BACKGROUND: In Hokkaido, northern island of Japan, at least seven cases of falciparum malaria were reported by 1951. A survey conducted at that time was unsuccessful in implicating any mosquito species as the possible vector. Although active anopheline mosquito surveillance continued until the middle of the 1980s, there is very limited information on their current status and distribution in Japan. Therefore, this study is an update on the current status and distribution of anopheline mosquitoes in Hokkaido based on a 15-year entomological surveillance between 2001 and 2015.

Canine leptospirosis was suspected in 11 dogs in Osaka Prefecture, Japan and 9 dogs died within a month, from October 12 to November 10, 2017. Eight of the dogs had been taken on walks along the same riverbed and 4 dogs lived in the same town. Logistic regression analysis between a comparative group and the incident cases group showed that the odds of leptospirosis infection was 13.3 times higher (p = 0.044) in the dogs taken on walks along the riverbed than in the dogs not being walked along the riverbed. Follicular lymphoma (FL) is quite rare in children. There have been only two major reports on pediatric FL. The present retrospective study on pediatric FL in Japan, including FL with diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL), analyzed data from 1991 to 2014. Twenty-two patients with pediatric FL were analyzed. Sixteen patients were boys and six were girls. Median age of onset was 9 years (range 4-17 years). In 11 patients, DLBCL co-existed with FL. OBJECTIVES: High proportion of Japanese uses condoms; lower proportion uses oral contraceptive pills (OCPs). We examined the longitudinal patterns for contraceptive usage in Japan and evaluated differences before and after OCP government approval.
STUDY DESIGN: We accessed nationally representative survey data for women aged 16-49years from 1950 to 2014.
RESULTS: Usage of condoms and OCP was 83.4% and 3.0%, respectively in 2014. OCP use before (1.21%) and after (1.97%) government approval did not differ significantly (p=.58).
