Chirality-Driven Metal-Phenolic Artificial Enzymes Enable Renal Targeting and Antioxidative Therapy Enhancement for Acute Kidney Injury.

Despite advancements in artificial enzymes (AEs) for acute kidney injury (AKI) therapy through renal redox homeostasis modulation, the trade-off between organ-specific targeting and high multienzyme-mimicking catalytic efficiency is still a big challenge. Herein, we address this challenge through chirality-engineered Cu2+-phenolic AEs (l-phen@Cu-TA) via incorporation of l-phenylalanine (l-phen) to synergize stereoselective recognition and catalytic activity. Chiral l-phen induces electron density redistribution from phenolic ligands to Cu2+ in the cocatalytic center, significantly enhancing H2

Artificial intelligence-based quantification of retinal microvascular biomarkers from fundus photography of chronic kidney disease: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is frequently asymptomatic in its early stages and remains substantially underdiagnosed, largely due to the lack of accessible and non-invasive risk identification tools. Retinal microvascular alterations may reflect systemic microvascular changes associated with CKD, offering a potential non-invasive window for early disease-related microvascular assessment. OBJECTIVE: To identify retinal microvascular parameters associated with CKD and evaluate their discriminatory ability using AI-based fundus image analysis. METHODS: In this single-center case-con

Explainable Artificial Intelligence for Early Diabetic Kidney Disease Risk Profiling in Type 2 Diabetes: Translational Readiness and Clinical Boundaries.

PURPOSE: Early kidney-risk profiling in type 2 diabetes is difficult because albuminuria, estimated glomerular filtration rate, comorbidity, and care access capture different aspects of diabetic kidney disease. This review examines where explainable artificial intelligence may support clinically defensible kidney-risk profiling. METHODS: This narrative review used structured searches of PubMed, Semantic Scholar, and OpenAlex using kidney, diabetes, and artificial intelligence/explainability terms, supplemented by citation chasing and full-text assessment of key records. Broad query returns we

Artificial intelligence strategies based on random forests for detecting ischemia-reperfusion injury changes in kidney tissue during intravital imaging.

This study presents a supervised machine learning approach using a Random Forest classifier to detect ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in kidney tissue based on intravital two-photon microscopy data. A rodent model of unilateral renal IRI was used, with 30 min of pedicle occlusion followed by 15 min of reperfusion. Continuous imaging captured nuclear (Hoechst 33342), vascular (FITC-dextran), and mitochondrial (TMRM) changes in real time. From extracted video frames, 2000 manually segmented regions of interest (ROIs), 1000 control and 1000 injured segments, were analyzed using texture analysis

Pathological studies of the animals replaced totally with the artificial heart. Part II Concerning liver, gastrointestinal tract, kidney, and general discussion.

Twenty-eight goats with an artificial heart (AH) were studied pathologically. Being continued from the previous report, the liver, gastrointestinal tract, and kidneys were taken up in this paper and finally, general discussion was done to get our ideas in shape concerning the pathophysiological status of the goat. Central necrosis of the liver was always observed in the goats which survived for over 140 hours. This finding seemed to be caused mainly by circulatory insufficiency of the portal vein at the latter half of the survival time. Microscopic findings of degeneration, necrosis, and edema

Relationship between the diagnostic probability of chronic kidney disease calculated using artificial intelligence-enhanced electrocardiography and the incidence of cardiovascular events.

AIMS: A low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is the primary diagnostic criterion for chronic kidney disease (CKD), a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Artificial intelligence-enhanced electrocardiography (AI-ECG) has demonstrated high diagnostic performance for CKD. However, it remains unclear whether the diagnostic probability derived from AI-ECG for CKD (AIECG-CKD-DP) can also predict future cardiovascular events. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed data from 16,984 patients in the Shinken Database who underwent AI-ECG and were followed up. Based on their baseline

Predicting long-term kidney graft failure using novel multi-omic blood-based biomarkers and artificial intelligence tools.

Kidney transplantation (KT) remains the preferred treatment for end-stage renal disease. With advancements in immunosuppressive regimens and KT surveillance, graft survival has improved, though mainly in short-term. Meanwhile, aging populations with multimorbidity and expanding donor criteria shape a new landscape for KT management. Numerous prediction tools, including genomic, transcriptomic and/or proteomic panels or biomarkers, have been developed for short-to-interim outcomes, yet variable outcome definitions, modest samples and limited external replication preclude clinical utility. The t

Artificial neural network for the prediction model of glomerular filtration rate to estimate the normal or abnormal stages of kidney using gamma camera.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is evaluated based on glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using a gamma camera in the nuclear medicine center or hospital in a routine procedure, but the gamma camera does not provide the accurate stages of the diseases. Therefore, this research aimed to find out the normal or abnormal stages of CKD based on the value of GFR using an artificial neural network (ANN). METHODS: Two hundred fifty (Training 188, Testing 62) kidney patients who underwent the ultrasonography test to diagnose the renal test in our nuclear medical centre were scanned using gamma ca

Limitation of existing GFR estimating equations and application of artificial intelligence in improving GFR estimation and chronic kidney disease progression in people with diabetes.

The Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) 2009 equation is the most commonly used equation for estimating glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in clinical practice. However, recent studies have questioned the accuracy of this equation in estimating GFR in people with diabetes. We conducted a comprehensive review of existing literature on the role of artificial intelligence and machine learning in estimating GFR and the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD), specifically in people with diabetes. Artificial intelligence, including machine learning and image-based deep lea

Dynamic prediction of renal survival among deeply phenotyped kidney transplant recipients using artificial intelligence: an observational, international, multicohort study.

BACKGROUND: Kidney allograft failure is a common cause of end-stage renal disease. We aimed to develop a dynamic artificial intelligence approach to enhance risk stratification for kidney transplant recipients by generating continuously refined predictions of survival using updates of clinical data. METHODS: In this observational study, we used data from adult recipients of kidney transplants from 18 academic transplant centres in Europe, the USA, and South America, and a cohort of patients from six randomised controlled trials. The development cohort comprised patients from four centres in F

Serum KIM-1 molecular early warning radar: SERS combined with artificial intelligence for accurate early diagnosis of chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become a major global public health issue. Due to its insidious onset and atypical early symptoms, patients often fail to detect it in time and receive effective intervention. Therefore, conducting early screening and diagnosis is of great significance for delaying the progression of renal failure and reducing the burden on patients and society. Combining surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology, immunochromatography and artificial intelligence algorithm, this study utilized serum kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) molecule as a key biomarker to constr
