Resistance of Anopheles stephensi to selected insecticides used for indoor residual spraying and long-lasting insecticidal nets in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Malaria, transmitted by the bite of infective female Anopheles mosquitoes, remains a global public health problem. The presence of invasive Anopheles stephensi, capable of transmitting Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum, was first reported in Ethiopia in 2016. The ecology of this mosquito species differs from that of Anopheles arabiensis, the primary malaria vector in Ethiopia. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of selected insecticides, which are used in indoor residual spraying (IRS) and selected long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) for malaria vector control aga

Understanding the Intransigence of Malaria in Malawi.

Despite the scale-up of interventions against malaria over the past decade, this disease remains a leading threat to health in Malawi. To evaluate the epidemiology of both Plasmodium falciparum infection and malaria disease, the Malawi International Center of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR) has developed and implemented diverse and robust surveillance and research projects. Descriptive studies in ICEMR Phase 1 increased our understanding of the declining effectiveness of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), the role of school-age children in malaria parasite transmission, and the co

Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases-coordinated Multicountry Study to Determine the Burden and Causes of Residual Malaria Across Different Regions.

The burden and causes of residual malaria were investigated between 2015 and 2019 through 5 research projects coordinated by the Special Program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), cosponsored by the United Nations Development Programme, UNICEF, the World Bank, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the WHO Global Malaria Programme. The 5 projects included 10 countries in 4 WHO regions: Africa, the Americas, South-East Asia, and the Western Pacific. The countries represented a range of malaria endemicities, from low to high levels of transmission. The main findings of the pr

Pyriproxyfen-treated bed nets reduce reproductive fitness and longevity of pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles gambiae under laboratory and field conditions.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) containing the insect growth regulator pyriproxyfen (PPF) and pyrethroid insecticides (PPF-ITNs) is being assessed in clinical trials to determine whether they provide greater protection from malaria than standard pyrethroid-treated ITNs in areas where mosquitoes are resistant to pyrethroids. Understanding the entomological mode of action of this new ITN class will aide interpretation of the results from these trials. METHODS: Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) mosquitoes from a susceptible laboratory strain were exposed to PPF-trea

Impact of long-lasting insecticidal nets on prevalence of subclinical malaria among children in the presence of pyrethroid resistance in Anopheles culicifacies in Central India.

BACKGROUND: Subclinical (asymptomatic) cases of malaria could be a major barrier to the success of malaria elimination programs. This study has evaluated the impact of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) on the prevalence of subclinical malaria in the presence of pyrethroid resistance in the main malaria vector Anopheles culicifacies on malaria transmission among a cohort of children in villages of the Keshkal sub-district in Chhattisgarh state. METHODS: A cohort of 6582 children ages less than 14 years was enrolled from 80 study clusters. Post monsoon survey was carried out at baseline be

Human and vector behavioural determinants of malaria transmission in the Nandi highlands, western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission, characterized by spatial and temporal heterogeneity and complex vector behaviours, persists in Kenya's highlands despite widespread use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). The role of human activity in exposure risk remains underexplored. Identifying vulnerable times and locations is crucial for designing and optimizing targeted control strategies that address the intricate interplay between human activity and local vector behaviour that results in transmission. This study examined human-mosquito interactions in three different ecological settings in Na

Malaria pervasiveness in Sub-Saharan Africa: Overcoming the scuffle.

Malaria has posed a momentous health and economic burden to the Sub-Saharan African region. The Sub-Saharan African region accounts for more than 90% of global malaria-related mortality and morbidity. Pregnant women and children under 5 years old are the most vulnerable. Mosquitoes transmit the plasmodium which is the parasite responsible for malaria. The climatic conditions, poverty, and poor healthcare system of the Sub-Saharan African region are some factors fueling this menace. There have been concerted efforts to annihilate malaria but the scuffle has been a tedious one. Malarial eradicat

Estimating Annual Fluctuations in Malaria Transmission Intensity and in the Use of Malaria Control Interventions in Five Sub-Saharan African Countries.

RTS,S/AS01E malaria vaccine safety, effectiveness, and impact will be assessed in pre- and post-vaccine introduction studies, comparing the occurrence of malaria cases and adverse events in vaccinated versus unvaccinated children. Because those comparisons may be confounded by potential year-to-year fluctuations in malaria transmission intensity and malaria control intervention usage, the latter should be carefully monitored to adequately adjust the analyses. This observational cross-sectional study is assessing Plasmodium falciparum parasite prevalence (PfPR) and malaria control intervention

Assessments of Anopheles arabiensis behaviour around bed nets using partial adhesive treatments.

