Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major cause of mortality worldwide, and no effective systematic therapy currently exists. Recombinant alpha-interferon (IFN) has been suggested to have some antitumor efficacy in this illness, and synergism with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) has been reported in several gastrointestinal malignancies. We therefore treated 10 patients with advanced HCC with combination therapy consisting of 5-FU 750/mg/m(2) weekly and IFN 9 X 10(6) units three times weekly. Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis (Ofuji's disease) is a rare skin disease of unknown etiology characterized by infiltrated circinate plaques with sterile follicular pustules in primarily seborrheic areas. Several therapeutic regimens have been reported to control the disease with inconsistent results. We here report on a patient with Ofuji's disease, who was successfully treated with interferon-alpha 2b.

OBJECTIVE: To test the efficacy of systemic interferon alpha 2b (IFN alpha 2b) treatment in the mucocutaneous and joint symptoms of Behçet's syndrome.
METHODS: The 48-week open, self-controlled trial was conducted in 3 phases. After the pretreatment phase of 16 weeks, 20 patients (8 men, 12 women; mean age 37 +/- 7 years SD) were treated with IFN-alpha 2b at a dose of 5 million units 3 times a week for 6 weeks followed by 5 million units once a week for 10 weeks. The subsequent 16 weeks not taking the medication was the posttreatment phase.

Five of 10 patients receiving long-term recombinant interferon alpha-2b therapy complained of considerable hair loss. The pull test and the trichogram showed a telogen count consistent with a telogen effluvium. In 2 patients the telogen count progressively improved despite continuing the treatment, whereas in 3 patients the trichogram continued to show an increased telogen count until interferon therapy was discontinued. Pohl-Pinkus hair constrictions were also present in 2 patients.

Hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) is a chronic progressive disease of predominantly middle-aged men. Alpha interferon has been shown to induce significant responses in HCL patients. With interferon treatment the platelet count normalizes first, followed by the haemoglobin and neutrophil counts. The number of hairy cells in the bone marrow decreases and granulocytic, erythroid and megakaryocytic cells increase. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the toxicity of single doses of intravitreally administered interferon alpha-2b in the New Zealand white albino rabbit.
INTERVENTIONS: One eye each of six rabbits received an intravitreal injection of 1000, 10,000, 100,000, 500,000, 1 million or 2 million units of interferon alpha-2b reconstituted in 0.1 mL of balanced salt solution. The fellow eye of the first three rabbits received an intravitreal injection of the same volume of balanced salt solution.
OUTCOME MEASURES: Media opacities, toxic effects to the retina, optic nerve or other ocular structures.

The high worldwide prevalence of chronic viral hepatitis, as well as its progressive course, have led to the performance of multiple clinical studies. The Authors report the results of their research into the use of the alpha-interferon in the microcondylomatosis of the female genital apparatus. The therapy was successful in 18% of cases.
