Unraveling depression: Principles and practices of clinical hypnosis.

People struggling with depression are burdened by losses they can't and won't accept. They find themselves at odds not only with their circumstances, but also with symptomatic expressions of their exhausting efforts to shelter from, gird against, and contend with their pain and desolation. Their embattled sense of self gets no respite: Everything, including the depression itself, feels threatening, a violation, other. This article investigates why, and demonstrates how, hypnosis is particularly well suited for treating such self-referential, adversarial entanglements. Fundamentally association…

Hypnosis As A Therapy for Chronic Lower Back Pain.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic lower back pain is a crippling condition for the individual and a significant burden on society. It is notoriously challenging to manage despite access to invasive interventions. Understanding hypnosis as a powerful therapeutic adjunct to this condition allows holistic treatment of patients in distress. RECENT FINDINGS: In addition to classic etiologies of chronic lower back pain, hypnosis has proven to be beneficial in chronic back pain caused by pregnancy, diabetic and HIV neuropathy. Combination of hypnosis with other mind-body techniques such as olfactory stimul…

Brain Activity and Functional Connectivity Associated with Hypnosis.

Hypnosis has proven clinical utility, yet changes in brain activity underlying the hypnotic state have not yet been fully identified. Previous research suggests that hypnosis is associated with decreased default mode network (DMN) activity and that high hypnotizability is associated with greater functional connectivity between the executive control network (ECN) and the salience network (SN). We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate activity and functional connectivity among these three networks in hypnosis. We selected 57 of 545 healthy subjects with very high or low hypno…

The Effectiveness of Hypnosis Intervention for Labor: An Experimental Study.

Hypnosis has been shown to help pregnant women experience improved labor and postpartum periods. The present study compares the differences between experimental (n = 23) and control groups (n = 22) on specific variables measured both during labor and 24 hr postpartum. The participants in the experimental group received the hypnosis intervention at weeks 16, 20, 28, and 36 of pregnancy, while those in the control group received only routine antenatal care. The data collected at the labor stage describe the length of the labor stage, pain relief used during labor, the method of delivery, and the…

A Case Study of Hypnosis for Phagophobia: It's No Choking Matter.

In this case study the author reviews the benefits of hypnosis for a 13-year-old female suffering from a specific phobia involving a fear of choking and generalized fear of swallowing that resulted in an episode of Restrictive Food Intake Disorder with associated significant weight loss. At the time of the initial consultation, three weeks after her choking episode, the patient weighed 93 pounds. Standing at 5'2", her Body Mass Index (BMI) was 17 (15th percentile) indicative of healthy weight for a child her age and height. She continued to lose weight over the course of 2 months and at her wo…

Hypnosis for Acute Procedural Pain: A Critical Review.

Clinical evidence for the effectiveness of hypnosis in the treatment of acute procedural pain was critically evaluated based on reports from randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs). Results from the 29 RCTs meeting inclusion criteria suggest that hypnosis decreases pain compared to standard care and attention control groups and that it is at least as effective as comparable adjunct psychological or behavioral therapies. In addition, applying hypnosis in multiple sessions prior to the day of the procedure produced the highest percentage of significant results. Hypnosis was most effective i…

Hypnosis in pediatrics: applications at a pediatric pulmonary center.

BACKGROUND: This report describes the utility of hypnosis for patients who presented to a Pediatric Pulmonary Center over a 30 month period. METHODS: Hypnotherapy was offered to 303 patients from May 1, 1998 - October 31, 2000. Patients offered hypnotherapy included those thought to have pulmonary symptoms due to psychological issues, discomfort due to medications, or fear of procedures. Improvement in symptoms following hypnosis was observed by the pulmonologist for most patients with habit cough and conversion reaction. Improvement of other conditions for which hypnosis was used was gauged …

Treatment of hysterical aphonia with hypnosis and prokaletic therapy.

A patient with chronic refractory hysterical aphonia was treated by prokalesis (challenge) and hypnosis within a psychotherapeutic relationship. A temporary remission was achieved but this was followed by subsequent relapse. This report illustrates the therapeutic effectiveness of prokaletic techniques. It also emphasises that these potent interventions are unlikely to achieve abiding change unless they are applied within the context of a longer-term relationship with a clinical team.

Hypnosis: emotions for the tin man (the schizoid personality).

