A vulvar leiomyosarcoma was diagnosed in an 8-year-old mixed-breed, sexually intact cat. The cat had a history of vulvar swelling, bleeding and stranguria. The mass was located at the ventral commissura of the vulva. The cut surface of the mass was lobulated and greyish-white, with areas of necrosis and haemorrhage. Histologically, it was a spindle-cell sarcoma consisting of interlacing bundles of very elongated neoplastic smooth muscle cells and variably dense collagenous matrix separated by individual cells or streams. It also contained areas of focal necrosis and haemorrhage. The mitotic in…

Leiomyosarcomas of the spermatic cord are rare tumours. The authors report the case of a 65-year-old man presenting with painful mass of the left side of the scrotum with scrotal ulceration. Left transinguinal orchidectomy and left hemiscrotectomy were performed and histological examination of the operative specimen revealed leiomyosarcoma of the spermatic cord. No metastases were observed on thoracoabdominopelvic CT. One month after discharge from hospital, the patient presented with delayed healing and complementary scrotal resection and adjuvant radiotherapy were performed. Local and region…

BACKGROUND: Myxoid leiomyosarcoma (MLMS) of the vulva is a mesenchymal tumor with only five reported cases in the literature.
CASE: We report an 85-year-old woman with a unilateral nonulcerating, painless vulvar mass. According to the patient, the mass slowly enlarged. Initial biopsies were benign. However, clinically, this lesion was suspicious for a soft tissue tumor. Therefore, the mass was removed by a wide local excision. Definitive histology revealed a myxoid leiomyosarcoma of the vulva. At present, 25 months after the operation, the patient is well with no sign of recurrence.
CONCLUSI…

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyosarcoma of the broad ligament is an extremely rare malignant tumor, with only 13 cases reported.
OBSERVATION: A 52 year-old woman consulted for pelvic pain and metrorrhagia. Clinical examination revealed a multinodular mass on the right side of the uterus. Pelvic ultrasound revealed a heterogeneous mass. Laparotomy found a malignant tumor arising from the right broad ligament. It was independent from the proximity organs. Treatment consisted in resection and total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The histologic examination led to the diagnosis of leiomyo…

We present a case of an inflammatory leiomyosarcoma, a variant of smooth muscle cell tumor that could be mistaken for inflammatory malignant fibrous histiocytoma. The inflammatory cell infiltrates obscured the basic architecture of the tumor, and immunohistochemistry was required to arrive at the proper diagnosis. Since inflammatory leiomyosarcomas are rare and possibly misdiagnosed neoplasms, there are not enough data to indicate whether they deserve to be separated from other malignant smooth muscle cell neoplasms. By reporting this case we hope that more pathologists will become aware of th…

Leiomyosarcoma usually arises in the uterus, gastrointestinal tract, retroperitoneum, or soft tissue. Primary leiomyosarcoma of bone is rare. We encountered two patients with primary leiomyosarcoma of the femur; one was a 24-year-old woman and the other, a 41-year-old woman. Bone destruction observed on plain radiographs was minimal in both patients. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and high signal intensity on T2-weighted images, with these areas being much larger than the findings to be expected from the plain radiographs. Histological examin…

We report a case of renal leiomyosarcoma arising from the renal pelvis with immunohistochemical confirmation of the diagnosis. In this instance clinical presentation and imaging finding are not helpful in accurately establishing the diagnosis preoperatively. Wide surgical excision would appear to be the treatment of choice.

Leiomyosarcomas of the paranasal sinuses are rare malignant tumors. A case of a 68-year-old female with leiomyosarcoma of the ethmoidal cells is presented. Since half a year she had a stuffed nose on both sides. Preoperatively, several attacks of epistaxis on the right side occurred. CT scans showed a tumor of the ethmoidal cells on the right side. The tumor was completely removed via a functional endoscopic endonasal approach and right sphenoethmoidectomy and maxillary sinus surgery. The operation was followed by a radiotherapy with 72 Gy. Up to 29 months after the operation local recurrence …

A case of a 74-year-old man with leiomyosarcoma of the pulmonary vein is reported. The patient felt transient chest oppression while playing golf 1 week before he visited a clinic with a common cold. He underwent an ultrasonographic examination of the heart, which showed a mass lesion in the left atrium. The preoperative clinical diagnosis was myxoma of the left atrium. Cardiac surgery revealed the mass to be a leiomyosarcoma, probably extending from the left inferior pulmonary vein. The patient underwent a left lower lobectomy of the lung, and the tumor was confirmed to have originated from t…

