Malignant hyperthermia.

The authors report the case of an infant with noncommunicating hydrocephalus, Arnold-Chiari malformation, and a lumbar myelomeningocele, in whom malignant hyperthermia occurred. The genetics and presumed etiology of this unusual problem are reviewed. The management is directed toward establishing effective cooling measures, reversing tissue hypoxia, and correcting respiratory and metabolic acidosis.

Malignant hyperthermia.

Malignant hyperthermia of anesthesia is a severe complication and must be treated vigorously. The anesthetic should be stopped and the core body temperature reduced. Systemic complications must be anticipated, hopefully prevented, and appropriately treated. Appropriate laboratory studies must be obtained. A comprehensive family survey may alert the physician to a tendency toward this problem. Temperature monitoring during surgery may give an early warning of malignant hyperthermia developing. I would suggest that routine temperature monitoring during surgery be considered by the anesthesia dep…

Perioperative temperature elevation: not all hyperthermia is malignant hyperthermia.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review is to assist the readers, anesthesiologists, intensivists, and emergency physicians in making a more accurate diagnosis of perioperative fever or hyperthermia and subsequently choose the proper course of treatment. AIM: To identify the many sources of perioperative fever and after a more accurate differential diagnosis, select appropriate treatment options. Most anesthesiologists, intensivists, and emergency physicians are not familiar with an expansive differential of perioperative fever. This article attempts to expose these physicians to that differ…

Hyperthermia in the pediatric intensive care unit--is it malignant hyperthermia?

OBJECTIVE: To determine the characteristics of calls made to the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States (MHAUS) Hotline regarding pediatric patients in the intensive care unit setting. AIM: Retrospective, cohort study conducting analysis of included cases to identify the cause of elevated temperature in the pediatric intensive care unit. BACKGROUND: The etiology of hyperthermia in the pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) is multifactorial and often difficult to diagnose. METHODS/MATERIALS: Review of all MHAUS logs for the years 1997-2005 for children, 18 years of age and you…

[Principles, technology and indication of hyperthermia and part body hyperthermia].

Clinical hyperthermia with controlled alteration of temperature (40 to 44 degrees C) in the target area is used in interdisciplinary treatment concepts for tumor treatment in combination with radiation and/or radiotherapy. Besides the direct cytotoxic power of hyperthermia there is an immunomodulatory effect and a radiation and chemotherapy sensitizing effect in the heated tissue. Clinical hyperthermia is an invasive or non-invasive supply of energy to the body of the patient, which leads to an artificial heating of the tumor and the surrounded tissue. The clinical hyperthermic procedures shou…

p-Chloroamphetamine-induced hyperthermia pharmacologically distinct from fenfluramine-induced hyperthermia.

The influence of various drug pretreatments upon the responses of rabbits to the putative indirect 5-hydroxytryptaminergic agonists p-chloroamphetamine (PCA) and fenfluramine were examined. In naive rabbits PCA evoked hyperthermia, behavioural excitation and prominent forepaw clonic activity, while fenfluramine produced only hyperthermia and behavioural stimulation. The hyperthermic and behavioural responses of both agents were reduced by the 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) uptake inhibitor, fluoxetine, potentiated by the monoamine oxidase inhibitor, pheniprazine, and unaltered by the dopaminergic …

Trauma and Hyperthermia.

AUDIENCE: Emergency medicine residents and medical students on emergency medicine rotation. INTRODUCTION: Participating in strenuous activi … during heat stroke interferes with the ability to obtain an adequate history as to the etiology of hyperthermia and altered mental status. It is imperative that the patient receive cooling measures immediately and that supportive measures be instituted while evaluating the patient for other etiologies including trauma-related injuries.1, 2, 3. [Fever and hyperthermia].

The knowledge of the physiological mechanisms for controlling body temperature, and the etiology and pathophysiology of fever and hyperthermia nursing care enable these interdisciplinary problems, allowing early detection to prevent its progression. It also allows the nurse the implementation of quality care through the adoption of specific measures to lower the temperature, the administration of medical therapy, hemodynamic monitoring, respiratory and metabolic control and water.
