Methylmercury Transport and Fate Shows Strong Seasonal and Spatial Variability along a High Arctic Freshwater Hydrologic Continuum.

The presence of toxic methylmercury (MeHg) in Arctic freshwater ecosystems and foodwebs is a potential health concern for northern Indigenous people. Addressing this issue requires a better understanding of MeHg production, fate during transport, and uptake into foodwebs. We used methylation assays and spatiotemporal surveys of MeHg concentrations, during the ice-covered and open water seasons, across a hydrologic continuum (composed of thaw seeps, lake/ponds, and a wetland) to identify Hg methylation hotspots and seasonal differences in MeHg cycling unique to Arctic ecosystems. Ponds and satu

Hydrological conditions regulate dissolved organic matter quality in an intermittent headwater stream. From drought to storm analysis.

Storms and droughts are an essential driver for the dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentration in headwater streams. However, the relationship between DOM quality and discharge (Q) has not been addressed in depth and the impact of other hydro-climatic or biogeochemical drivers has not been explored. In this study DOM quality variability was explored at seasonal and storm event scales during an intensive 2.5-year-long sampling in a Mediterranean stream characterized by a severe summer drought. DOM quality was described in terms of absorbance and fluorescence properties. Most of the DOM proper

Hydrological processes significantly increase mercury-related ecological risk in karst paddy ecosystem: Evidence from mercury isotope.

Mercury (Hg) transported by runoff poses potential ecological risks to aquatic ecosystem. However, its mechanism remains unclear. This study investigated a typical karst paddy ecosystem in southwestern China. By analyzing isotopic compositions of inorganic Hg (IHg) and methylmercury (MeHg) across different environmental matrices, we clarified the significant impact of hydrological processes on Hg migration and accumulation in paddy ecosystem. Rainfall-driven runoff transported Hg from hillslope soils into irrigation water, with hillslope soils-derived Hg accounting for 72.6% of the total Hg in

What controls migratory fish spawning habitat distribution and quality? A novel hydrological-topographic framework for identifying essential factors.

The distribution and quality of fish spawning habitats are jointly associated with basin topography and hydrological conditions, whose spatial and temporal variability creates heterogeneous environmental settings among river reaches and may influence both habitat occurrence and reproductive suitability. Using Coreius guichenoti in the Jinsha River Basin, China, as a case study, we proposed a novel Stratified Identification Framework (SIF) using 72 reach-year observations for habitat-distribution analyses and 23 surveyed reach-year observations for habitat-quality analyses during 2007-2018. Hydrological regime controls DOM and WEOM dynamics in contrasting mid-channel bars: Insights from the middle Yangtze River.

Riverine sandbars are critical ecological units within rivers, yet their biogeochemical responses to dam-regulated hydrological regimes remain poorly understood. This study investigated the divergent dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its sediment-bound counterpart, water-extractable organic matter (WEOM), in two geomorphologically contrasting mid-channel bars-Sanba Sandbar (SBS) and Wugui Sandbar (WGS)-in the middle Yangtze River across four hydrological periods. By integrating three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and partial least squares s

Wastewater inputs and hydrological variability shape catchment-scale transport of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran-like immunoreactivity.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) are persistent hazardous pollutants whose riverine transport is shaped by wastewater discharges and hydrological variability. This study quantified PCDD/F-like immunoreactivity, expressed as PCDD/F ELISA equivalents (PCDD/F ELISA-EQ), in untreated and treated wastewater from 17 municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs)-seven small, five medium-sized, and five large-and at eight sites along the Pilica River over two annual cycles. The assay-derived PCDD/F ELISA-EQ metric used in this study is a screening measure distinct from con

Coupling Hydrological Scenarios and Water Footprints for Multi-Objective Cropping-Structure Optimization in the Middle and Lower Shiyang River Basin.

Hydrological fluctuations affect cropping-structure optimization in arid inland river basins by altering agricultural water-supply boundaries and crop yields. This study focused on five counties and districts in the middle and lower reaches of the Shiyang River Basin. Based on the 1995-2024 runoff series, four hydrological scenarios-wet, normal, dry, and extremely dry-were constructed. Crop yield responses were incorporated into blue, green, and gray water footprint accounting, and NSGA-III coupled with entropy-weighted TOPSIS was applied for multi-objective optimization. The results showed th

Hydrologic performance assessment of low impact development facilities based on monitoring data and SWMM modeling in an urban catchment in Taiwan.

Traditional urban stormwater management systems are increasingly strained by expanding impervious ground cover and intense precipitation associated with climate change. Low-impact Development (LID) has emerged as a vital strategy to mitigate these impacts. This study assessed Taiwan's first large-scale integrated LID installation-the Taoyuan Water Recycling Center, which incorporates bioretention cells, permeable pavements, and green roofs. Simulations performed using the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) calibrated using field data collected in 2021-2024 demonstrated that these LID faciliti

Hydrological state dependency of ecosystem CO2 sink in floodplain wetlands: Insights from long-term eddy covariance observations.

Floodplain wetlands experience complex hydrological variations that make them hotspots of carbon cycling, yet the characteristics and mechanisms of carbon flux dynamics under varying hydrological states remain poorly understood. Using multi-year eddy covariance measurements in China's Poyang Lake wetland, this study quantified net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO2 across four distinct hydrological states: Deep Submerged (DS), Shallow Submerged (SS), Vegetated exposure (VE), and Bare exposure (BE). Results showed that intermediate hydrological states (SS and VE) maximize CO2 uptake (NEE:0.58 to -

Impacts of future climate and land use/land cover change on urban runoff using fine-scale hydrologic modeling.