A 58-year-old woman has dyspnea and palpitations which reveal a leiomyosarcoma of the right ventricle. The medical imaging shows a lobulated sessile tumor attached to the ventricular septum and the tricuspid valve extending into the pulmonary artery trunk. The resection is performed with a tricuspid valvoplasty. In spite of chemotherapy (epirubicin-cyclophosphamide), relapse is observed with pulmonary metastases 17 months after the surgery. The death becomes on 18 months in congestive heart failure. From this case, the authors make a review of the literature about this exceptional tumour, and …

We report the thirteenth case of primary leiomyosarcoma of the ureter, as well as a summary of previous cases. It is the first case reported to be studied by computer tomography and immunohistochemical procedure. Further evaluation included intravenous pyelogram, cystoscopy with retrograde pyelogram, cell block for cytology, and electron microscopy. Leiomyosarcoma is a very rare disease that is difficult to diagnose. It has a very poor 5-year disease-specific survival.

Malignant tumors of the ureteral smooth muscle are rare and the prognosis is not clear. This is a report of a patient with primary leiomyosarcoma of the ureter surviving 9 years and 9 months postoperatively without any evidence of recurrence. Malignancy of the ureter was suspected on the basis of angiography and radical nephro-ureterectomy was performed without positive cytology results.

Thirty-eight tumors from 30 patients diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma were cytogenetically assessed after short term culture. The specimens were obtained from the retroperitoneum, gastrointestinal tract, and extremities. Chromosomal abnormalities were present in 18 tumors from 13 patients; 15 tumors had clonal changes, whereas 3 tumors had numerous nonclonal changes. Ten tumors from 10 patients had normal karyotypes and no results were obtained in 10 other tumors from 7 patients. Of the tumors with clonal chromosomal aberrations, 4 had near-diploid (3 hypo- and one hyperdiploid) modes, 8 were polyp…

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant tumour originating from the smooth muscular tissue in any part of the organism, including retroperitoneum where it is particularly aggressive. It is nearly always characterized by a silent development causing diagnostic delay. The results of the primary therapy, which is always surgical, are limited because of the tumoral mass extension and the high local aggressiveness. The Authors present a clinical case which was under their observation and seize the opportunity of making a revision of the literature about it.

Successful resection of a pulmonary artery leiomyosarcoma was performed in a patient with clinical features of chronic pulmonary embolism. With radical radiotherapy to the mediastinum and solitary right hip metastasis, the patient remained well 6 months later. The difficulty of accurate diagnosis is considered in the light of recent advances in the techniques of cardiac investigation.

A-49-year-old man was admitted because of a lower abdominal mass. During the five days prior to admission, he had noted fever and lower abdominal pain. Palpation of the abdomen revealed a tender mass, 10 cm in diameter, in the suprapubic region. An x-ray revealed an irregular collection of gas, 9 cm in diameter, in the pelvic cavity, which appeared as a mirror image when the patient was upright. Based on the physical finding and the results of a barium enema, abdominal CT, MRI, and small intestine imaging, a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma of the ileum was made. Excision of the tumor and part of t…

A 67-year-old woman was admitted on June 21, 1990 because of an abnormality on chest roentgenogram, a three-month history of palpitations on exertion, and a 2 kg weight loss. Chest roentgenogram revealed a huge mass in the posterior mediastinum. The results of needle aspiration cytology from the mass and celiac angiography were suggestive of leiomyosarcoma of the esophagus. The patient underwent tumor enucleation. The tumor originated from the lower-portion of the thoracic esophagus, measured 23 x 13 x 13 cm, and weighted 1110 g. The tumor was diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma histologically. Esopha…

A leiomyosarcoma arising in a uterine lipoleiomyoma is described in a 70-year-old woman. The tumor measured 11 cm and was located in the corpus uteri. It was composed of a mixture of firm, pale tan, whorled tissue and soft, white or hemorrhagic areas. Histologically, the firm tissue was a mixture of bland smooth muscle, fat and fibrous tissue, whereas the soft areas showed a malignant spindle cell tumor with smooth muscle differentiation. Pure sarcoma similar to the malignant portion of the lipoleiomyoma had metastasized to the vaginal wall.
