The postnatal development of stimulated deoxyglucose uptake into the mouse cochlea and the inferior colliculus.

The effect of acoustic stimulation on the postnatal development of deoxyglucose uptake into the mouse cochlea and the inferior colliculus was evaluated. Animals between postnatal day 4 and 20 were separated into four different groups depending on their age. Tritiated deoxyglucose was injected intraperitoneally into each animal and tracer uptake was quantitated by microdissection of the tissues and scintillation counting. Acoustic stimulation at a noise level of 100 dB (A) resulted in supra-normal levels of deoxyglucose uptake for all auditory tissues during postnatal days 13, 14, and 15. The l

Inferior colliculus neuronal response abnormalities in genetically epilepsy-prone rats: evidence for a deficit of inhibition.

The genetically epilepsy-prone rat (GEPR) is abnormally susceptible to induction of seizures by acoustic stimulation. The inferior colliculus (IC) is critically important to audiogenic seizure susceptibility. The GEPR is more susceptible to induction of audiogenic seizures at 12 kHz than at other pure tone frequencies. IC neurons in the GEPR exhibit significantly elevated response thresholds and broader tuning characteristics than normal. These findings along with previous neurophysiological and anatomical data suggest that a hearing deficit occurs in the GEPR. IC neurons in the GEPR exhibit a

Hyperoxemic retinal neuronal necrosis in the premature neonate.

A cytologically distinctive type of acute hyperoxemic injury of retinal neurons occurs in premature neonates. Ganglion cells in the central well-vascularized neonate retina are susceptible to excessive oxygen and this is expressed morphologically by karyorrhexis of their nuclei. We observed retinal neuronal necrosis in neonates who had hyperoxemia of greater than 150 torr for two hours or longer in the first week of life. Neuronal necrosis was strikingly associated with immaturity as determined by gestational age and birth weight: of 30 involved neonates, all were below 2,000 g; of 47 autopsie

Clonidine in the central nervous system: site and mechanism of hypotensive action.

The data presented in this paper must be considered in conjunction with the fact that clonidine is both a partial alpha-adrenergic agonist and a partial alpha-adrenergic antagonist. In the anterior hypothalamus, clonidine, acting as an alpha-agonist, excites a pathway that inhibits excitatory cardiovascular neurons. Thus, the effect of neurons from the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) in inhibiting sympathetic outflow from the vasomotor center is effectively increased. In the posterior hypothalmus, clonidine, acting as an alpha-antagonist, decreases excitation of excitatory cardiovascular neuro

Clinical Utility of Tectal Plate Measurements on Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

BACKGROUND: Midbrain atrophy is a characteristic feature of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), observed in PSP-Richardson's syndrome (PSP-RS) and to a lesser extent PSP-parkinsonism (PSP-P). OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to critically evaluate the utility of manual magnetic resonance imaging measurements of the midbrain tectal plate as a diagnostic biomarker in PSP. METHODS: Length of the tectal plate and width of the superior and inferior colliculi were measured in 40 PSP (20 PSP-RS and 20 PSP-P) patients and compared with 20 Parkinson's disease and 20 healthy control subjects. RESULTS: Tectal

Abnormalities in the central cholinergic transmitter system of the genetically epilepsy-prone rat.

Seizure-experienced Genetically Epilepsy-prone Rats (GEPRs) have increased acetylcholine content and choline acetyltransferase activity in the thalamus and striatum. These cholinergic differences are accompanied by a slight but statistically significant reduction in acetylcholinesterase activity in the midbrain. In addition, no abnormalities were found in the numbers of specific 3H-QNB binding sites in the striatum, hippocampus, inferior colliculi or cortex. Other work has shown no difference in muscarinic receptor function as measured by carbachol-stimulated inositol-1-phosphate formation. Th

Sensorineural hearing loss: more than meets the eye?

PURPOSE: To assess the value of MR in patients with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) caused by lesions other than acoustic neuromas. METHODS: MR studies of 51 patients with SNHL were retrospectively reviewed; patients with acoustic neuroma were excluded to focus on the more uncommon causes. RESULTS: Twenty patients had labyrinthine lesions. Six patients had viral labyrinthitis, one patient had bacterial labyrinthitis, and one patient had luetic labyrinthitis. Three patients had hemorrhage in the labyrinth, two posttraumatic and one spontaneous from an adjacent temporal bone tumor. Only one

1,3-Dinitrobenzene-induced encephalopathy in rats.

Exposure to 1,3-dinitrobenzene (1,3-DNB) in humans induces methaemoglobinaemia, nausea and nervous symptoms. When given to conventional rats, twice-daily oral doses of 10 mg kg-1 1,3-DNB produce methaemoglobinaemia and frequently ataxia after four or five doses. In germ free rats given only a single oral dose of 20 mg kg-1, similar symptoms occur but are of more rapid onset. Light and electron microscope examinations reveal an acute thiamine deficiency-like lesion in the brain stems of both ataxic and apparently normal rats. Bilaterally symmetrical vacuolated lesions involve cerebellar roof, v

[Hypoxia during the perinatal period and the formation of cerebral lesions].

The degree of hypoxia and the cerebral blood flow are of outstanding importance in the pathogenesis of cerebral damage due to perinatal hypoxia. Nevertheless many other factors influence origin, extension and localisation of cerebral damage. An acute total ischemia results especially in disorders of brainstem, inferior colliculi and thalamic nuclei while the most frequent type, the partial ischemia, manifests in cortical regions. In immature newborn infants, posthypoxic lesions are usually located periventricular, in mature infants, cortically. Brain edema preferentially occurring in mature in

Candidate Key Proteins in Tinnitus-A Bioinformatic Study of Synaptic Transmission in the Inferior Colliculus.

