Human African trypanosomiasis in travellers to Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Clinical scores such as quick sequential organ failure assessment (qSOFA), early warning score (EWS), and universal vital assessment (UVA) are commonly used as screening and prognostic tools in sepsis. However, consistent findings across different regions and hospital settings remain limited. This study aims to evaluate the performance of these clinical scores and identify predictors of survival in septic adults admitted to the ICU. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study was conducted from October 10, 2023, to October 9, 2024, involving adults admitted to the intensive care uni

Tungiasis: Case Report of a Traveller to Kenya.

Tungiasis is a neglected parasitic skin disease caused by the permanent penetration of the female sand flea Tunga penetrans (also called jig … countries [1, 2]. We report the case of a 44-year-old woman who returned from an excursion trip to Kenya's savannah with an infection of T. penetrans located on her right big toe around the nail. The natural history, pathology, epidemiology, diagnosis, therapy and control of this parasitic skin disease are discussed [1].

[Tungiasis case after a trip to Kenya].

Tungiasis is an ectoparasitic skin disease caused by infestation by the female sand flea, Tunga penetrans. Prevalence in endemic areas may reach 83%, while it is rare in non-endemic areas. However, an increase in international travel to and from the affected regions may lead to a rise in the number of cases in non-endemic countries. We present a Danish case of tungiasis contracted during a trip to Kenya.

Burden and pattern of cancer in Western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Cancer regisries worldwide have evolved to provide useful information on the burden and diversity of the patterns of cancer, information that is vital for establishing appropriate programmes for disease management. Population based data on cancer in western Kenya as captured in the Eldoret cancer registry established in 1999 is analysed and reported in this paper. OBJECTIVE: To determine the burden and pattern of cancer in Western Kenya by use of data from the Eldoret cancer registry. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: The cancer registry located in the Department of Haematol…

A review of investigations on leishmaniasis vectors in Kenya.

Investigations on vectors of leishmaniases in Kenya started only in the last 35 years when the visceral leishmaniasis assumed importance as a result of a major disease epidemic outbreak. Since then detailed investigations on vectors of visceral leishmaniasis as well as vectors of newly found species causing cutaneous leishmaniasis have resulted in identification of their main vectors. Synphlebotomus complex were shown to be the main vectors in Kitui focus while in the other foci Phlebotomus martini has been incriminated as the main vector and Sergentomyia garnhami as a suspected vector. The ve…

Tsetse and trypanosomiasis in the Lambwe Valley, Kenya.

The Lambwe Valley is shared between wild animals in a national park and adjacent human settlements with domestic livestock. Thicket and woodland in the valley are heavily infested with Glossina pallidipes. Rhodesian sleeping sickness continues to be a major human health hazard and livestock losses from nagana seriously affect the local economy. Epidemiology is characterized by periods of quiescence and flare-up, reflecting intermittent vector control measures to reduce transmission. The situation has been aggravated in recent years by extension of tsetse habitat and encroachment of settlements

Mixed infections with at least two pathogens were found in 23 (26%) of 89 women examined for all microorganisms. Infection with N gonorrhoeae was significan

Distribution in Kenya of intermediate hosts of Schistosoma.

A major factor in the geographical distribution of endemic schistosomiasis in Kenya is the discontinuous distribution of intermediate hosts. Biomphalaria pfeifferi is the main transmitter of S. mansoni and is found in the altitude zone 300-2,300 m; its absence from the costal region results in the absence of endemic schistosomiasis mansoni amongst the large human population in the coastal region. Snails belonging to the Bulinus africanus group appear to be responsible for all transmission of S. haematobium; they occur from near sea-level to an altitude of about 1,800 but are discontinuously di…

A study of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis in Kenya.

A retrospective study was made over a five-year period of 53 patients at the Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya, who presented with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. The clinical, EEG and serological findings are similar to those found in other studies. As identified by epidemiological studies elsewhere, the factors which are likely to have a bearing on the aetiology of the disease are prevalent throughout the Kenya, yet there is a strong rural distribution of cases in this study. No cases have been reported from the Masai tribe. These features are discussed with regard to the possible impli…

A survey of laboratory animal disease in Kenya.

Diseases and infections diagnosed in laboratory mice, rats, guinea-pigs, golden hamsters and rabbits at the Veterinary Research Laboratory, Kabete, Kenya, are listed and discussed. Zoonoses encountered included salmonellosis and lymphocytic choriomeningitis. A number of traditionally recognised conditions were recorded but there were some notable omissions. The changing picture in laboratory animal science in East Africa is outlined and attention is drawn to the need for work on related diseases and infections.
