The permanent supportive housing overdose prevention project.

BACKGROUND: Overdose is a large concern in permanent supportive housing (PSH), yet has been sparsely addressed in research or practice. We previously developed a technical assistance intervention to empower PSH buildings to implement evidence-based overdose prevention practices. We now describe delivery of and participation in this novel intervention. METHODS: Intervention delivery occurred over four six-month periods from November 2023-January 2026. The six-month intervention included a written implementation Toolkit, individually-tailored practice facilitation sessions, and monthly learning…

Timeliness of injury care and housing status.

BACKGROUND: Unhoused people have longer hospital lengths of stays than housed. This study examined if unhoused people have less timely injury care than housed. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adult injury encounters from January 2015 - December 2022 at the only level 1 trauma center in an urban county. We merged the trauma registry with a county-wide integrated dataset to reliably identify our primary exposure: housing status in the fiscal year of injury. The primary outcome was time to the operating room in hours. Secondary outcomes were emergency department (ED) length…

Solving the housing crisis in Nunavut, Canada.

In Canada, there are vast differences between the state of accommodation/housing, health, social inequalities, education and economic conditions for people in the northern and southern regions of the country. Overcrowding in Inuit Nunangat is a direct result of the promises made by past government policy that led to Inuit people settling in sedentary communities in the North on the understanding that they would be provided with social welfare. However, these welfare programmes proved to be either insufficient or non-existent for Inuit people. Therefore, Inuit are living in overcrowded homes in…

Unstable Housing and Kidney Disease: A Primer.

Stable housing is essential for health. Over 580,000 Americans experienced homelessness during one night in 2020, and over 37 million households spend over 30% of their income on housing. Unstable housing has been associated with mortality, acute care utilization, communicable and non-communicable diseases, a higher risk of kidney disease, and kidney disease progression. In this review, we define various forms of unstable housing, provide an overview of the interaction between unstable housing and health, and discuss existing evidence associating housing and kidney disease. We provide historic…

Disaster housing: Lessons learned from Hurricane Harvey.

In 2017, Hurricane Harvey struck the State of Texas, and became the first Category 4 hurricane to strike the USA since 2005. Approximately 178 cm of rain fell over Texas during a seven-day period, with sustained winds of 209 km/h. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requested the State of Texas to administer a temporary housing programme called the Direct Housing Mission. This was administered by FEMA by the Texas General Land Office (GLO) with technical and financial support from FEMA. As the first state to run this programme, the GLO has captured lessons learned and a way forward …

Supporting veterans' transitions from permanent supportive housing.

OBJECTIVES: Little research has assessed the nature of veterans' departures from permanent supportive housing (PSH), which may be of positive valence (e.g., moving into more independent housing). This study aimed to identify participants appropriate for "graduation" from PSH and how to support their transitions. METHOD: This mixed methods study used qualitative data from PSH program staff, 445 PSH participants' responses to a survey assessing their experiences and administrative records, and qualitative data from a subsample of 10 participants who graduated from the program. Participants were…

Social Determinants of Health: Housing and Income.

Social determinants of health such as housing and income have a large impact on mental health. Community-based initiatives have worked to address access to housing, prevent homelessness and assist people who are homeless with mental health problems. There have been several large research projects to tease out multiple subgroups such as youth and veterans and other individuals experiencing long-term homelessness. The issue of poverty has been addressed by exploring issues related to employment. The use of social enterprises is a promising practice to address issues around poverty, social inclus…

Aging in place within permanent supportive housing.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether and how permanent supportive housing (PSH) programs are able to support aging in place among tenants with serious mental illness. DESIGN: Investigators used a mixed-method approach known as a convergent parallel design in which quantitative and qualitative data are analyzed separately and findings are merged during interpretation. Quantitative analysis compared 1-year pre-residential and post-residential outcomes for PSH program enrollees, comparing adults aged 35-49 years (n = 3990) with those aged 50 years or older (n = 3086). Case study analysis usin…

[Housing conditions and allergic sensitization in children].

