Hormones and the aging process.

For more than a century, it has been suggested that failure of the secretions of the ductless glands leads to aging. Replacement of these hormones has been suggested as a method of slowing the aging process. Clearly, modern research has demonstrated that the concept of a "hormonal fountain of youth" is predominantly mythology. The best evidence for hormonal replacement is vitamin D and estrogen replacement to prevent hip fractures. Other than that, treatment should be limited to hormone replacement in persons who have endocrine disease.

Effects of hormones on sleep.

Administration of hormones to humans and animals results in specific effects on the sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) and nocturnal hormone secretion. Studies with pulsatile administration of various neuropeptides in young and old normal controls and in patients with depression suggest they play a key role in sleep-endocrine regulation. Growth hormone (GH)-releasing hormone (GHRH) stimulates GH and slow wave sleep (SWS) and inhibits cortisol, whereas corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) exerts opposite effects. Changes in the GHRH:CRH ratio contribute to sleep-endocrine aberrations during norm…

Adverse effects of thyroid hormones.

The adverse health effects of thyrotoxicosis have been carefully documented and most practitioners are familiar with the clinical consequences for the patient. Until recently, many patients experienced the adverse effects of excessive thyroxine dosages. Which can now be avoided by the application of highly sensitive immunometric assays for monitoring serum thyrotrophin (thyroid-stimulating hormone; TSH) levels. However, sensitive monitoring of serum thyrotrophin levels has led to the frequent recognition of biochemical subclinical hyperthyroidism (isolated suppression of thyrotrophin). Because

Menstruation, sex hormones, and migraine.

All women with migraine are susceptible to the effects of hormonal changes. For a minority with menstrual migraine, fluctuating hormones of the normal ovarian cycle are a specific trigger, particularly during perimenopause. The author proposes that the term menstrual migraine should be restricted to migraine attacks occurring on day 1 +/- 2 days of the menstrual cycle with freedom from migraine during the rest of the cycle. This definition is compatible with the mechanism of estrogen withdrawal. Other mechanisms such as prostaglandin release also may be important for some women. The changing h…

Neurohypophysial hormones and circadian rhythm.

In conclusion, neurohypophysial hormone levels in human plasma and in the plasma, pituitary, and hypothalamus of the rat show clear rhythms over the 24-hour period. These are not true circadian rhythms, as they may be modified by a number of factors, including the stage of the estrous cycle and hydrational status. There is evidence to suggest that the patterns observed may in part reflect the action of the pineal product melatonin. Pinealectomy influences the pattern of hormone release, while melatonin and its analogues inhibit hormone release, although the major circulating metabolite has no

Exogenous hormones and human cancer.

The importance of the role of endogenous hormones in carcinogenesis of the breast, endometrium, ovary and testis is well known. Exogenous hormones have become an important issue in human carcinogenesis because the number of case reports suggesting its relation to iatrogenic hormone usage is increasing due to the increased hormone consumption from various medical treatments. The risk of adenoma and carcinoma of the liver and endometrium caused by oral contraceptives has been clarified after relatively long-term experience. We have reviewed the risk from exogenous hormones, such as oral contrace…

Pituitary resistance to thyroid hormones.

Pituitary thyroid hormone resistance (PRTH) refers to a particular form of thyroid hormone refractoriness that is accompanied by peripheral hyperthyroidism, as only the TSH-secreting pituitary cells appear to be resistant to the effects of thyroid hormones. The presence of PRTH is suspected and diagnosed on the basis of the finding of high free thyroid hormone levels along with unsuppressed TSH, clinical signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism and values of at least one of the parameters evaluating peripheral thyroid hormone action in the hyperthyroid range. However, most patients with PRTH pres…

Sex hormones and cardiovascular risk.

Inspection of the age-incidence curve of ischaemic heart disease in both sexes shows an increase in slope for women around the menopause, approaching that of men at older ages. Although the increase is likely to be related to the menopause, epidemiological evidence is not defined. Likewise, there is some suggestion that reproductive factors may be related to the subsequent risk of cardiovascular diseases, since a few studies found an elevated risk in women with an earlier first birth. In terms of prevention and public health considerations, treatments via exogenous hormones are, however, much …

Fetal and maternal thyroid hormones.

It is well known that insufficient production of thyroid hormones during the fetal and neonatal period of development may result in permanent brain damage unless treatment with thyroid hormone is instituted very soon after birth. But congenital hypothyroidism is not the only situation in which brain damage may be related to insufficient thyroid function. Cretinism is the most severe manifestation of iodine deficiency disorders found in areas where iodine intake is greatly reduced. Some of the manifestations of cretinism suggest that the insult to the developing brain starts earlier than in the…

[Parenteral replacement of thyroid hormones].

Because of the development in parenteral nutrition, the replacement of thyroid hormones in hypothyroid or athyroid patients under intravenous hyperalimentation has become a new problem to be considered. We tried parenteral replacement of the hormones, intravenously or by enema, in three such patients. Two patients, 54 y-o and 64 y-o females, who underwent laryngo-esophago-thyroidectomy for cervical esophageal cancer or thyroid cancer, had replacement with intravenous l-thyroxine with an initial dose of 100 micrograms/day for 9 and 22 days, respectively. Another patient, a 56 y-o female with dy…

Thyroid hormones and the liver.

Close relationships exist between the liver and the thyroid. The liver is important in the transport, metabolism, storage and excretion of thyroid hormones as well as being an important site for hormone activity. Liver disease alters thyroid function and thyroid function tests at all levels of the hypothalamic-pituitary-peripheral axis. Since thyroid disorders occur more frequently than expected in certain kinds of liver disease, awareness of the limitations of thyroid function tests in this situation are necessary. Drugs active in controlling hyperthyroidism may themselves cause liver disease…

Are female sex hormones teratogenic?

An analysis of available epidemiologic data leads the present reviewers to conclude that the use of exogenous hormones during human pregnancy has not been proved to cause developmental abnormality in nongenital organs and tissues. This conclusion is further supported by the animal laboratory data. The preponderance of evidence at this writing indicates a lack of causal association between hormonal use during pregnancy and nongenital malformation of the offspring. The quality of the epidemiologic data does not, at this time, permit a definitive conclusion that sex hormones during pregnancy may …
