Exercise and hyperuricemia: an opinion article.

Hyperuricaemia (HUA) is an abnormally high concentration of serum urate caused by either an excess of uric acid production or decreased excretion capacity in the body. Serum urate concentration forms sodium salts that deposit in the soft tissues of the joints, ultimately leading to gout. Additionally, HUA is strongly associated with several acute and chronic illnesses. In various clinical guidelines and practices, xanthine oxidase inhibitors, such as allopurinol and febuxostat, are commonly used as the initial medication for treating HUA. However, extended usage of urate-lowering drugs may hav

The Role of the Intestine in the Development of Hyperuricemia.

Gout is a common inflammatory arthritis caused by the deposition of sodium urate crystals in the joints. Hyperuricemia is the fundamental factor of gout. The onset of hyperuricemia is related to purine metabolism disorders or uric acid excretion disorders. Current studies have shown that the intestine is an important potential organ for the excretion of uric acid outside the kidneys. The excretion of uric acid of gut is mainly achieved through the action of uric acid transporters and the catabolism of intestinal flora, which plays an important role in the body's uric acid balance. Here we revi…

Susceptibility genes of hyperuricemia and gout.

Gout is a chronic metabolic disease that seriously affects human health. It is also a major challenge facing the world, which has brought a heavy burden to patients and society. Hyperuricemia (HUA) is the most important risk factor for gout. In recent years, with the improvement of living standards and the change of dietary habits, the incidence of gout in the world has increased dramatically, and gradually tends to be younger. An increasing number of studies have shown that gene mutations may play an important role in the development of HUA and gout. Therefore, we reviewed the existing litera…

Role of diet in hyperuricemia and gout.

BACKGROUND: Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, affecting 41 million adults worldwide. The global burden of gout has been increasing over the last three decades, yet its management remains suboptimal. The primary aim of this manuscript is to review the impact of various diets such as the DASH, Mediterranean, and low purine diets; weight loss; and individual foods, including alcohol, caffeine, cherry, dairy, high-fructose corn syrup, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin C on hyperuricemia and clinical gout outcomes such as flares and tophi. CONCLUSION: Few studies to date have …

Genomic Influences on Hyperuricemia and Gout.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified nearly 30 loci associated with urate concentrations that also influence the subsequent risk of gout. The ABCG2 Q141 K variant is highly likely to be causal and results in internalization of ABCG2, which can be rescued by drugs. Three other GWAS loci contain uric acid transporter genes, which are also highly likely to be causal. However identification of causal genes at other urate loci is challenging. Finally, relatively little is known about the genetic control of progression from hyperuricemia to gout. Only 4 small GWAS have been publish…

Hyperuricemia: a possible cause of hemospermia.

OBJECTIVE: To report our experience with hemospermia and its relation to hyperuricemia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between July 2005 and July 2012, 143 patients with hemospermia presented to the outpatient clinic in our hospital. History, examination, workup, treatment outcomes, and long-term follow-up were reported in a prospective database. Patients were followed up monthly by semen examination till disappearance of hemospermia, then every 3 months for 1 year. We identified 43 patients, who had 4-12 hemospermia attacks for 2-10 months before presentation with no identifiable cause for hemospermi…

[Hyperuricemia and gout; the role of diet].

From ancient times, gout has been related with excessive eating and drinking; however, it has not been until the last decade that a broader knowledge on dietary factors associated with hyperuricemia and gout has been achieved. Obesity, excessive intake of red meats and alcoholic beverages were already recognized as causal factors from Antiquity. Legumes and purine rich vegetables have been exculpated after the studies. New risk factors, not previously recognized, have been described such as fructose and sweetened beverages. Finally, protective factors have also been described, such as skimmed …

Hyperuricemia, gout and the metabolic syndrome.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The metabolic syndrome is defined by the clustering of a number of cardiovascular risk factors and entails an increased risk for cardiovascular disease and mortality from both cardiovascular disease and all causes. In the present paper, we review the most recent evidence on the association between hyperuricemia, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. RECENT FINDINGS: Serum urate is frequently elevated in patients with the metabolic syndrome and increases with the number of components of this condition. Hyperuricemia has been related to decreased renal uric acid exc…

[Epidemiology of hyperuricemia and gout in Japan].

It has been reported that the prevalence of hyperuricemia in Japan is 20-25% in adult male population and has been increasing at least until a few years ago. Although epidemiological data for the prevalence of gout in Japan is limited, a recent study conducted in a local area of Wakayama prefecture reported a prevalence of 1.1% in men. Japanese national census data revealed that the number of individuals visiting hospitals with a self-diagnosis of gout has been increasing. The census data also showed that the proportion of individuals with obesity(BMI > or = 25) has been increasing in male pop…

Update on the management of hyperuricemia and gout.

Gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis in the United States, with more than three million sufferers. Management of gout has changed relatively little in the past 50 years, despite the fact that many gout patients have contraindications to one or more currently available gout therapies. However, recent insights into gout pathophysiology suggest that time is ripe for a change. This article reviews recent updates in the management of gout, including new insights into dietary management that may permit better control of hyuperuricemia. Also reviewed are the biological and clinical data beh

[Is hyperuricemia a cardiovascular risk factor?].

The association of elevated serum uric acid (hyperuricemia, gout) with the presence of classical coronary risk factors and coronary artery disease (CAD) or myocardial infarction (MI) has been analysed in many epidemiological studies. Numerous studies have revealed that hypertension, high body mass index (BMI), lipid disorders (especially raised triglycerides--TG level and low high dense lipoprotein cholesterol HDL-C level), increased creatinine or insulin levels have caused hyperuricemia. No association has been observed between hyperuricemia and diabetes type 2 and uricemia and glicemia. But …

[Hyperuricemia and gout: diagnosis and therapy].

In our modern society hyperuricemia is one of the most frequent metabolism disturbances. So far, every fourth man and every tenth woman suffer from an asymptomatic or a symptomatic hyperuricemia named gout. Mostly, over nutrition and malnutrition as well as other secondary factors with a genetically determined renal secretion disturbance of uric acid lead to an increase of serum uric acid. By deposition of uric acid crystals in tissues with intermittent immunologic activation of inflammation cells a manifestation of gout can be seen. The clinical image of gout varies widely. It may manifest as…

Metabolomics Reveal the Anti-Hyperuricemia Effects and Mechanisms of Sunflower Head Extract in Hyperuricemia Mice Model.

Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a globally prevalent metabolic disease characterized by excessive production or insufficient excretion of uric acid in the serum. Although several drugs are available for the treatment of HUA, they have been associated with undesirable side effects. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the therapeutic effects of sunflower head extract (KHE) on HUA in a mouse model and explore its potential mechanisms. All mice were randomly divided into three groups: Normal control (NC, 0.5% CMC-Na), HUA model (MD, yeast extract paste 20 g/kg), and KHE treatment group (KHE, 1 g/kg). Bi…
