Bathing-suit ichthyosis. A peculiar phenotype of lamellar ichthyosis in South African blacks.

Autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis is a heterogeneous group of disorders of cornification showing a wide spectrum of clinical phenotypes. Here, thirteen cases of a so far unreported distinct type of autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis are described. All the skin lesions were present at birth and ten were then compatible with collodion baby. Shedding of the collodion led to an ichthyotic condition with a very characteristic distribution of the lesions which involved the trunk, the most proximal parts of the upper limbs, scalp and neck but spared the central face and extremities. The

Accuracy of the clinical diagnosis of recessive X-linked ichthyosis vs ichthyosis vulgaris.

The present study analyzes the accuracy of the clinical diagnosis of X-linked ichthyosis (XLI) vs ichthyosis vulgaris (IV), in a sample of Mexican patients. The study was double blind, using steroid sulfatase (STS) activity as the golden standard. Twenty male patients were included; 16 corresponded to XLI and 4 to IV. The clinical diagnosis was correct in 9 of the 16 XLI cases (56%) and in 2 of the 4 IV cases (50%). Some clinical findings in XLI, such as cryptorchidism in patients and delayed labor in their mothers, were important features for diagnosis. Statistical analysis of the results sho

Autosomal-dominant lamellar ichthyosis: ultrastructural characteristics of a new type of congenital ichthyosis.

Recently, autosomal-dominant lamellar ichthyosis (ADLI) has been shown to be a new genetic trait with clinical and histologic features similar to those of autosomal-recessive lamellar ichthyosis. In two patients affected with ADLI, the malpighian keratinocytes showed ultrastructural signs of increased cellular metabolism. The tonofilaments and keratohyaline granules were regular in structure and number. However, as a distinctive ultrastructural feature, a prominent transforming zone was found between the granular and horny layers. Moreover, a normal keratin pattern and only a limited number of

Ichthyosis associated with ARC syndrome: ARC syndrome is one of the differential diagnoses of ichthyosis.

The arthrogryposis, renal tubular dysfunction and cholestasis syndrome is rare. Novel identification of the mutation in VPS33B in this syndrome, which involves intracellular protein trafficking by regulation of vesicle-to-target sensory nerve action potential receptor (SNARE) family, might explain the consistent combination of membrane fusion defects. We can guess the defective lamellar body secretion mediated by the soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor attachment protein receptor or SNARE protein pathway in the epidermis might result in the ichthyosiform phenotype. Treating epidermolytic ichthyosis and ichthyosis with confetti with epidermal autografts cultured from revertant skin.

BACKGROUND: No efficient treatment has yet been established for epidermolytic ichthyosis (EI), which is caused by pathogenic variants of KRT1 or KRT10. Patients with ichthyosis with confetti (IWC) have multiple normal-appearing spots, caused by the revertant somatic recombination of pathogenic variants that occurs at each spot independently. Additionally, some patients with EI have large areas of normal skin due to revertant postzygotic mosaicism. OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility of transplanting cultured epidermal autografts (CEAs) produced from revertant epidermal keratinocytes in pati

Developmental cataract in congenital ichthyosis.

A teenage boy who was previously diagnosed to have congenital ichthyosis presented to the eye clinic with complaints of gradually decreasing vision in both eyes since childhood. The best-corrected distance visual acuity was 20/125 in the right eye and 20/40 in the left eye. Clinical examination revealed developmental cataracts in both eyes. He underwent cataract surgery in the right eye and visual acuity improved to 20/25. Hence, we conclude that congenital ichthyosis can be associated with developmental cataracts. Cataract surgery helps in restoring vision in those with visually significant c

Harlequin Ichthyosis - A Case Report.

Harlequin Ichthyosis is a very rare genetic disorder affecting mainly the skin with severe morbidity and mortality. It affects both sexes with incidence of about 1 in 300,000 live births. Autosomal recessive inheritance has been inferred with mutation in ABCA 12 gene identified. Hence, genetic counseling and mutation screening of this gene should be considered in at-risk patients. Death usually occurred in the first 3 months of life due to sepsis, feeding problems and respiratory distress. With improved neonatal care and early introduction of retinoids, its survival rate has increased.

Harlequin Ichthyosis: A Surgical Perspective.

Limb constriction or encasement in patients with harlequin ichthyosis can cause tissue injury resulting in necrosis and auto-amputation. Surgical release of constrictive plaques has been previously demonstrated, but the perioperative and intraoperative considerations surrounding this infrequent intervention have not been discussed in detail. This report documents a case of harlequin ichthyosis requiring surgical treatment, focusing on the importance of early surgical consultation, risks of surgery, indications for and timing of surgical intervention, and the details of the operation.

Inherited ichthyosis: Non-syndromic forms.

Inherited ichthyoses are a group of genetic disorders characterized by generalized dry skin, scaling and hyperkeratosis, and often associated with erythroderma. These manifestations are due to mutations in genes mostly involved in skin barrier formation. Inherited ichthyoses consist of non-syndromic ichthyoses and ichthyosis syndromes. Non-syndromic ichthyoses are characterized by the phenotypic expression of the disorder being seen only in the skin. Non-syndromic ichthyoses include ichthyosis vulgaris, recessive X-linked ichthyosis, autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis, keratinopathic ic

Harlequin ichthyosis: a case report.

Harlequin Ichthyosis (HI) is a very rare subtype of a group of hereditary disorders that have in common the accumulation and shedding of significant amounts of hyperkeratotic epidermis. HI has a very specific clinical presentation that includes eclabium, fish mouth appearance, mouth breathing and xerostomia. The addition of a very high caloric demand to the clinical features place these affected individuals at extremely high risk for developing rampant dental decay. This case report discusses a two-year-old boy with HI that presents with severe early childhood caries. The specific accommodatio

First symposium of ichthyosis experts.

On June 22, 2012 the First Symposium of Ichthyosis Experts in Spain was held at the Hospital Niño de Jesús in Madrid. It was a one-day symposium for dermatologists, pediatricians, and physicians-in-training interested in this disease, as well as for other health care professionals involved in the care of patients with ichthyosis. The aim of the meeting was to try to structure the care of ichthyosis patients in Spain. As happens in other rare diseases, because of the low prevalence of ichthyosis and the absence of designated referral centers, the number of patients treated in each center is ver

Keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome.

A 21-year-old man presented with a life-long history of diffusely thickened skin with a grainy-to-ridged surface, verrucous perioral plaques with radial fissures, and diffuse palmoplantar keratoderma with a stippled appearance. These skin findings were accompanied by sensorineural hearing loss and keratoconjunctivitis, a clinical triad diagnostic of keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome. The patient also had a history of recurrent infections and cysts on the scalp. This report draws attention to inflammatory nodules (representing ruptured folliculitis), cysts, and recurrent infections o
