Acidic solutions of InCl3 plus InBr3 contain mixed halide complexes and solvent extraction yields the four-coordinate anions InCl(n)Br(4 - n)-, whose v(In-Cl) and v(In-Br) modes are reported. Two solid products of InCl3 with 15-crown-5 have been identified; crystallisation from aqueous HCI gave a molecular adduct containing InCl3(H2O)2, whereas the ionic complex [InCl2(15-crown-5)][InCl4] was produced under anhydrous conditions. The authors reviewed the clinical value of platelet scintigraphy by using autologous platelets labeled with indium-111-oxine to detect thrombotic activity at vascular thrombosis sites. Thirty-nine patients with deep vein thrombosis, 28 with arteriosclerosis obliterans, and 10 with pulmonary embolism were the subjects of this study. Indium-111-octreotide, a somatostatin analog is the first commercially available receptor-based agent. It shares the binding site of naturally occurring somatostatin and is suitable for imaging somatostatin receptor-bearing tumors. An 111In-octreotide scan performed on a 6-wk old girl showed increased uptake in a subcutaneous cavernous hemangioma, which should be added to the list of lesions that can be visualized on an octreotide scan.

In this case of prolonged fever and abnormal liver functions, dual tracer scintigraphy with In-111 WBCs and Tc-99m SC led to a biopsy-proven diagnosis of severe acute toxic hepatitis (hepatocellular necrosis). Correlation of the Tc-99m SC scan findings with those previously reported for "pseudotumors" of the liver is discussed. A "pseudonormal" scan pattern is described for the In-111 WBC scintigraphy. Discordance between In-111 WBC and Tc-99m SC scintigraphy in this clinical setting should raise the possibility of hepatic necrosis as a diagnostic alternative to hepatic abscess.

Indium-111-labeled leukocyte scintigraphy was performed on a 44-yr-old man to exclude an occult abscess. Four- and twenty-four-hour images of the abdomen revealed splenic photopenia except for a rim of activity medially. A subsequent computed tomography (CT) study demonstrated necrosis or hemorrhage of the spleen except for a medial rim. Exploratory laparotomy demonstrated necrotizing vasculitis with granuloma formation consistent with Wegener's granulomatosis and a rim of viable splenic tissue corresponding to the radionuclide and CT studies.

Indium-labelling of red cells is hampered by its high elution rate and short physical half-life. From a study of 23 pathological cases, it is demonstrated that the simultaneous study of 111In- and 51Cr-labelled red cells could only be useful in haemolytic anaemias in which the mechanisms (corpuscular or extra-corpuscular) of the cell destruction is in question.

Intracardiac and arterial thrombi were examined by scintigraphy using In-111-oxine labeled autologous platelets. In 22 cases of myocardial infarction including six with ventricular aneurysms, four had positive findings of thrombi on imaging and detected also by echocardiography. The withdrawal of Cr-chromate has meant that the technique commonly used for direct measurement of red cell volume has had to be replaced. Most centres moved to a Tc erythrocyte label, however, Tc is known to dissociate over time.
