool specimens over consecutive days. We found a highly significant positive association between S. mansoni and hookworm infections with an adjusted odds ratio of 2.2…
