Hypersensitivity to pollen of Olea europaea in Israel.

The incidence of skin-tested sensitivity to olive pollen allergens among subjects with suspected atopic respiratory allergy was investigated in various populations of Israelis. This incidence was correlated with the olive cultivars, with the abundance of trees in the patient's neighborhoods, and with the history of exposure of the studied populations to olive pollen. Positive skin reactions to olive pollen, among atopic patients of the Jewish population, is rather high where olive trees are abundant (66%), and lower (29%) where trees are scarce (P < 0.003). Sensitization was significantly lowe…

Stroke in the young in Israel. Incidence and outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Data on stroke in the young in Israel are fragmentary. To obtain an overall perspective and to assess the nature and magnitude of the problem, a study was conducted on stroke occurrence in the young population during 1 year. Incidence and outcomes are reported in this communication. METHODS: We conducted a prospective ascertainment of first stroke in all permanent residents of Israel aged 17 to 49 years who were referred to all acute-care hospitals in the country or died before reaching them. RESULTS: We identified 253 first stroke victims in the studied population; 6…

Immunity to measles in young adults in Israel.

The likelihood of an epidemic of measles in 1990-92 in Israel prompted us to study the immune status against measles in a random sample of 454 recruits aged 18-19 years in order to obtain data that might be used in determining vaccination policy. This cohort had received one dose of measles vaccine at 12 months of age. The measles immunity status was studied by determination of antibody values that were measured by means of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) IgG antibody test. Of the recruits, 84.6% were found to have positive sera for anti-measles IgG antibodies, while 13.7% had negative …

The origin of sickle cell alleles in Israel.

Molecular genetic studies were undertaken to determine the source of chromosomes carrying the sickle cell allele in Israeli patients. Analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) patterns (haplotypes) along the beta-globin gene cluster was performed on 31 sickle chromosomes obtained from 10 unrelated families living in Israel. One is a Caucasian Jewish family, recently found to be carrying the sickle allele, and the other 9 are Arab families of various communities. The Jewish family, previously noted not to carry African red blood cell markers, was discovered to have the most co…

Bacteremic infections in granulopenic patients in Israel.

Forty-four bacteremic, granulopenic patients hospitalized during a 4-year period (between 1980 and 1983) in the Tel Aviv Medical Center are reviewed. Fifty-four organisms were recovered from the 44 patients, including 17 strains in 8 patients (18%) in mixed infections. Eighty-three percent of the organisms were gram-negative and 17% gram-positive. The most common organism was Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Seventy percent of the infections were hospital acquired, and the most common focus of infection was the urinary tract. The most resistant strains of microorganisms grew in hospital-acquired infect

Four cases of Shigella septicemia in Israel.

Four cases of shigella septicemia are presented. In two children infection was caused by Shigella flexneri and in two adults, who had underlying diseases which caused immunosuppression, by Shigella sonnei and Shigella schmitzi. All four patients responded to intravenous antibiotic therapy. In one patient the organism persisted in the stool, but was eliminated after oral administration of chloramphenicol. Shigella septicemia is not uncommon and blood cultures should be obtained in suspected cases.

A genetic study of Behçet disease in Israel.

The frequency of HLA-B5 in 24 Israeli Behçet disease (BD) patients from various subpopulations was significantly greater than in 615 control individuals (P less than 0.003). The relative risk for a B5 carrier to develop BD was calculated to be 5.0. Six patients were offspring of consanguineous marriages, which is not unexpected in the populations studied. Five of the patients had only one HLA-B antigen, which in four cases was B5. Two of the latter were B5 homozygotes, indicating a possible greater susceptibility. This study confirms the reported association between BD and HLA-B5 in a populati…

The Reading of Deaf Arabic Children in Israel.

Studies on the reading acquisition of deaf children investigate the similarities and differences in the reading process between these readers and typical hearing readers. There is no consensus on the nature of the reading process among deaf readers, whether they use the same reading processing strategies as typical readers or depend on other strategies to close the gap. The present study aimed to test the types of strategies used to process written words by deaf Arabic readers with prelingual deafness, compared to their hearing peers, and to test the effectiveness of deaf readers' use of these

The coronavirus pandemic and Holocaust survivors in Israel.

Holocaust survivors in Israel and abroad appear to be especially vulnerable to COVID-19 because of their early life history, advanced age, and associated health conditions. And although some survivors may experience retraumatization because of the pandemic, others appear to be especially resilient. We encourage a strength-based approach when working with survivors to foster resilience and effective coping in this uncertain time. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved).

The Epidemiology and Susceptibility of Candidemia in Jerusalem, Israel.

Objectives: Invasive Candida infections pose a major public health problem worldwide and is a major cause of nosocomial bloodstream infection. Our aim was to assess dynamics in incidence, species distribution and antifungal susceptibility of candidemia episodes in Jerusalem, to better understand the epidemiology of invasive isolates and to better direct therapy. Methods: We analyzed the incidence dynamics, species distribution and susceptibility pattern of 899 candidemia episodes during 2005-2016 in Jerusalem. Results: The overall incidence of candidemia was relatively low of 0.62 per 1,000 ad