Insight psychotherapy had been ineffective in helping a schizoid patient experience affect. He remained cold, aloof, and without overt expression of affect. When hypnosis was utilized, the patient overtly demonstrated affect. Hence the title for the article--hypnosis was effective in changing the tin man into a person with emotions and feelings. A discussion indicates some possible variables associated with this phenomenon.

Childhood abuse, dissociation and hypnosis: Trauma-related transference.

This article presents how to apply psychodynamic theory of transference in the treatment of traumatized patients who have endured repeated early life trauma and a lack of relational safety. To make hypnosis safe, the author adapts her interventions to each patient's unique needs. Clinically relevant and experientially informed perspectives are provided, designed to support therapists in maintaining a safe hypnotic approach when patients relate to the therapist with negative transference, such as anger, hate, fear and distrust. In contrast to the popular focus on techniques, goals and treatment…

Mapping EEG-based hypnosis research: A bibliometric study.

Hypnosis, traditionally studied as a psychological phenomenon, is increasingly explored through electroencephalography (EEG) to monitor alterations in brain activity associated with the hypnotic state. This study provides a bibliometric analysis of EEG-based hypnosis research, mapping key trends, contributors, and emerging themes. A Scopus-based bibliometric analysis was conducted on January 24, 2025, retrieving 135 publications using relevant keywords. The study examined publication trends, leading authors, institutions, contributing countries, journal sources, and keyword co-occurrence netwo…

Thyroid surgery under hypnosis: A 50-case series.

OBJECTIVES: The study objective was to compare patient satisfaction after thyroid lobo-isthmectomy under hypnoanesthesia versus general anes … l anesthesia. For comparable analgesia, postoperative pain was lower, but not significantly, in the Hypnosis group, while the rate of nausea and vomiting was significantly lower (p<0.05). Postoperative convalescence was shorter in the Hypnosis group: 3.7 versus 9.2 days (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: In thyroid surgery, hypnoanesthesia has real advantages over ge …

Tandem hypnosis with identical bulimic twins: case report.

Hypnosis has been used in the treatment of bulimia nervosa from the early 1980s. Dissociation theory identified a certain subgroup of eating disordered patients with dissociative signs and symptoms. These patients react well to hypnotherapy. Simultaneous hypnosis ("tandem hypnosis") in the treatment of two female 19-year-old monozygotic twins led to a very successful outcome after 6 sessions. During the therapy, attempts were made to work through the physical abuse the subjects suffered from their father. Hypnobehavioural methods were used and treatment was combined with five individual sessio…

Hypnosis for complex trauma survivors: four case studies.

This report described a phased-oriented treatment of complex trauma in four Chinese women. Two women were survivors of childhood sexual abuse, one was a rape victim, and the other was a battered spouse. A phased-oriented treatment that tailored to the needs of the clients was used. The treatment framework consisted of three phases: stabilization, trauma processing, and integration. Hypnotic techniques had been used in these phases as means for grounding and stabilization, for accessing the traumatic memories, and for consolidating the gains. Data from self-reports, observation and objective me

Exogenous adenosine potentiates hypnosis induced by intravenous anaesthetics.

We investigated the effect of adenosine on hypnosis induced by thiopentone, propofol and midazolam in mice. The onset and duration of hypnosis were determined by the loss of righting reflex. Adenosine and 2-chloroadenosine caused a significant shortening of onset of sleep-time and prolongation of duration of sleep-time in all groups (p < 0.05). Dipyridamole administration before combined intravenous anaesthetic-adenosine or intravenous anaesthetic-2-chloroadenosine administration produced similar effects to adenosine (p < 0.05). The adenosine antagonist theophylline, given before intravenous a…

Suggested deafness during hypnosis and simulation of hypnosis compared to a distraction and control condition: A study on subjective experience and cortical brain responses.

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to affect the processing and perception of stimuli. Here, we investigated the effects of hypnosis on the processing of auditory stimuli, the time course of event-related-potentials (ERP; N1 and P3b amplitudes) and the activity of cortical sources of the P3b component. Forty-eight participants completed an auditory oddball paradigm composed of standard, distractor, and target stimuli during a hypnosis (HYP), a simulation of hypnosis (SIM), a distraction (DIS), and a control (CON) condition. During HYP, participants were suggested that an earplug would obstruct the pe…
