The response of Caenorhabditis elegans to hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen cyanide.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), an endogenously produced small molecule, protects animals from various stresses. Recent studies demonstrate that animals exposed to H2S are long lived, resistant to hypoxia, and resistant to ischemia-reperfusion injury. We performed a forward genetic screen to gain insights into the molecular mechanisms Caenorhabditis elegans uses to appropriately respond to H2S. At least two distinct pathways appear to be important for this response, including the H2S-oxidation pathway and the hydrogen cyanide (HCN)-assimilation pathway. The H2S-oxidation pathway requires two distinct

Hydrogen Aggregation Enhances CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol Over In2O3-Based Catalysts.

The hydrogen (H) spillover on the catalyst surface is crucial in the CO2 hydrogenation reaction, but its effects on product selectivity have been rarely investigated. Herein, we reveal the H-spillover mediated regulatory role of oxide supports, which changed the CO2 hydrogenation selectivity on In2O3-based catalysts. By replacing the supports from TiO2 to ZrO2, the primary product of CO2 hydrogenation experiences a significant shift from carbon monoxide (95.6%) to methanol (84.2%). In situ characterization and theoretical modeling evidence that the degree of H-spillover influences the distribu…

Phase reconstruction of In-Mo oxide boosts CO2 hydrogenation to methanol.

An In0.5Mo0.5 oxide catalyst alleviates the activity-selectivity trade-off in CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Reduction-driven reconstruction of In2(MoO4)3 generates intimate In-Mo oxide interfaces, while In-to-Mo electron transfer creates oxygen vacancies and promotes H2 activation, delivering the highest methanol space-time yield among the tested catalysts.

Halide Electrolyte Effects in the Electrochemical Hydrogenation of Ketones on Copper.

Electrochemical hydrogenation of biomass-derived ketones offers a sustainable route to value-added chemicals but is often limited by competition from the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we investigate how electrolyte composition, and specifically halide identity, governs the selective electrochemical hydrogenation of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol on copper electrodes under near-neutral aqueous conditions. Potassium halide electrolytes introduce specific halide-surface interactions that modulate hydrogen adsorption, delay HER onset, and influence organic reduction behavior. Among the…

Catalytic hydrogenation of alkyne with planar tetracoordinate carbon in CAl3MgH2 ¯ system.

The present work reports the catalytic function of the planar tetracoordinate carbon (ptC) molecule, CAl3MgH2¯, for the first time. The hydrogenation of alkyne and alkene using CAl3MgH2¯ as a catalyst has been computationally examined through density functional theory calculations. Various quantum chemical tools are employed to analyze the reaction pathways systematically. The study also highlights that the reaction is favourable in the gas phase as compared to the solvent phase, suggesting the practical feasibility of using the CAl3MgH2 - catalyst in the industry. Intrinsic reaction coordinat…

Selective Carbonyl Reduction in Unsaturated Esters and Aldehydes by Transfer Hydrogenation.

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (TH) is an alternative to the industrially relevant hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds, dismissing the use of pressurized reactors. Herein, we compare ruthenium and osmium pincer complexes as catalysts for the selective carbonyl reduction of the renewable methyl 10-undecenoate, myrtenal, and cinnamaldehyde. Their selective carbonyl reduction is challenging because they also have a C-C double bond susceptible to reduction or isomerization. The osmium complexes, used for the first time in TH, showed considerably better activity and selectivity than the ruthenium…

A Review on Catalytic Ethanol Synthesis via Hydrogenation of Carbon Dioxide.

The catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2) is a promising strategy for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions while generating sustainable fuels and valuable chemicals. Among potential products, ethanol stands out as a renewable energy carrier due to its compatibility with existing fuel infrastructure and ability to reduce CO2 emissions when integrated into energy systems. Despite the success in converting CO2 into C1-Chemicals with high yields, the selective conversion of C2+ products, including ethanol, remains a challenge due to the synthetic complexity. This review explores recent ad…

Manganese-Catalyzed Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation of Heteroatom-Containing Imines and Diarylimines.

The efficient synthesis of chiral amines has garnered ongoing interest due to their prevalence in pharmaceuticals and biologically active compounds. However, most existing strategies for their synthesis primarily rely on asymmetric (transfer) hydrogenation (AH/ATH) using noble metal catalysts. Additionally, the AH/ATH of heteroatom-containing imines and diarylimines has posed a longstanding challenge. In this study, we have developed a general method for the ATH of heteroatom-containing imines and diarylimines, catalyzed by a chiral aminobenzimidazole manganese(I) complex, yielding the corresp…

Novel Ni/Zn MOFs for Sorbitol Production via Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation.

Researchers continue to explore alternative catalysts that are more abundant and effective for hydrogenation reactions to produce sorbitol, such as those using nickel, ruthenium, or zirconium metal centers. This study examined the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of glucose to sorbitol using different alcohol hydrogen donors, specifically ethanol, isopropanol, 1,4-butanediol, and 1,4-cyclohexanediol, with the prepared Ni/Zn MOF catalysts. It also assessed how sacrificial alcohols affected the transformation and selectivity toward sorbitol. The results confirmed the successful catalytic activit…

Homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 - amino acid-based capture and utilization.

