Opportunistic pathogens have become increasingly relevant as the causative agents of clinical disease and pathological lesions in laboratory animals. This study was conducted to evaluate the role of Klebsiella oxytoca as an opportunistic pathogen in laboratory rodents. Therefore, K. oxytoca-induced lesions were studied from 2004 to early 2006 in naturally infected rodent colonies maintained at The Jackson Laboratory (TJL), Bar Harbor, USA, the Animal Research Centre (Tierforschungszentrum, TFZ) of the University of Ulm, Germany and the Central Animal Facility (ZTM) of the Hannover Medical Scho

Diagnosing fungal infections remains a problem, particularly in the immunocompromised patient. Symptoms are mostly non-specific and colonization is difficult to distinguish from invasive disease. Existing diagnostic tools often lack sensitivity. Thus, the combination of various diagnostic tools is mandatory to allow earlier diagnosis of systemic fungal infections. Microscopy, culture based methods, antigen detection, and PCR may help to facilitate and accelerate the diagnosis. Galactomannan and glucan are two promising antigens that may be useful for early detection of the infection, but also

We report an outbreak of laboratory-acquired Brucella abortus infection originating in the accidental breakage of a centrifuge tube. A total of 12 laboratory workers were infected (attack rate of 31%), with an incubation time ranging from 6 weeks to 5 months. Antibody titers were evaluated weekly in all personnel exposed, allowing the diagnosis of the infection in most cases before the onset of clinical symptoms, so that specific therapy could be administrated.

Giemsa and fluorescence antibody (FA) staining were used to diagnose patients clinically suspected to be suffering from trachoma. A total of 52 controls i.e. individuals with refractive errors and no clinical trachoma and 173 cases suffering from different stages of trachoma were studied. FA was found to be 2.52 times more sensitive in confirming the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis compared to Giemsa staining. 28/52 (53.8%) and 4/52 (7.,69%) controls were also positive by FA and Giemsa staining, respectively, indicating sub-clinical infection without symptoms. Post treatment staining with bo

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine infection with rubella, cytomegalovirus (CMV), varicella zoster virus (VZV), parvovirus B19 and human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) may occur following maternal infection. Diagnosis of congenital infection in the neonate is dependent on the appropriate laboratory techniques being used. Prenatal diagnosis of intrauterine infection may also be indicated. Herpes simplex virus (HSV), HIV-1, VZV, enteroviruses, hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C viruses (HCV), human T-cell lymphotropic viruses (HTLV-1 and 2) and genital papillomaviruses (PVs) may be acquired at deliv

A review of isolates of Neisseria meningitidis and other laboratory evidence of meningococcal infection was carried out for the period 1990-1995. Thirty-three patients with evidence of meningococcal disease were identified over the six year period. Group B organisms were the most commonly identified, but an increase in Group C has occurred and is almost equal in number. Data from clinical, laboratory and public health sources should be centralized in a National Surveillance Centre.

The laboratory is essential in the diagnosis and management of UTIs. The presence of pyuria and bacteriuria, the two most important indicators of UTIs, are most accurately determined by standard techniques. In quantitating pyuria, the finding of greater than or equal to 10 leukocytes/mm3 of urine by either hemocytometry or direct microscopy correlates highly with symptomatic, culture-proven UTIs. The determination of bacteriuria by direct microscopy is inaccurate, particularly at lower levels of bacteriuria; thus, quantitative urine cultures remain the most accurate measure of bacteriuria. Although zoonotic spread of infectious disease continues to occur in laboratory animals used in biomedical research, reported outbreaks have been minimized with the advent of rigorous veterinary and husbandry procedures, the use of commercially reared animals, and the institution of appropriate personnel health programs. Maintaining animals in modern facilities with appropriate safeguards against introduction of vermin and biologic vectors is also important in preventing zoonotic disease in personnel. Nevertheless, established zoonotic agents, newly discovered microorganisms, or new animal spe

During 1988-89 this continuing survey showed 18 infections in the staff of laboratories reporting from 166 centres, representing 21,756 person-years of exposure. Shigella and other bowel infections (one caused by S typhi) predominated, affecting 11 microbiology medical laboratory scientific officers. Three shigella infections originated from quality control samples. Pulmonary tuberculosis affected four workers, including two mortuary technicians, but without detected occupational exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Other infections included one caused by Brucella melitensis. Hepatitis was

The authors used immunofluorescence and immunoperoxidase tests to study a group of 101 patients with acute or chronic conjunctivitis, etiologically unrelated to conventional bacterial pathogens, and a control group of 30 healthy adults. Positive titers of IgG in serum and of IgA in lacrimal secretions against Chlamydia, detected by IPA, correlated with the identification of microorganisms by direct immunofluorescence. The use of both tests allows a precise evaluation of the stage of the infection and of its evolutive pattern.

It is obvious that in order to obtain precise informations from bacteriology in the diagnosis of female genital infections, it is absolutely necessary to respect a number of rules in the sampling method and their transportation. The author summarizes all these restrictions, of which physicians often are not too well aware of.

During 1986-87 this continuing survey showed 15 specific infections in the staff of 235 laboratories, representing 28,524 person years of exposure. The community was the probable source of four of the five cases of tuberculosis and one of the five cases of salmonellosis. Occupational exposure was the probable cause of four infections by Shigella flexneri, three by Salmonella typhimurium, and one by S typhi, all affecting medical laboratory scientific officers (MLSOs) in microbiology. Occupational exposure was also the probable cause of one case of tuberculosis in a mortuary technician and one

During 1982-3, 31 specific and 12 uncharacterized infections were reported from 30 of 240 laboratories, representing 29 223 person-years of experience. Thirteen cases of hepatitis included 10 of type B or non-A, non-B hepatitis of probable occupational origin (attributable incidence 34.2 per 100 000 person years) affecting haematology, biochemistry, and postmortem workers. Of nine cases of tuberculosis, three were probably acquired in the laboratory (attributable incidence 10.3 per 100 000 person years) and affected microbiology, morbid anatomy, and postmortem staff. Microbiology staff also ac

This survey through the Association of Clinical Pathologists was continued and extended for 1980-81, with the help of the Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences. Hepatitis maintained a low attack rate of 26/100 000 person-years, including only three cases of hepatitis B probably attributable to laboratory work (attack rate 9). Nineteen cases of tuberculosis (attack rate 56) included 14 of probable occupational origin (attack rate 41) half of which involved post-mortem or mortuary work. Thirteen bacterial infections of the bowel (attack rate 38, predominantly shigellosis) involved almost excl
