Infants with hydranencephaly are presumed to have a reduced life expectancy, with a survival of several weeks to months. Rarely, patients with prolonged survival have been reported, but these infants may have had other neurologic conditions that mimicked hydranencephaly, such as massive hydrocephalus or holoprosencephaly. We report two infants with prenatally acquired hydranencephaly who survived for 66 and 24 months. We reviewed published reports to ascertain the clinical and laboratory features associated with survival of more than 6 months. This review demonstrates that prolonged survival u…

A case of hydranencephaly was demonstrated antenatally by ultrasound and correlated with ventriculography and computed cranial tomography. Prenatal diagnosis of intracranial abnormalities by careful attention to intracranial anatomy is possible and can facilitate obstetrical management.

The purpose of this report is to describe the prenatal sonographic findings in fetuses with hydranencephaly diagnosed during the early stages of disease. Four cases with characteristics of hydranencephaly were retrospectively identified from 2 Latin American fetal medicine referral centers. Information on maternal demographics, sonographic findings, antenatal courses, and pregnancy outcomes was retrieved from the ultrasound reports and medical records. Cases were diagnosed between 21 and 23 weeks' gestation. The sonographic findings were similar in all cases and included absent cerebral hemisp…

Hydranencephaly is a severe condition of brain characterized by the almost complete absence of the cerebral hemispheres with the thalamus, cerebellum and brainstem being preserved. This paper reports hydranencephaly in a 3-month-old boy. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed the condition and an auditory evoked potential study which was performed in order to investigate residual brain function. They showed normal auditory brainstem function but no appearance of other auditory evoked potentials originating from the higher brain.

A 28-week male fetus with the cardinal signs of the lethal multiple pterygium syndrome (multiple pterygia, congenital joint contractures, lung hypoplasia, facial abnormalities, and hydrops) is reported here. In addition, he had hydranencephaly, an anomaly not yet reported in this group of conditions. This potentially new form of the lethal multiple pterygium was detected prenatally by ultrasound examination. In discussing the case, we consider the probable autosomal recessive inheritance pattern and raise questions about the etiology and heterogeneity of this syndrome.

Arachnoid collapse is a previously unreported complication of endoscopic choroid plexus coagulation (ECPC) treatment of hydranencephaly and is demonstrated in this case report. The variable anatomy found in hydranencephaly supports the use of ECPC as the preferred treatment option. However, the same anatomical anomalies predispose the procedure to this unique complication. A brief literature review of hydranencephaly has also been performed and is reported through the discussion. Neurosurgeons must be aware of this very dangerous complication and a discussion of preventative measures are made.…

The authors report a case of hydranencephaly which could result from a massive intake of oestrogens in a 18 week-gravid mother. After a brief clinical summary, the role of oestrogens in the triggering of a fetal circulatory disorder is discussed.

Hydranencephaly is traditionally attributed to prenatal vascular disruption; however, chronic prenatal alcohol exposure may contribute through neurotoxicity, placental dysfunction, oxidative stress, and vascular injury. Given the biological plausibility of this association, alcohol abstinence during pregnancy remains essential, and further studies are required to clarify its role in hydranencephaly.

At 7 to 13 days PI chick embryos manifested marked hydranencephaly, cerebellar hypoplasia, arthrogryposis, and scoliosis, with the highest incidences of 86.7%, 73.3%, 80.0%, and 20.0%, respectively. At 4 days PI the viral antigen was found in nerve cells, gitter cells in mild necrotic foci of the central nervous sy …

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in a pregnant woman may have profound adverse effects on the fetus or neonate. A rare congenital syndrome has been associated with intrauterine infection with HSV. An infant with the congenital herpes syndrome is described, the characteristic clinical and laboratory features associated with this syndrome are summarized, and other possible manifestations of herpes virus infection in the newborn are reviewed.

Fetal ventriculomegaly is a common referral for prenatal MRI, with possible etiologies being hydrocephalus and hydranencephaly. The underlying cause of hydranencephaly is unknown, but many have suggested that the characteristic supratentorial injury is related to idiopathic bilateral occlusions of the internal carotid arteries from an acquired or destructive event. Fowler syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that causes fetal akinesia and a proliferative vasculopathy that can result in an apparent hydranencephaly-hydrocephaly complex. On prenatal imaging, the presence of significant parenchymal…