In this review, we provide an overview of research efforts to integrate carbon dioxide capture specifically using amino acid-based sorbents with its thermocatalytic hydrogenation promoted by homogeneous metal complexes. Carbon capture and utilization (CCU) is a promising strategy for the production of fuels, chemicals and materials using CO2 scrubbed from point sources and the atmosphere as a C1 feedstock while mitigating CO2 emissions. Compared to established (alkanol)amines, amino acids offer some advantages as CO2 capture agents due to their lower volatility, higher oxygen stability and low…

An Amino-trans-Dihydrido Cobalt(III) Catalyst for Asymmetric Hydrogenation Reactions.

The development and fundamental chemistry of an amino-trans-dihydrido Co(III) catalyst for asymmetric hydrogenation (AH) reactions are described in this work. With an enantiopure tetradentate (S,S)-amino-ene(amido)diphosphine ligand defining the equatorial plane, axial trans-dihydrido coordination donors are incorporated into a cobalt(III) center with an octahedral coordination geometry. This cobalt complex serves as a novel amino-trans-dihydrido cobalt(III) catalyst (C1) for AH of ketones and esters. The introduction of these dihydrido ligands to C1 occurs in the precatalyst activation proces…

Magnetron Sputtering of Pure δ-Ni5Ga3 Thin Films for CO2 Hydrogenation.

Previous studies have identified δ-Ni5Ga3 as a promising catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol at atmospheric pressure. Given its recent discovery, the current understanding of this catalyst is very limited. Additionally, the presence of multiple thermodynamically stable crystal phases in the Ni/Ga system complicates the experiments and their interpretation. Conventional synthesis methods often result in the production of unwanted phases, potentially leading to incorrect conclusions. To address this issue, this study focuses on the synthesis of pure δ-Ni5Ga3 using magnetron sputter…

CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol over Mesoporous SiO2-Coated Cu-Based Catalysts.

Although chemical promotion led to essential improvements in Cu-based catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, surpassing structural limitations such as active phase aggregation under reaction conditions remains challenging. In this report, we improved the textural properties of Cu/In2O3/CeO2 and Cu/In2O3/ZrO2 catalysts by coating the nanoparticles with a mesoporous SiO2 shell. This strategy limited particle size up to 3.5 nm, increasing metal dispersion and widening the metal-metal oxide interface region. Chemometric analysis revealed that these structures could maintain high activity and…

Stereocontrolled Hydrogenation of Conjugated Enones to Alcohols via Dual Iridium-Catalysis.

The concept of dual catalysis is an emerging area holding high potential in terms of preparative efficiency, yet faces severe challenges in compatibility of reaction conditions and interference of catalysts. The transition-metal catalyzed stereoselective hydrogenation of olefins and ketones typically proceeds under different reaction conditions and/or uses a different reductant. As a result, these two types of hydrogenations can normally not be performed in the same pot. Herein, the stereocontrolled hydrogenation of enones to saturated alcohols is described, enabled by orthogonal dual iridium …

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of indigo by NiMoS: energy saving and conversion improving.

An NiMo alloy bonded with sulfur (NiMoS) exhibits enhanced surface affinity toward water and organic molecules, thereby enhancing electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) reactions through synergistic effects. In industrial processes, indigo, an ancient dye employed in the denim industry, is typically chemically reduced using sodium dithionite. However, this process generates an excess of toxic sulfide, which heavily contaminates the environment. ECH is a sustainable alternative for indigo reduction due to its reduced reliance on chemicals and energy consumption. In this study, carbon-felt (CF)-su…

Asymmetric hydrogenation of 1,1-diarylethylenes and benzophenones through a relay strategy.

Homogenous transition-metal catalysts bearing a chiral ligand are widely used for asymmetric hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds such as olefins and ketones, providing efficient concise access to products with chiral carbon centers. However, distinguishing the re and si prochiral faces of a double bond bearing two substituents that are sterically and electronically similar is challenging for these catalysts. Herein, we report a relay strategy for constructing compounds with a chiral gem-diaryl carbon center by means of a combination of selective arene exchange between 1,1-diarylethylenes or…

Asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of boronic acid pinacol ester (Bpin)-containing acetophenones.

A series of Bpin-containing acetophenone derivatives were reduced by asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH), using Noyori-Ikariya catalysts, with formic acid/triethylamine, to alcohols in high ee when the Bpin is in the para- or meta-position. Substrates containing ortho-Bpin groups were reduced in lower ee, with formation of a cyclic boron-containing group. The products were converted to substituted derivatives using Pd-catalysed coupling reactions. The results represent the first examples of ATH of Bpin-containing ketones.

Heterocycle-containing Noyori-Ikariya catalysts for asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of ketones.

The synthesis of a range of N-(heterocyclesulfonyl)-functionalised Noyori-Ikariya catalysts is described. The complexes were prepared through a short sequence from C2-symmetric 1,2-diphenylethylene-1,2-diamine (DPEN) and were characterised by a range of methods including X-ray crystallography. The complexes were active catalysts for the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of a range of acetophenone derivatives, giving products of high ee in most cases, with notably good results for ortho-substituted acetophenones.
