The Role of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Non-colorectal Peritoneal Surface Malignancies.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal carcinomatosis, from a variety of gastrointestinal and gynecological malignancies, has been historically challenging to treat and there remains a wide range of biologic aggressiveness in these patients. Malignancies commonly associated with PC include those of colorectal, appendiceal, gastric, ovarian, sarcoma, small intestinal, and primary peritoneal origin among others. Advances in our understanding of this unique disease process have led to significant interest in cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) as an emerging treatment

Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for the treatment of recurrent ovarian cancer in elderly women.

Our aim was to evaluate the morbidity and survival associated with combined cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in the treatment of recurrent ovarian cancer for patients aged 70 years and older. We conducted a monocentric study in a French university hospital and collected data on 15 women aged ≥ 70 years, treated by cytoreduction and HIPEC for ovarian cancer relapse. The median overall survival was 35 months, with a median disease-free survival of 15.6 months. When a Peritoneal Cancer Index subgroup analysis was performed, a statistically significant di

Cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for gallbladder cancer: a retrospective review.

Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) often prolongs survival in patients with peritoneal surface disease, yet is generally avoided in patients with peritoneal spread from gallbladder cancer as a result of its aggressive biologic behavior. Therefore, we reviewed our experience with CRS/HIPEC for patients with gallbladder cancer. We retrospectively evaluated the outcomes of CRS/HIPEC procedures performed from 1991 to 2013 using a prospectively maintained database of 1069 procedures. Patient and tumor characteristics, morbidity, mortality, and surviva

Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for peritoneal carcinomatosis: the Danish experience.

AIM: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a treatment option with curative intent for selected patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC). CRS and HIPEC have been implemented in Denmark at a single centre since 2006. Six years of data on these patients were analysed. METHOD: Patients with PC from colorectal or appendiceal cancer, pseudomyxoma peritonei or malignant peritoneal mesothelioma referred to the single national HIPEC centre were prospectively registered from June 2006 to July 2012. Morbidity, 30-day mortality and long-term s

Efficacy of cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in the management of malignant ascites.

BACKGROUND: In peritoneal surface disease, accumulation of malignant ascites represents a difficult problem to treat, with adverse impact on quality of life. The role of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in controlling malignant ascites is not well defined. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database of 1,000 procedures was performed. Type of malignancy, resolution of ascites, duration and agent of chemoperfusion, performance status, resection status, morbidity, mortality, and survival were reviewed. RESULTS: Ascit

Predicting Postoperative Infection After Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy with Splenectomy.

BACKGROUND: Hematologic changes after splenectomy and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) can complicate postoperative assessment of infection. This study aimed to develop a machine-learning model to predict postoperative infection after cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and HIPEC with splenectomy. METHODS: The study enrolled patients in the national TriNetX database and at the Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) who underwent splenectomy during CRS/HIPEC from 2010 to 2024. Demographics, comorbidities, vital signs, daily laboratory values, and documented infections were collected. The patien

Effectiveness of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy during primary curative resection for colorectal carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Peritoneal metastasis (PM) is the life-threatening cause of colorectal cancer patients (CRC). Adjuvant hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) plus cytoreductive surgery exhibited promising effects in preventing recurrence and increasing the survival of CRC patients. However, the outcomes of HIPEC on treating advanced CRC with risk of PM are still controversial. Here, we retrospectively examined the impact of HIPEC on preventing PM and its overall effects on patients with locally advanced CRC who underwent primary curative resection at our center. METHODS: We retrospectivel

Increased risk for incisional hernia following cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of incisional hernias (IH) after midline laparotomy varies from 11% to 20%. Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) is potentially prone to hernias because a Xiphoid to pubis laparotomy incision performed on patients who have undergone previous abdominal surgeries with the addition of chemotherapy and its related adverse effects. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis on a prospectively maintained single institution database from March 2015 to July 2020. The inclusion criteria were patients who underwent CRS-HIPEC and

Appendiceal goblet cell carcinomatosis treated with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIPEC) is a treatment commonly applied to peritoneal surface disease from low-grade mucinous tumors of the appendix. Some centers have extended this therapy to carcinomatosis from more aggressive malignancies. Therefore, we reviewed our experience with CRS/HIPEC for patients with goblet cell carcinomatosis. METHODS: Patients with carcinomatosis from appendiceal primaries with goblet cell features were identified in a prospectively maintained database of 1198 CRS/HIPEC procedures performed between 1991 and 20

A Review of the Use of Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Peritoneal Malignancy in Pediatric Patients.

Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) can directly target microscopic peritoneal disease, has achieved regular consideration in the treatment of several adult cancer types, and is more recently being studied in pediatrics. This review paper provides an overview of the use of this modality in pediatrics in order to identify medication choice, discuss post-operative morbidity and mortality, and evaluate impact on overall survival. Four databases were searched including Scopus, PubMed, Embase, and CINAHL and ultimately 37 papers documenting the use of this modality comprising 264 pedi