Genetic predisposition and indoor exposure to allergens-especially during the very early childhood years are major factors for the development of allergic diseases later in life. The present study analyzed the association between allergic sensitization in children aged 5 to 14 years and residing since birth in homes of different building types. A cross-sectional study of 811 children aged 5 to 14 years who resided in the same home since birth investigated indoor factors using a questionnaire and allergic sensitization assessed by skin prick test. The prevalence of allergic sensitization was co

Housing in early life and later mortality.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The aim was to examine the influence of domestic crowding and household amenities in early life on later mortality from all causes and specifically from stomach cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and rheumatic heart disease. DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of people whose houses had been surveyed in 1936 and whose household size was known from the 1939 census. Subjects were followed through the National Health Service Central Register from 1951 to 1989. SETTING: The housing survey had been carried out in the midland town of Chesterfield. SUBJECTS:…

Association Between Receipt of a Continuum of Supportive Housing Services and Mortality Among Veterans With Experience of Housing Instability.

INTRODUCTION: Veterans face elevated risk of suicide and homelessness, with housing instability being a significant, independent risk factor among this population. Addressing housing instability through primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention services is crucial for improving health and mortality outcomes, though research remains limited. The objective of this study is to assess the association between receipt of primary, secondary, and tertiary homelessness prevention services and risk of suicide and all-cause mortality among Veterans within 24 months of experiencing housing instability. …

Housing stability, employment, and survival behaviors among young mothers experiencing homelessness: A randomized controlled trial of a housing intervention.

The present study examined the efficacy of a comprehensive housing intervention (Ecologically-Based Treatment - temporary housing and supportive services) on the longitudinal co-occurring patterns of housing stability, employment, and survival behaviors among a sample of young mothers experiencing homelessness. Participants were randomly assigned to: (1) temporary housing + supportive services (n = 80), (2) housing-only (n = 80), or (3) services as usual (n = 80). Follow-up assessments were completed at 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-months post-baseline. Findings showed that both Ecologically-Based Treat…

Identifying Graduation Rates and Practices in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program.

Graduation from permanent supported housing program (PSH) is an important part of individuals' recovery and rehabilitation, yet little research has examined this process. We examined graduation rates, practices and policies in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs-Housing and Urban Development Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program, the largest PSH program in the United States. We used HUD-VASH administrative data from Fiscal Years 2016-2020 to summarize graduation rates from the program. Using a template analysis approach to open-ended online surveys from 65 HUD-VASH program managers, we ide…

Long-term housing subsidies and SSI/SSDI income: Creating health-promoting contexts for families experiencing housing instability with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Though disability and housing instability are discussed separately in public health literature, few studies address families at their intersection. As a result, little is known about families who experience both homelessness and disability, how many receive disability benefits like SSI and SSDI, or the influence of those benefits on health-promoting outcomes like housing stability and self-sufficiency. Moreover, no previous research compares the ability of different housing and service interventions to increase disability benefit access. OBJECTIVE: We examine relationships between…

The intersection of housing and mental well-being: Examining the needs of formerly homeless young adults transitioning to stable housing.

We examine the challenges formerly homeless young adults (FHYAs) face after they transition out of homelessness. Considering the adversities FHYAs face, it is unclear how transitioning to stable housing may affect their mental well-being or what types of stressors they may experience once housed. This study investigates the social environment young adults encounter in their transition to stable housing and examines trauma and social coping predictors of mental health symptoms in a sample of FHYAs to generate new knowledge for better intervening to meet their needs. Data were obtained from REAL…

Permanent Housing Placement and Reentry to Services Among Family Recipients of Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) Assistance.

The Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) provided individuals and families who were either at-risk or currently experiencing homelessness with time-limited financial and housing support services. Evaluations of HPRP showed a high rate of family placement into permanent housing. However, little research has explored immediate and longitudinal outcomes for families enrolled in HPRP. Using Homeless Management Information System data from Indianapolis, Indiana, we examined demographic and program-related predictors of families entering permanent housing and their risk of ree…
