A patient experienced allergic contact dermatitis on two occasions two months apart as a result of wearing the same brand of polyvinyl chloride oxygen cannula. In one instance the cannula was removed and not replaced, as continuing oxygen was unnecessary; on the other occasion the original cannula was replaced by a cannula of another brand. In both cases the dermatitis disappeared after removal of the original cannula. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the risk of operative management of children with intussusception varies by hospital pediatric caseload.
DESIGN: A cohort of all children with intussusception in Washington State from 1987 through 1996.
SETTING: All hospitals in Washington State.
METHODS: Five hundred seventy children with a hospital discharge diagnosis of intussusception were identified. Sixty-two were excluded because of missing data. Procedure codes for operative management and radiologic management were also identified.

We determined the natural history of the colonization of our hospital's potable water by culturing water approximately biweekly from 20 sites throughout the hospital for 4 years. Overall, 545 (24.7%) of the 2200 samples grew Legionella pneumophila. During hyperchlorination, 11.7% of the samples were positive while 41.6% were positive in the absence of chlorination. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of the overutilization of indwelling urinary catheters in the emergency department on the development of nosocomial urinary tract infection.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
SETTING: 638-bed tertiary-care hospital.
PATIENTS: 118 consecutive medical and surgical admissions from the emergency department collected over 3 weeks.

Physicians' knowledge of dosage and cost differences between injectable and oral histamine H2-receptor antagonists (HRAs) and attitudes toward pharmacist-initiated route conversion of HRAs were assessed. Following an extensive protocol, an investigation on the prevalence of nosocomial infections was carried out in May 1988 in 33 hospitals from Catalonia. A total number of 7434 patients were included. Communitary infections were also tabulated. The prevalence for nosocomial infections was 12.1% and the incidence of communitary infections was about 17.1%. A child life program was found to be effective in reducing anxiety and enhancing the self-esteem of a small number (N = 5) of long-term pediatric patients. In contrast, the anxiety of a group of control subjects (N = 5) increased from pretest to posttest whereas their self-esteem remained stable. A moderately significant difference in anxiety level was noted between groups at posttest. There are fewer studies on bacteremia coming from the community hospital, where the practicing family physician is likely to see this problem, than from the university hospital. The hypothesis of this study was that patterns of bacteremia would be different between the two types of hospitals. Two hundred four patient episodes of culture-proven bacteremia from two analogous community hospitals were reviewed. Between 1877 and 1903 something extraordinary in the history of health services happened in a small north Kent town. The number of hospital beds in Dartford increased a staggering 60-fold to reach almost 10,000, this in a local population of just over 20,000.
