BACKGROUND: Infant mortality rate is regarded as an important and sensitive indicator of the health status of a community. It also reflects the living standard of the people and the effectiveness of interventions for improving maternal and child health. Multiple factors related to social and economic conditions, health care and environment have a significant role to play on childhood mortality and improving childhood mortality is a national priority. The present study was planned to 1) determine the mortality rate among neonates and infants. 2) identification of pattern of various factors in r…

In the United States, different racial and ethnic groups have very different infant mortality patterns. When assessing the relative contribution of the percentage of preterm births and gestational age-specific infant mortality rates to racial and ethnic infant mortality differences, we found that for non-Hispanic black women, 78 percent of their elevated infant mortality rate compared with non-Hispanic white women was due to their higher percentage of preterm births, while 22 percent was due to higher gestational age-specific infant mortality rates (primarily at 34 weeks of gestation or more).…

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The rate and correlates of infant death in those born to opioid-dependent women are unclear. This study aims to determine the infant mortality rate of infants born to women on a methadone program during pregnancy and to identify any modifiable risk factors.
DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective study of live births to all women in New South Wales, Australia during the period 1995-2002. Using record linkage four groups were compared: (i) live births to women on a methadone program during pregnancy who subsequently died during infancy; (ii) live births to women not on a met…

BACKGROUND: Infant mortality of ethnic minorities in The Netherlands (10% of the population) is twice as high as in the indigenous Dutch population. Causes of death are different for the diverse migrant groups.
METHODS: Hospital records of nearly 600 infants who died in the four major cities between 1995 and 1998 were analysed according to the cause of death, ethnicity, and possible heredity.
RESULTS: There was a four to five times higher proportion of hereditary causes of death in the Moroccan and Turkish population, compared with the Surinamese/Antillians and indigenous Dutch.

OBJECTIVES: We examine the scope and nature of the recommendations that emerged from the Healthy Start Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) projects and explore their use to promote systems change.
METHODS: The FIMR process of 16 of the 22 federal Healthy Start projects was reviewed. We analyzed data from a June 1996 survey developed and administered by the MCH Bureau which gathered information about recommendations produced by the FIMRs. We supplemented these data with information gathered through follow-up telephone interviews and by abstracting information from grant documents.

PURPOSE: To assess the regional patterns of infant mortality due to lethal congenital anomalies, and the potential reasons for the regional patterns.
METHOD: The study analyzed 2,507 infant deaths due to lethal congenital anomalies among 1,178,452 live births in 9 of the 12 Canadian provinces and territories from 1990 to 1995 recorded in Statistics Canada's live birth and death data bases.
RESULTS: Compared with the province of Quebec, congenital anomaly-attributed infant mortality was higher in Newfoundland, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. These differences in infant mortality were substantial f…

Changes in infant mortality rate (IM) in Japan were observed over a 41-year period, since the end of the Second World War (1947-1987). Both neonatal mortality rate (NM) and infant mortality rate excluding neonatal deaths (IEN) were measured. It was observed that IM had considerably decreased during the observation period. A decrease of IEN contributed greatly to this fall till the 1960s and less so since the 1970s. The slope of the decrease of NM became steeper after entering the 1980s compared with that of IEN, and this contributed to the decrease of IM in this period. In order to analyse thi…

To describe underlying causes of infant death by birth weight, we used data from the 1980 National Infant Mortality Surveillance project and aggregated International Classification of Diseases codes into seven categories: perinatal conditions, infections, congenital anomalies, injuries, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), other known causes, and nonspecific or unknown causes. Compared with heavier infants, infants with birth weights of 500-2,499 grams (g) are at increased risk of both neonatal and postneonatal death for virtually all causes. Sixty-two percent of neonatal deaths (under 28 days…

This report profiles the woman at highest risk of a low birthweight delivery and infant death, in a generally disadvantaged, Black population in a major northeastern city which maintains one of the highest infant mortality rates in the nation. It discusses the existence of a very high risk subpopulation which contributes disproportionately and repeatedly to the infant and perinatal death statistics. If adequately identified, these women can be subject to intervention programs. Results show that within an inner-city Black population, where educational levels are relatively low and much of the r…

OBJECTIVES: U.S.-born Hispanic infants have a well-documented health advantage relative to other minority groups. However, little published … (n = 7,901,858). Adjusted odds ratios for first week mortality, neonatal, postneonatal, and overall infant mortality were calculated for each group, using NHW as the reference group.
RESULTS: A distinct health gradient was observed in which NHB infants (n = 1,250,222) had the highest risk of first week (aOR 2.29, CI 2.21-2.37), neonatal (aOR 2.23, CI 2.17-2.30), …

Racism is associated with negative intergenerational (infant) outcomes. That is, racism, both perceived and structural, is linked to critical, immediate, and long-term health factors such as low birth weight and infant mortality. Antiracism-resistance to racism such as support for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement-has been linked to positive emotional, subjective, and mental health outcomes among adults and adolescents. To theoretically build on and integrate such past findings, the present research asked whether such advantageous health correlations might extend intergenerationally to inf…

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has made large-scale healthcare investments to improve child health and survival. However, there is insufficient population level data on the current estimates of infant mortality rate (IMR) in the country. The aim of this study was to measure infant mortality rate, investigate risk factors for infant deaths and identify causes of death in a rural population of northern Ethiopia.
METHODS: Live births to a cohort of mothers under the Kilite Awlaelo Health and Demographic Surveillance System were followed up to their first birthday or death, between September 11, 2009 and S…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between receipt of routine childhood immunizations and infant mortality before 6 months of age.
METHODS: This was an observational study of 10,274 infants, in a randomized trial of vitamin A supplementation, who received the study dose and survived to at least 1 week of age. The primary outcome was mortality before 6 months of age, analysed in Cox regression models as a function of vaccine receipt and gender.
RESULTS: Receipt of Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) or diphtheria, tetanus, polio (DTP) vaccine was associated with signifi…

In the absence of reliable systems for registering rare types of vital events large surveys are required to measure changes in their rates. … with 84% being reported. Most events were more likely to be reported if they were recent (p<0.05). Infant mortality rate in one area was 0.56 times that in the other which was well reflected by the ratio of survey results (0.53). Simulations were used to study the ability of the method to detect differences in maternal mortality ratio. These suggested that a samp …