Proteins involved in synaptic transmission in normal hearing, acoustic stimulation, and tinnitus were identified using protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. The gene list for tinnitus was compiled from the GeneCards database using the keywords "synaptic transmission" AND "inferior colliculus" AND "tinnitus" (Tin). For comparison, two gene lists were built using the keywords "auditory perception" (AP) and "acoustic stimulation" (AS). The STRING and the Cytoscape data analyzer were used to identify the top two high-degree proteins (HDPs) and the corresponding high-score interaction protein

Degraded inferior colliculus responses to complex sounds in prenatally exposed VPA rats.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) often exhibit altered sensory processing and deficits in language development. Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) increases the risk for ASD and impairs both receptive and expressive language. Like individuals with ASD, rodents prenatally exposed to VPA exhibit degraded auditory cortical processing and abnormal neural activity to sounds. Disrupted neuronal morphology has been documented in earlier processing areas of the auditory pathway in VPA-exposed rodents, but there are no studies documenting early auditory pathway physiol

Structural arrangement of auditory brainstem nuclei in the bats Phyllostomus discolor and Carollia perspicillata.

The structure of the mammalian auditory brainstem is evolutionarily highly plastic, and distinct nuclei arrange in a species-dependent manner. Such anatomical variability is present in the superior olivary complex (SOC) and the nuclei of the lateral lemniscus (LL). Due to the structure-function relationship in the auditory brainstem, the identification of individual nuclei supports the understanding of sound processing. Here, we comparatively describe the nucleus arrangement and the expression of functional markers in the auditory brainstem of the two bat species Phyllostomus discolor and Caro

Supra-Threshold Hearing and Fluctuation Profiles: Implications for Sensorineural and Hidden Hearing Loss.

An important topic in contemporary auditory science is supra-threshold hearing. Difficulty hearing at conversational speech levels in background noise has long been recognized as a problem of sensorineural hearing loss, including that associated with aging (presbyacusis). Such difficulty in listeners with normal thresholds has received more attention recently, especially associated with descriptions of synaptopathy, the loss of auditory nerve (AN) fibers as a result of noise exposure or aging. Synaptopathy has been reported to cause a disproportionate loss of low- and medium-spontaneous rate (

Auditory fear conditioning modifies steady-state evoked potentials in the rat inferior colliculus.

The rat inferior colliculus (IC) is a major midbrain relay for ascending inputs from the auditory brain stem and has been suggested to play a key role in the processing of aversive sounds. Previous studies have demonstrated that auditory fear conditioning (AFC) potentiates transient responses to brief tones in the IC, but it remains unexplored whether AFC modifies responses to sustained periodic acoustic stimulation-a type of response called the steady-state evoked potential (SSEP). Here we used an amplitude-modulated tone-a 10-kHz tone with a sinusoidal amplitude modulation of 53.7 Hz-as the

Pentobarbital anesthesia alters neural responses in the precedence effect.

The precedence effect (PE) is thought to be beneficial for proper localization and perception of sounds. The majority of recent physiological studies focus on the neural discharges correlated with PE in the inferior colliculus (IC). Pentobarbital anesthesia is widely used in physiological studies. However, little is known of the effect of pentobarbital on the discharge of neurons in PE. Neuronal responses in the IC from 23 male SD rats were recorded by standard extracellular recording techniques following presentation of 4 ms white noise bursts, presented from either or both of two loud speake

Sensitivity of unanesthetized chinchilla auditory system to noise burst onset, and the effects of carboplatin.

The gross near-field responses of the auditory nerve and inferior colliculus to noise burst stimuli were recorded through intracranially implanted electrodes in six unanesthetized chinchillas. Responses were studied as a function of stimulus plateau amplitude and rise time, both before and after a systemic dose of 75 mg/kg of carboplatin. Both recording sites showed sensitivity to stimulus level and rise time. Increases in stimulus level and decreases in stimulus rise time each produced increases in the response magnitude, and decreases in response latency. When the stimuli were re-specified a

Functional anatomy of the inferior colliculus and the auditory cortex: current source density analyses of click-evoked potentials.

In the auditory midbrain (inferior colliculus) and cortex (superior temporal gyrus) of awake squirrel monkeys profiles of click-evoked field potentials were recorded. The recording tracks were reconstructed anatomically. From the field potentials the one-dimensional current source density (CSD) distributions were calculated. By comparing the CSD profiles with the anatomical features of the reconstructed recording paths, the components of the CSDs could be attributed to certain anatomical sites. Thus a physiological method for the functional identification of recording sites was obtained. It pe

An anatomical study of some somesthetic afferents to the intercollicular terminal zone of the midbrain of the opossum.

Following lesions of the dorsal column nuclei, spinal cord and sensorimotor cortex, anterograde degeneration was traced to a common target in the central midbrain; the intercollicular terminal zone. Although not all the midbrain projections of the three pathways are contained within this zone, it receives overlapping projections from each of the three body-related somesthetic pathways studied. The intercollicular terminal zone covers the entirety of the external nucleus of the inferior colliculus and the intercollicular nucleus of Mehler, spilling over into adjacent parts of the central gray a
