Comparison of Two Oral Iron Formulations for Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Prospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: The use of oral iron in iron deficiency (ID) and ID anemia (IDA) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is controversial. Its lower cost and ease of administration must be weighed against side effects and efficacy. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of two oral iron formulations (Sucrosomial® iron [SI] and ferric hydroxide-polymaltose complex [FHPC] for correcting ID and IDA in IBD. As a secondary objective, we aimed to assess the impact of oral iron on correcting ID, IDA, and disability in IBD. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational, bicentr

Risk of iron deficiency at 6 months in predominantly breastfed infants with normal iron status and latent iron deficiency at birth.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of iron deficiency in predominantly breastfed infants at 6 months of age and compare the risk of iron deficiency between those born with latent iron deficiency (LID) and those with normal iron status (NIS). METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted at a single tertiary care center in southern India. Infants born at a gestational age of more than 34 weeks were enrolled and classified based on their cord serum ferritin concentrations as having either NIS (ferritin > 75 ng/mL) or LID (ferritin 11-75 ng/mL). At 6 months of age, these infants were rea

The Role of Reticulocyte Hemoglobin Content for Diagnosis of Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia, and Monitoring of Iron Therapy: a Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia is still complicated and most of the tests have drawbacks. Bone marrow examination, the gold standard for the diagnosis of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia, is a painful, invasive, and costly procedure. Other methods are also used to diagnose iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia; soluble transferrin receptor, serum iron, serum ferritin, and transferrin saturation are most common biomarkers of iron status that are frequently affected by inflammation, chronic diseases, and in the normal aging process (except soluble transferrin

Iron Deficiency in Adults: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Absolute iron deficiency, defined as low iron stores with or without anemia, affects approximately 2 billion people worldwide and 14% of adults in the US. Iron-deficiency anemia, defined as low hemoglobin due to low iron stores, affects approximately 1.2 billion people worldwide, including 10 million in the US. OBSERVATIONS: Absolute iron deficiency progresses from low iron stores to iron-deficiency anemia. Individuals with nonanemic iron deficiency or iron-deficiency anemia may be asymptomatic or experience fatigue, irritability, depression, difficulty concentrating, restless leg

Iron Deficiency in Pulmonary Hypertension.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a complex cardiovascular condition that is characterized by elevated pulmonary arterial pressure, which leads to significant morbidity and mortality. Among the various factors that influence the pathophysiology and progression of PH, iron deficiency has become a critical, yet often overlooked, element. In this review, the prevalence, implications, and therapeutic potential of addressing iron deficiency in patients with PH are elucidated.Iron deficiency, which is prevalent in a significant proportion of patients with PH, has been associated with worsened clinical

[Iron deficiency in cardiovascular disease].

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is worldwide the most frequently occurring deficiency of a trace element. Meanwhile, the indications are increasing that iron deficiency plays a relevant role in many cardiovascular diseases and that treatment is accessible with intravenous administration of iron. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The aim of this article is to elucidate the clinical comorbidities, diagnostic dilemmas and treatment possibilities of iron deficiency in cardiovascular diseases. The study situation on iron deficiency and iron substitution in heart failure, aortic valve stenosis, atrial fibrillatio

Iron deficiency and cardiovascular disease.

Iron deficiency (ID) is common in patients with cardiovascular disease. Up to 60% of patients with coronary artery disease, and an even higher proportion of those with heart failure (HF) or pulmonary hypertension have ID; the evidence for cerebrovascular disease, aortic stenosis and atrial fibrillation is less robust. The prevalence of ID increases with the severity of cardiac and renal dysfunction and is probably more common amongst women. Insufficient dietary iron, reduced iron absorption due to increases in hepcidin secondary to the low-grade inflammation associated with atherosclerosis and

Perioperative anaemia and iron deficiency.

Anaemia affects a third of surgical patients and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anaemia and can be absolute or functional. Patients may require treatment with oral or intravenous iron.

Iron Deficiency Anemia in Pregnancy.

Through its functions in oxygen delivery, electron transport, and enzymatic activity, iron is crucial for the operation of all cells. High metabolic rate cells need more iron and are more likely to malfunction when there is an iron deficit. Since the mother's blood volume expands during pregnancy, and the fetus grows and develops, there is a sharp increase in the need for iron. Negative pregnancy outcomes, such as increased maternal sickness, low birthweight, preterm, and intrauterine growth restriction, are linked to iron deficiency. IDA, or nutritional iron deficiency anemia, affects more th

Non-anaemic iron deficiency.

Iron deficiency without anaemia is common. Patients may present with unexplained, non-specific symptoms. Iron studies will usually show a low ferritin and low transferrin saturation with a normal haemoglobin concentration. The cause of the iron deficiency should be identified and managed. There is limited evidence about the benefits of giving iron to people who do not have anaemia. If there is iron deficiency, most people can be given oral iron supplements. Iron studies are repeated after 60-90 days of oral iron supplements. Further investigations are needed if the iron deficiency has not been

Iron deficiency anaemia revisited.

Iron deficiency anaemia is a global health concern affecting children, women and the elderly, whilst also being a common comorbidity in multiple medical conditions. The aetiology is variable and attributed to several risk factors decreasing iron intake and absorption or increasing demand and loss, with multiple aetiologies often coexisting in an individual patient. Although presenting symptoms may be nonspecific, there is emerging evidence on the detrimental effects of iron deficiency anaemia on clinical outcomes across several medical conditions. Increased awareness about the consequences and
