BACKGROUND: There are many factors that can cause elevated serum amylase levels, including pancreatic causes such as acute pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis. Additionally, non-pancreatic causes, such as acute abdomen and acute parotitis, can also lead to increased serum amylase. These factors generally explain the consistency between elevated serum amylase and clinical symptoms. However, there are some special cases where patients exhibit atypical clinical symptoms but have persistently elevated serum amylase levels. Among these, macroamylasemia is an important differential diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic papillary balloon dilatation (EPBD) has been reported to increase the risk of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopanc … ylase levels the following morning were 214.5 +/- 152.9 U/L, and no cases developed pancreatitis or hyperamylasemia (>3 times normal). These outcomes were favorable compared with previous EPBD reports. Furthermore, despite the stress of EPBD/ENBD after ERCP, these outcomes were better, even compared with simple ERCP performed at our institution [amylase levels: 3 …

BACKGROUND: Macroamylasemia is a rare condition affecting 0.5-1.5% of the population. Macroamylasemia should be suspected in a patient with a high serum alpha-amylase level without an elevation in the urine alpha-amylase level. Serum amylase binds with other serum proteins like immunoglobulins A (92%), immunoglobulins G (< 30%), and others (< 5%), forming macromolecular complexes that weigh more than 400 KDa. Nephrones are unable to secrete these macromolecules into the urine due to their large size, which causes the accumulation of these macromolecules in the serum. Patients with COVID-19 dur

CONTEXT: Article analyzes current data on macroamylasemia and splenosis, their etiology and diagnostics in particular.
CASE REPORT: Authors presented their own clinical observation of a young woman who was diagnosed to have macroamylasemia on the background of splenosis due to the splenectomy after blunt abdominal injury.
CONCLUSION: This is the first time such a combination of macroamylasemia on the background of splenosis has been described in the literature.

To determine the clinical utility of routine determination of serum isoamylase (pancreatic/salivary) and/or lipase activity, sera were teste … terminations add little information in cases of clinically suspected acute pancreatitis with marked hyperamylasemia. The tests may have a role in the evaluation of patients with clinically unexplained hyperamylasemia by defining more precisely the origin of the amylase.

Isoenzymes of amylase were studied in serum from 72 persons by means of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and a direct saccharogenic assay … prominent slower-moving peak of amylase activity occurred in the serum of 8 of 12 patients who had hyperamylasemia associated with various liver diseases. Traces of this third peak were identifiable in one-third of normal serum specimens, but no increases in its activity were observed in any specimen from 11 patients with pancreatitis or from 12 other patients w …

A patient is reported who developed severe haemorrhagic pancreatitis, without hyperamylasemia, which was complicated by gross hypocalcaemia presenting as tetany. Tetany is very uncommon in acute pancreatitis and is a grave prognostic indicator, recovery being exceptionally rare. The mechanisms responsible for disordered calcium homeostasis associated with acute pancreatitis are reviewed. CT scanning was an important feature of this patient's management and its role in severe pancreatitis is discussed.

OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to compare clinical outcomes and postoperative complications of two endoscopic treatments (endoscopic iso … PBD groups (n = 138). Postoperative morbidities, including pancreatitis, cholangitis, bleeding, and hyperamylasemia, were assessed at 3 and 24 hours. Stone clearance was also evaluated.
RESULTS: The incidence of pancreatitis was 9.55% in the EIPSBD group and 7.97% in the EST + EPBD group (P = .5). Hyperamylasemia occurred in 41.57% of the patients in the EIPSBD …

BACKGROUND: Post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) pancreatitis (PEP) remains a major concern for clinicians. Hence earl … Leu - Pr Leu and Po Leu/Pr Leu were 71.0%, 82.7%, 66.1% and 86.3% to diagnosis PEP in patients with hyperamylasemia.
CONCLUSIONS: For early identification of PEP, the elevation of amylase and lipase still exhibits the highest sensitivity, while the dynamic changes of leukocyte would be helpful for the different diagnosis of hyperamylasemia.

Although elevated amylase levels in serum, pleural fluid, and extracts of tumor tissue in primary lung cancer have been reported, electropho … hether amylase might be produced ectopically in tumor tissues. Our data not only confirmed that the hyperamylasemia in some cases of primary lung cancer was due to an increase in salivary type isoamylases, but also showed that the same isoamylase pattern occurs in serum, pleural fluids, and diseased lung tissue of patients with pneumonia. However, the elution pat …

A previously healthy patient with chronic hyperamylasemia and epigastric pain following blunt abdominal trauma complicated by retroperitoneal hematoma is reported. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatographic and computerized tomographic examinations revealed pancreatographic characteristics of pancreas divisum with traumatic disruption of the duct of Santorini and adjacent pseudocyst formation. Distal pancreatectomy with cystjejunostomy resulted in total recovery. This represents the first documented case of traumatic pancreatitis in a patient with pancreas divisum.

Macroamylasaemia (MA) is a biochemical disorder characterised by elevated serum amylase activity, resulting from the circulation of a macromolecular complex of amylase bound to a serum component, often an immunoglobulin. The increased molecular weight of this complex prevents the normal renal excretion of the enzyme. A few cases of adult patients with coeliac disease (CD) and MA have been reported, in which the biochemical disorder resolved after treatment with a gluten-free diet. However, in other cases, this resolution did not occur. Here, we report a case of CD masquerading as recurrent pan

Zeitschrift fur Kinderchirurgie : organ der Deutschen, der Schweizerischen und der Osterreichischen Gesellschaft fur Kinderchirurgie = Surgery in infancy and childhood1990ger
The common channel syndrome is a disease mostly of young girls. To demonstrate the problems of diagnosis and therapy we report on 2 cases operated on in 1987 and 1989. The long delay of several years between the onset of symptoms and the diagnosis might be shortened by improved diagnostic possibilities (Ultrasound, ERCP). In any case of hyperamylasemia or chronic pancreatitis in childhood an obstruction of the biliary tract should be excluded. The common channel syndrome can be treated by means of sphincteroplasty or a bilidigestive anastomosis.
