The evaluation of vancomycin hypersensitivity reactions is challenging, as skin testing is not validated. Intradermal testing with vancomycin in human serum albumin-based sterile saline could be a new approach to the evaluation of IgE-independent hypersensitivity reactions.

BACKGROUND: Iodinated contrast media (ICM) is a frequently used compound in radiology. Non-immediate hypersensitivity reactions (HSR) appear when a patient leaves the department and usually are undocumented. True hypersensitivity in this group is rarely proved.
METHODS: Single-centre 2014-2018 data were retrospectively analysed. HSR to ICM were classified and investigated according to the time of occurrence (immediate <1 hour, non-immediate >1 hour). ENDA questionnaire and skin tests (prick or intradermal test) were performed according to ENDA/EAACI recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Human serum albumin (HSA) is a commonly used colloid for volume expansion and albumin replacement and during plasmapheresis. Colloids are an uncommon cause of anaphylaxis, and cases of hypersensitivity reactions to HSA are extremely rare.

The immediate hypersensitivity (anaphylaxis) response in uninfected and Alcaligenes faecalis-infected turkey poults was studied. The optimum challenge dose of bovine serum albumin (BSA) to elicit an anaphylactic response was 40 mg/kg body weight, and the optimum poult age was 4 to 5 weeks. The response latency time was 7 days. The anaphylactic response was specific for the sensitizing antigen used. No differences were observed between A. faecalis-infected and uninfected poults in the immediate hypersensitivity response to BSA.
