A systematic review and meta-analysis of the antibiotic treatment for infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis: an update.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is a common and important disease of calves. Without effective vaccines, antibiotic therapy is often implemented to minimize the impact of IBK. This review updates a previously published systematic review regarding comparative efficacy for antibiotic treatments of IBK. Available years of Centre for Biosciences and Agriculture International and MEDLINE databases were searched, including non-English results. Also searched were the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and World Buiatrics Congress conference proceedings from 1996 to 2016, review

Cervid herpesvirus 2, the primary agent in an outbreak of infectious keratoconjunctivitis in semidomesticated reindeer.

An outbreak of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) occurred in semidomesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in Troms County, Norway, in February 2009. Twenty-eight animals with clinical symptoms and 12 apparently healthy animals were investigated. They ranged in age from calves of the year to 4-year-old animals (mean, 1.9 years; standard deviation, +/-0.9). The seroprevalence of antibodies against cervid herpesvirus 2 (CvHV2) was 86% in animals with IKC and 42% in unaffected animals. For the 28 clinically affected animals, CvHV2 was detected by PCR in swabs obtained from the eye (8

Molecular and antigenic characterization of a Mycoplasma bovis strain causing an outbreak of infectious keratoconjunctivitis.

An unusually high incidence of infectious keratoconjunctivitis followed by pneumonia and arthritis was observed in beef calves of a managed herd. No Moraxella spp. or bacteria other than Mycoplasma spp. were obtained from conjunctival and nasal swabs. A strategy was designed for characterization of bovine mycoplasmas at species and strain level on the basis of a combination of molecular tools and the immunoblotting method. The strategy made it possible to rapidly assign the bacterium responsible for this outbreak to one of the phylogenetic clusters of bovine mycoplasmas delineated in this stud

Outbreaks of infectious keratoconjunctivitis in alpine chamois and ibex in Switzerland between 2001 and 2003.

Five outbreaks of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (ikc) affecting alpine chamois and ibex in the western and central Swiss Alps were recorded in 2001 to 2003. Mycoplasma conjunctivae was identified from conjunctival swabs by means of a nested pcr in 27 of the 28 chamois tested. The outbreaks occurred in an area covering 1590 km(2). Deep valleys acted as a barrier to the spread of the disease. A total of 409 chamois and 33 ibex with clinical signs of ikc were reported. Most of the chamois were shot, primarily because they were blind or in poor general body condition. Almost a quarter were obser

The occurrence of Mycoplasma conjunctivae in The Netherlands and its association with infectious keratoconjunctivitis in sheep and goats.

The occurrence of Mycoplasma conjunctivae in the Netherlands is reported for the first time. M. conjunctivae was detected in all five sheep flocks examined with clinical signs of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) and in none of five sheep flocks without these clinical signs. These observations suggest a primary aetiological role of this organism in IKC in the Netherlands. M. conjunctivae was also detected on a goat farm with clinical signs of IKC. Experiences in culturing this organism are reported. From each sheep flock at least one strain was isolated and characterised in more detail. Al

Topically applied furazolidone or parenterally administered oxytetracycline for the treatment of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

The effectiveness of topically applied furazolidone (FZ) or parenterally administered oxytetracycline (OTC) for treatment of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis was determined in a field study. Between June 13 and Aug 6, 1985, a study was conducted on a ranch in northern California. Eyes of Hereford calves (n = 103) were examined 3 times each week for 7 weeks. After daily examinations on June 13 and 14, calves were allotted randomly to 3 groups. On June 17, calves (that had corneal ulcers) of groups 1 (n = 35) and 2 (n = 35) were treated with OTC and FZ, respectively. Treatments were admini

The role of Hydrotaea armipes Fall. (Diptera, Muscidae) in the transmission of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

The tests to isolate the IBK causative agent Moraxella bovis from the flies Hydrotaea armipes Fall., captured while feeding on tears in the eye region of infected calves, have failed. Many successful isolations of Branhamella catarrhalis from the digestive tract of the flies and the smears taken from the eyes of the infected calves indicate that this agent is acquired by the flies while sucking tears from the eyes of the sick animals. A similar transmission is presumed by the authors with Moraxella bovis. In experiment this bacterium survives on the body surface of Hydrotaea armipes for 14 hou

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis: experimental induction of infection in calves with mycoplasmas and Moraxella bovis.

