Low positive predictive value of International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision codes in relation to rheumatic heart disease: a challenge for global surveillance.

International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision codes for rheumatic heart disease (RHD) include valvular heart disease of unspecified origin, limiting their usefulness for estimating RHD burden. A cross-disciplinary national consultation developed an algorithm to improve RHD identification in hospital data. The algorithm has been operationalised and piloted. The algorithm developed categorised 32% of RHD-coded patients as probable/possible RHD. We outline a series of research initiatives to improve identification of RHD in administrative data thereby contributing to monitoring the RHD …

Clinicians' understanding of International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision diagnostic criteria: F62.0 enduring personality change after catastrophic experience.

International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (ICD-10) has included a diagnostic category of "enduring personality change after catastrophic experience" (EPCACE). Preliminary investigation suggests that there is considerable endorsement in principle for this new category among experts in the field of intentional human trauma, yet many aspects of the diagnosis remain contentious. Criticisms leveled at EPCACE raised issues that question the reliability, validity, and clinical utility of this diagnostic category. In ICD-10, there are 2 sets of doc

Validation of the Diagnostic Accuracy Levels of International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision Codes for Diabetic Ketoacidosis: A Multicentre, Cross-sectional Study of Adults.

OBJECTIVES: International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes are commonly used to identify cases of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in health services research, but they have not been validated. Our aim in this study was to assess the accuracy of ICD, 10th revision (ICD-10) diagnosis codes for DKA. METHODS: We conducted a multicentre, cross-sectional study using data from 5 hospitals in Ontario, Canada. Each hospitalization event has a single most responsible diagnosis code. We identified all hospitalizations assigned diagnosis codes for DKA. A true case of DKA was defined using laboratory va…

International Classification of Diseases coding changes lead to profound declines in reported idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension mortality and hospitalizations: implications for database studies.

BACKGROUND: Database studies have reported several associations between the diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) a … ears earlier. In both cases, the timing of these observations corresponded with changes made to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding system in use for pulmonary hypertension in that particular database. Review of pulmonary hypertension discharge data from the University of Texas Southwestern Hospital-Zale Lipshy showed similar changes in diagnosis code use. CONCLUSI …

The Peripheral Arterial Bleeding (PAB) classification: a novel classification for safety reporting in peripheral arterial disease - an international Delphi consensus study.

OBJECTIVE: Multiple bleeding classifications are used to classify major bleeding in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD), but none have been widely accepted or validated for this disease. Consequently, trials report safety outcomes numbers derived from different classifications, limiting homogeneity as well as comparability. The goal of this study was to achieve expert consensus on a definition for major bleeding for PAD. DESIGN: The Delphi method was used to acquire expert opinions in a structured manner. METHODS: Fifty experts in the field of PAD were invited to participate. Que

Developing International Classification of Disease code definitions for the study of enteric infection sequelae in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Enteric infections and their chronic sequelae are a major cause of disability and death. Despite the increasing use of administrative health data in measuring the burden of chronic diseases in the population, there is a lack of validated International Classification of Disease (ICD) code-based case definitions, particularly in the Canadian context. Our objective was to validate ICD code definitions for sequelae of enteric infections in Canada: acute kidney injury (AKI); hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS); thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP); Guillain-Barré syndrome/Miller-Fisher

Low Sensitivity of International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision Coding for Culture-Confirmed Candidemia Cases in an Active Surveillance System: United States, 2019-2020.

We evaluated healthcare facility use of International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes for culture-confirmed candidemia cases detected by active public health surveillance during 2019-2020. Most cases (56%) did not receive a candidiasis code, suggesting that studies relying on ICD-10 codes likely underestimate disease burden.

Assessing International Classification of Diseases, 11th revision (ICD-11) borderline psychopathology: Psychometric validation of the German Borderline Pattern Scale (BPS) in a psychiatric sample.

The 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases introduced a dimensional model of personality disorder diagnosis supplemented by an optional borderline pattern qualifier. The Borderline Pattern Scale (BPS; Oltmanns & Widiger, 2019) is a self-report instrument assessing this qualifier via four symptom clusters: affective instability, maladaptive self-functioning, maladaptive interpersonal functioning, and maladaptive self-regulation strategies. This study translated, adapted, and validated the BPS for German-speaking clinical populations (N = 405) using a back-translation proce…

Shifts in Alcohol-Related Diagnoses After the Introduction of International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification Coding in U.S. Hospitals: Implications for Epidemiologic Research.

BACKGROUND: In October 2015, the United States transitioned healthcare diagnosis codes from the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM), to the Tenth Revision (ICD-10-CM). Trend analyses of alcohol-related stays could show discontinuities solely from the change in classification systems. This study examined the impact of the ICD-10-CM coding system on estimates of hospital stays involving alcohol-related diagnoses. METHODS: This analysis used 2014 to 2017 administrative data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Healthcare Cost …