Understanding the behaviour of malaria vectors could lead to improved designs of partially treated insecticidal nets and low-cost nets with less insecticide content. The behaviour of Anopheles arabiensis around cow baited bed nets with partial adhesive treatments were assessed in experimental huts. The study was conducted in Moshi Tanzania, using a Latin Square design with five arms: no bed-net, intact untreated bed-net, roof, sides and whole adhesive treated bed-nets. The data analyses were done using generalized linear mixed effects models with proportions of mosquitoes on the bed-net panels

Pixel intensity of wing photos used to infer efficacy of mosquito control interventions against Anopheles gambiae caught during the RIMDAMAL II clinical trial.

Mosquito age-grading is important for evaluating mosquito control efforts and estimating pathogen transmission risk. We previously developed a simple, low-cost, and high-throughput method to age-grade mosquitoes by computing the pixel intensity (PI) of wing photos, which reflects wing scale loss over time. Here the technique was refined and used to understand wild Anopheles gambiae population structures from the RIMDAMAL II clinical trial. PI distributions from wing photos of wild An. gambiae caught during the trial reflected wild population structures assessed by gold standard techniques, whe

Reducing visceral leishmaniasis by insecticide impregnation of bed-nets, Bangladesh.

The effect of insecticide-treated materials on reducing visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is disputable. In Bangladesh, we evaluated the effect of a community-based intervention with insecticide impregnation of existing bed-nets in reducing VL incidence. This intervention reduced VL by 66.5%. Widespread bed-net impregnation with slow-release insecticide may control VL in Bangladesh.

The efficacy and physical condition of olyset insecticide-treated nets after 5 years use in rural Lao PDR.

We assessed the insecticidal efficacy of Olyset nets after 5 years of use in rural villages of Lao PDR and evaluated the relationship between the physical condition of the nets and their insecticidal effect. Our results showed that most of the Olyset nets remained effective after 5 years of use; however, there was no significant relationship between the physical condition of the nets (ie, presence of holes, level of stains) and the insecticidal effect. The presence of large holes in polyester nets compared to the Olyset nets suggest the Olyset nets are stronger; however, nearly half of Olyset

First trial of recycling used insecticide treated nets by pyrolysis for safer environment: The RINSE project.

BACKGROUND: Thanks to the large-scale distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs), several hundreds of millions of cases, and malaria related mortality, were averted these last decades. However, disposing of the used, and discarded nets, made of non-biodegradable plastics, and impregnated with insecticides, and usually burned or buried, raises significant, physical and chemical, environmental and health concerns. This study explores the first application of pyrolysis to recycle, and repurpose, discarded LLINs, with tests conducted in Lombok, Indonesia. METHOD: Pyrolysis was

Insecticide-treated eave nets and window screens for malaria control in Chalinze district, Tanzania: a study protocol for a household randomised control trial.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have contributed to the reduction of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, including Tanzania. However, they rely on daily user behaviour and high coverage which is difficult to maintain. Also, insecticide resistance among malaria vector mosquitoes is contributing to reduced efficacy of control tools. To overcome these problems, we propose to evaluate a new tool for house modification, the insecticide-treated eave nets (ITENs) in combination with insecticide-treated window screens (ITWS) incorporated with dual active ingredient (dual AI) for the con

Factors influencing consistent use of bed nets for the control of malaria among children under 5 years in Soroti District, North Eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The use of insecticide-treated bed nets has been proven to be effective in reducing malaria transmission in highly endemic areas. Use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) has been embraced by many malaria endemic countries. LLINs are up to 95% effective in inhibiting blood feeding, when used consistently even after 7 years. The challenge, however, is enhancing their consistent use, especially by the most vulnerable groups (children under 5 years and pregnant women). The study established factors associated with consistent use of bed nets for malaria control among children unde

Effects of environmental factors and storage conditions on the performance of Olyset® Plus against sand flies in WHO cone bioassays.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis, visceral and cutaneous, is seen in Turkey and has both public and veterinary importance. So far, four Leishmania species and their vectors have been detected in Turkey. Vector control is essential in endemic areas and several personal protection methods are available including long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). In this study, we aimed to measure the effects of usage and storage conditions on LLINs in a village-scale study. METHODS: Olyset(®) Plus bed nets were set up in different climatic conditions (rain, exposed to sunlight and humidity) and collected after 6

[Autochthonous dengue].

Dengue is the arboviral disease that has massively spread in intertropical regions these past few years. The rise in imported cases of dengue and the rapid spread of the Aedes vector mosquitoes in continental France since 2004 explain the occurrence of indigenous dengue cases among the nonimmune population and points to an epidemic risk. Severe dengue cases are rare, but lethality is highest among children under 5 years of age. Like pediatricians in tropical regions, we must learn how dengue presents in metropolitan France and how it can be managed, and pay special attention to severe and pote