Eyes of 14 calves were exposed by conjunctival instillation to cultures of either Mycoplasma conjunctivae (6 calves) or Acholeplasma laidlawii (8 calves). Calves were observed for clinical signs of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), and eyes were examined for the test organisms by bacteriologic cultural technique for 60 days. Acholeplasma laidlawii became established in the eyes of 5 of 8 calves; M conjunctivae became established in the eyes of 4 of 6 calves. On day 28, eyes of 9 of the 14 calves were exposed by conjunctival instillation to Moraxella bovis, and all developed IBK. Fi

Detection of Moraxella bovis antibodies in infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis by a passive hemagglutination test.

A passive hemagglutination test was developed to detect antibody response to Moraxella bovis in tears. Tannic acid-treated sheep erythrocytes were sensitized with sonicated antigen prepared from M bovis cultures. The test was found to be a relatively simple, specific, and reliable procedure for titrating antibodies in lacrimal secretions. The hemagglutination test could be a valuable method for seroepizootiologic investigation of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis: a ring device designed for prolonged retention in the bovine eye.

A study was conducted to determine whether treatment devices could be designed for prolonged retention in the eyes of cattle. Experimental design ring devices were compared relative to their ease of insertion, induction of adverse tissue reaction, and period of retention. The ring devices were also compared with commercially available devices used in human eyes. Ring devices having a circumference smaller than that of the conjunctival sac, but larger than that of the globe of the eye, were easy to insert, caused a minimal tissue reaction, and were retained by the eye up to 19 days. The authors

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis in dairy herds: Presence of haemolytic Moraxella bovis and Moraxella bovoculi.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is a multifactorial disease with a significant economic impact on dairy production. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology of IBK in dairy herds in Argentina. Haemolytic Moraxella spp. presence, environmental and management practices associated with milk production, and the presence of virulence genes were evaluated. An observational study was conducted over one year on nine dairy farms. Ocular swabs (n = 2142) were collected and analyzed by culture and PCR for identification and virulence gene profiling. Epidemiological data and environme

Infectious keratoconjunctivitis in free-ranging mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from Zion National Park, Utah.

An epizootic of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IK) was studied opportunistically in free-ranging mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from Zion National Park, Utah (USA), from November 1992 to March 1994. Moraxella sp. and Chlamydia sp. were isolated from the conjunctiva of two of seven deer. In addition, Thelazia californiensis occurred on the conjunctivas of six of seven deer. Based on field observations, adults appeared to be affected clinically at a higher incidence during both years as opposed to juveniles. Corneal opacity was the most apparent clinical sign from 1992 to 1993. However, in th

Effectiveness of two benzathine cloxacillin formulations for treatment of naturally occurring infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

A field study was performed to determine the effectiveness of benzathine cloxacillin for the treatment of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis in cattle from 2 farms located in northern California. The study was performed between June and September of 1987. Affected calves ranging from 2 to 9 months of age were selected from the main herd when signs of corneal ulceration were observed. The study was conducted in 2 phases. For phase I, the affected calves of herd 1 (n = 21; Holsteins) and herd 2 (n = 43 Angus crossbred), were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups, and were either treated with 25

Whole genome analysis of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis in Angus cattle using Bayesian threshold models.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), also known as pinkeye, is characterized by damage to the cornea and is an economically important, lowly heritable, categorical disease trait in beef cattle. Scores of eye damage were collected at weaning on 858 Angus cattle. SNP genotypes for each animal were obtained from BovineSNP50 Infinium-beadchips. Simultaneous associations of all SNP with IBK phenotype were determined using Bayes-C that treats SNP effects as random with equal variance for an assumed fraction (π=0.999) of SNP having no effect on IBK scores. Bayes-C threshold models were used

A haemolytic cell-free preparation of Moraxella bovis confers protection against infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

Protection conferred by a cell-free preparation from a haemolytic Moraxella bovis isolate, UQV 148NF, was compared to an equivalent fraction from a non-haemolytic M. bovis isolate, Gordon 26L3, and to a recombinant DNA-derived pili vaccine. Three groups of ten calves were vaccinated twice with one of the three preparations and, together with ten non-vaccinated calves, challenged with virulent M. bovis isolate Dal 2d. Compared to the control group, significant protection was observed in the group receiving the pili vaccine and the group receiving the preparation from haemolytic isolate, UQV 148

Microbial community sequencing analysis of the calf eye microbiota and relationship to infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is an important production limiting disease in cattle. Moraxella bovis has historically been considered the primary causal agent; however, vaccines have not been consistently shown as effective in controlling disease incidence. The purpose of this study was to examine the bacterial community of calf eyes prior to disease onset using high-throughput sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA and determine if it was associated with IBK occurrence. The study was designed as a case-control nested within a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Eye swabs were collected
