Perthes Disease: The Quality and Reliability of Information on the Internet.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that up to 89% of parents used the Internet to seek health information regarding their child's medical condition. Much of the information on the Internet is valuable; however, the quality of health information is variable and unregulated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality and content of information about Perthes disease on the Internet using recognized scoring systems, identification of quality markers, and describe a novel specific score. METHODS: We searched the top 3 search engines (Google, Yahoo!, and Bing) for the following keywords: "Perthe

Capture and analysis of radiation dose reports for radiology.

Radiographic imaging systems can produce records of exposure and dose parameters for each patient. A variety of file formats are in use including plain text, bit map images showing pictures of written text and radiation dose structured reports as text or extended markup language files. Whilst some of this information is available with image data on the hospital picture archive and communication system, access is restricted to individual patient records, thereby making it difficult to locate multiple records for the same scan protocol. This study considers the exposure records and dose reports

SURVIS: a fully-automated aerial baiting system for the distribution of vaccine baits for wildlife.

Large-scale oral vaccination of wildlife against rabies using aerial bait distribution has been successfully used to control terrestrial wildlife rabies in Europe and North America. A technical milestone to large-scale oral rabies vaccination campaigns in Europe was the development of fully-automated, computer-supported and cost-efficient technology for aerial distribution of baits like the SURVIS -system. Each bait released is recorded by the control unit through a sensor, with the exact location, time and date of release and subsequently the collected data can be evaluated, e.g. in GIS progr

Confronting the opioid crisis with consumer health information: a look at East Tennessee.

BACKGROUND: Starting in the 1990s, health care providers began prescribing opioids to patients as pain relievers, believing they were safe. However, many patients became addicted to these pills. In 2017, the US Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency to fight the opioid epidemic. This crisis was prevalent in East Tennessee, where many residents were prescribed opioids. CASE PRESENTATION: Librarians at an academic medical center library in East Tennessee analyzed the health information requests related to pain, mental health, and addiction over the last fifte

Random access elevates DNA from a storage medium to a storage system.

DNA has emerged as a promising medium for next-generation information storage due to its ultra-high storage density, long-term stability, and low energy consumption. With the rapid growth of global digital data, DNA storage provides a potential alternative to conventional electronic media. Dynamic random access, which allows selective retrieval of target information without reading the entire dataset, is essential for the practical application of DNA storage. Recent advances in PCR-based indexing, hybridization-assisted retrieval, and electrically controlled addressing have significantly impro

A protocol for neoWONDER: Neonatal whole population data linkage to improve long-term health and wellbeing of preterm and sick babies.

INTRODUCTION: Early-life medical and surgical interventions in babies born preterm and/or with surgical conditions influence later life health and educational outcomes. Obtaining long-term outcomes post-discharge to evaluate the impact of interventions is complex, expensive, and burdensome to families. Linkage of routinely collected data offers a feasible and cost-effective solution. The NeoWONDER research programme aims to describe the short and long-term health and educational outcomes for babies born preterm and/or with surgical conditions and evaluate the impact of neonatal care and interv

A self-supervised language model selection strategy for biomedical question answering.

Large neural-based Pre-trained Language Models (PLM) have recently gained much attention due to their noteworthy performance in many downstream Information Retrieval (IR) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. PLMs can be categorized as either general-purpose, which are trained on resources such as large-scale Web corpora, and domain-specific which are trained on in-domain or mixed-domain corpora. While domain-specific PLMs have shown promising performance on domain-specific tasks, they are significantly more computationally expensive compared to general-purpose PLMs as they have to be e

Multi-scale and local feature guidance network for corneal nerve fiber segmentation.

Objective. Corneal confocal microscopy (CCM) is a rapid and non-invasive ophthalmic imaging technique that can reveal corneal nerve fiber. The automatic segmentation of corneal nerve fiber in CCM images is vital for the subsequent abnormality analysis, which is the main basis for the early diagnosis of degenerative neurological systemic diseases such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy.Approach. In this paper, a U-shape encoder-decoder structure based multi-scale and local feature guidance neural network (MLFGNet) is proposed for the automatic corneal nerve fiber segmentation in CCM images. Highly accurate classification of chest radiographic reports using a deep learning natural language model pre-trained on 3.8 million text reports.

MOTIVATION: The development of deep, bidirectional transformers such as Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) led to an outperformance of several Natural Language Processing (NLP) benchmarks. Especially in radiology, large amounts of free-text data are generated in daily clinical workflow. These report texts could be of particular use for the generation of labels in machine learning, especially for image classification. However, as report texts are mostly unstructured, advanced NLP methods are needed to enable accurate text classification. While neural networks can be

Invited Commentary: Data Sources for Estimating Numbers of People Experiencing Homelessness in the United States-Strengths and Limitations.

In the accompanying article, Mosites et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2021;190(11):2432-2436) evaluate data sources that enumerate people experiencing homelessness in the United States with respect to their strengths and limitations for conducting epidemiologic research in homeless populations. We largely agree with their key arguments, yet offer additional points that provide important context about these data for researchers and other stakeholders. Overall, we believe that it is possible to address many of the noted shortcomings of these data, and once addressed, the data could be more effectively le

Bioresistive Random-Access Memory with Gold Nanoparticles that Generate the Coulomb Blocking Effect Can Realize Multilevel Data Storage and Synapse Simulation.

Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have good biocompatibility and special quantum effects. In this Letter, we embedded Au NPs into silkworm hemolymph (SH) to improve the performance of the device and fabricated Al/SH:Au NPs/indium tin oxide (ITO)/glass resistive random access memory. The device exhibits a bipolar switching behavior with a retention time of 104 s. Compared with the Al/SH/ITO device without Au NPs, the device has a higher ON/OFF current ratio (>105) and a smaller Vreset. The improvement in device performance is attributed to the fact that Au NPs act as the electron-trapping center in t

Patterns and predictors of high-cost users of the health system: a data linkage protocol to combine a cohort study and randomised controlled trial of adults with a history of homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: Homelessness is a global issue with a detrimental impact on health. Individuals who experience homelessness are often labelled as frequent healthcare users; yet it is a small group of individuals who disproportionately use the majority of services. This protocol outlines the approach to combine survey data from a prospective cohort study and randomised controlled trial with administrative healthcare data to characterise patterns and predictors of healthcare utilisation among a group of adults with a history of homelessness. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This cohort study will apply surv
