There is no adequate data in the medical literature defining serum CA-125 levels after laparotomy. Therefore we designed this prospective study to evaluate the effects of laparotomy for hysterectomy on serum CA-125 levels. Ninety-four women (mean age 44.6 +/- 6.9 years) were included in the study between January, 2001 and April, 2003. Major pancreatic trauma challenges the trauma surgeon with diagnostic problems and choices of treatment modalities. The most important determinant guiding management is the integrity of the main pancreatic duct. The preoperative and intraoperative assessment and treatment of pancreatic injury may be difficult, especially when concurrent severe injuries are present. There are alternative approaches in the management of the traumatized pancreas when ductal injury is not obvious during initial exploratory laparotomy.

All the complications requiring laparotomy among 680 children who were diagnosed as having typhoid fever between 1981 and 1990, at Hacettepe University Children's Hospital, were retrospectively analyzed. Nine patients with completely perforating intrauterine contraceptive devices are presented. In all cases, the device was removed by explorative laparotomy. In eight out of the nine women, the device was found to be embedded in the omentum or vesical peritoneal plica. The advantages of explorative laparotomy over laparoscopy or colpotomy are emphasized.