Future changes in land use/land cover (LULC) and climate (CC) affect watershed hydrology. Despite past research on estimating such changes, studies on the impacts of both these nonstationary stressors on urban watersheds have been limited. Urban watersheds have several important details such as hydraulic infrastructure that call for fine-scale models to predict the impacts of LULC and CC on watershed hydrology. In this paper, a fine-scale hydrologic model-Personal Computer Storm Water Management Model (PCSWMM)-was applied to predict the individual and joint impacts of LULC changes and CC on su…

Identification of pollutant delivery processes during different storm events and hydrological years in a semi-arid mountainous reservoir basin.

A comprehensive understanding of pollutant delivery processes during storm events is essential for developing strategies to minimize adverse impacts on receiving water bodies. In this paper, hysteresis analysis and principal component analysis were coupled with identified nutrient dynamics to determine different pollutant export forms and transport pathways and analyze the impact of precipitation characteristics and hydrological conditions on pollutant transport processes through continuous sampling between different storm events (4 events) and hydrological years (2018-wet, 2019-dry) in a semi

Seasonal Water Level Fluctuations Mediate Hydrological Connectivity and Shape Zooplankton Metacommunity in Poyang Lake Floodplain Saucer Lakes.

Poyang Lake is a typical floodplain lake hydrologically linked to the middle-lower Yangtze River. Its peripheral saucer-shaped sub-lakes undergo seasonal hydrological alternation between isolation and connectivity driven by annual water level fluctuations. To date, the coupling between seasonal hydrological rhythms and zooplankton metacommunity assembly in these saucer floodplain lakes remains poorly understood. In this study, four representative saucer sub-lakes within the Poyang Lake National Nature Reserve (Banghu, Zhonghuchi, Shahu and Dahuchi) were selected as research objects. Seasonal q

Hydrological continuums across climate and permafrost gradients: Spatial patterns of organic carbon, greenhouse gases, and major and trace elements.

Organic and inorganic solute fluxes from soils to rivers follow a hydrological continuum linking terrestrial and aquatic compartments, yet this cascade remains poorly constrained in permafrost regions despite its importance for carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) cycling. We investigated six hydrological continuums-soil water, fen, lake, riparian zone, stream, and river-across a 1500 km north-south transect of the Western Siberian Lowland, spanning the full gradient from permafrost-free taiga to continuous permafrost tundra. During summer baseflow, surface and soil waters were analyzed for dissolv

Exploring the contrasting lake CO2 fluxes and influencing variables in four large shallow subtropical lakes with different hydrological connectivity.

Lake carbon dioxide (CO2) evasion is a crucial component of global carbon cycle, yet the influence of environmental factors on CO2 emissions within different hydrological connectivity remains uncertain. Based on multiple machine learning methods, we investigated seasonal and annual CO2 fluxes, and the discrepancy in contributions and threshold behaviors of key variables to CO2 flux variations, in two river-connected lakes (Hongze and Poyang) and two non-river-connected lakes (Chaohu and Taihu). Random Forest performed well in CO2 flux simulations, with R2 values ranging from 0.91 to 0.95. Our

Impact of Climate and Hydrological Variability on Drinking Water Production and Trihalomethane Levels: A Case Study in Barcelona, Spain (2010-2024).

Surface water-based utilities increasingly face challenges in drinking water production during prolonged droughts and heavy rainfall events. We assessed the impact of climate and hydrological variability on trihalomethane (THM) levels in two drinking water treatment plants in Barcelona: one river-based (Llobregat plant) and one reservoir-based (Ter plant). We examined data from 15 years (2010-2024) using generalized additive models (GAMs) to evaluate the change (β) in chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, bromoform, and total THMs (THM4), by extreme (≤percentile 10, ≥percenti

Flood analysis in mixed-urban areas reflecting interactions with the complete water cycle through coupled hydrologic-hydraulic modelling.

The potential devastating effects of urban flooding have given high importance to thorough understanding and management of water movement within catchments, and computer modelling tools have found widespread use for this purpose. The state-of-the-art in urban flood modelling is the use of a coupled 1D pipe and 2D overland flow model to simultaneously represent pipe and surface flows. This method has been found to be accurate for highly paved areas, but inappropriate when land hydrology is important. The objectives of this study are to introduce a new urban flood modelling procedure that is abl…

Application of mercury stable isotopes to examine sources and hydrologic factors impacting mercury bioaccumulation and cycling in invertebrates of a model saline lake.

Invertebrates, such as brine shrimp and brine flies, are key prey items for millions of resident and migratory birds that utilize saline lakes such as Great Salt Lake (GSL). Elevated methylmercury (MeHg) in invertebrate and waterfowl species of GSL has been assumed to be linked to elevated MeHg in GSL's anoxic Deep Brine Layer (DBL) where aqueous concentrations can exceed 30 ng/L. Here, we leverage mercury (Hg) concentration and stable isotope measurements on brine flies (Ephydra hians and Ephydra cinerea), brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana), and spider (western spotted orbweaver [Neoscona oax
