Farnesol dehydrogenase from Metisa plana (Lepidoptera: Psychidae): Biochemical characterization, in silico analysis and inhibitors discovery.

Metisa plana (Lepidoptera: Psychidae), a foliar-feeding bagworm, is a major pest in oil palm plantations, particularly in Peninsular Malaysia. Government of Malaysia has classified it as a dangerous pest under the Plant Quarantine Act 1976. Effective and sustainable solutions remain elusive despite various management strategies, including chemical, cultural and biological methods. This study explored an alternative approach by targeting the juvenile hormone biosynthetic pathway, crucial for insect growth, metamorphosis, and reproduction, as part of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy…

Parasitism of Corn Earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), by Tachinid Flies in Cultivated Hemp.

In a survey on hemp grown in western Kentucky we found an average of 27.8 CEW larvae per plant. We recorded 45% parasitism of CEW in these fields by two species of tachinid flies, Winthemia rufopicta and Lespesia aletiae. Most parasitized larvae were third to sixth instars at the time of collection. We found up to 22 tachinid eggs per host larva, 89% of which typically bore between 1 and 5 eggs on the thorax. 45.9% of CEW bearing eggs died. The number of tachinid eggs per host was unrelated to host body mass, but both the number of tachinid eggs and caterpillar body mass influenced CEW surviva

Inheritance patterns, cross-resistance and synergism in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) resistant to emamectin benzoate.

BACKGROUND: Fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), is a relevant global pest due to severe damage caused on agricultural crops and its capacity to evolve resistance to insecticides. Here, we selected a strain of S. frugiperda resistant to emamectin benzoate under laboratory conditions to understand the inheritance patterns, cross-resistance and synergism involved in the resistance. RESULTS: The emamectin benzoate-resistant (Ben-R) strain was isolated by using F2 screen in a field population collected in Lucas do Rio Verde, Mato Grasso state, Brazil. After ten generations of selec

Insecticide Rotation and Adaptive Fitness Cost Underlying Insecticide Resistance Management for Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Rotation of insecticide modes of action is recommended to delay selection for insecticide resistance. In this study, larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) were exposed alternately to spinetoram and metaflumizone with insecticidal and biological response determined. Five generations (G) were evaluated with at least 200 larvae assayed per treatment. The experiment consisted of rearing field-collected and untreated larvae (M-Control), larvae with successive applications of either metaflumizone (M-MET) or spinetoram (M-SPI), and alternation of these insecticides (M-Rotation treatment) consi

Response of Sugarcane and Sugarcane Stalk Borers Sesamia spp. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to Calcium Silicate Fertilization.

Sugarcane is grown extensively throughout the world including more than 100,000 ha in Khuzestan province, Iran. The pink stalk borers Sesamia are key pests of sugarcane in this region, while other stalk borers will occur in sugarcane worldwide. Application of silicon as a soil amendment has provided plant mitigation to both biotic and abiotic stresses. Silicon has been shown to enhance resistance of sugarcane against stalk borers. Field trials were conducted to determine the effects of calcium silicate against infestations of stalk borers Sesamia spp. and on yield quality. Experiments were con

Laboratory virulence and orchard efficacy of entomopathogenic nematodes against the lesser peachtree borer (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae).

The lesser peachtree borer, Synanthedon pictipes (Grote & Robinson) (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae), is indigenous to eastern North America. It is a pest of commercially grown Prunus spp., especially to southeastern peach orchards where earlier regulatory changes affected pesticide use on peach leading to increased S. pictipes damage. Pest management practices are now having a positive effect toward control of this pest, but cost-competitive biological control solutions that promote environmental stewardship are needed. Here, we tested four Steinernema species and five Heterorhabditis species of entom…

Long-distance dispersal of the gypsy moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) facilitated its initial invasion of Wisconsin.

Gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) spread is dominated by stratified dispersal, and, although spread rates are variable in space and time, the gypsy moth has invaded Wisconsin at a consistently higher rate than in other regions. Allee effects, which act on low-density populations ahead of the moving population that contribute to gypsy moth spread, have also been observed to be consistently weaker in Wisconsin. Because a major cause of an Allee effect in the gypsy moth is mate-finding failure at low densities, supplementing low-density populations with immigrants that arrive through dispersal may

Natural enemies of the maize cob borer, Mussidia nigrivenella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in Benin, West Africa.

Mussidia nigrivenella Ragonot is a pest of maize cobs in West Africa. It significantly reduces maize yields and grain quality, with quantitative losses of 2-25%at harvest, and up to 10-15% indirect losses due to an increase in storage pest infestation levels. Infestation by M. nigrivenella also significantly increased the susceptibility of maize to Aspergillus flavus infection and subsequent aflatoxin contamination. Surveys conducted in different agro-ecological zones of Benin on cultivated and wild host plants during 1994-1997 revealed one egg parasitoid, three larval parasitoids and one pupa

High-temperature acclimation during development modulates efficacy of emamectin benzoate against Mythimna separata (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Global temperature increases require the reevaluation of pesticide efficacy under thermal stress conditions; however, most studies have focused on acute high-temperature exposure, neglecting the effects of natural diurnal temperature fluctuations and cumulative acclimation. This study investigated the effect of thermal acclimation during developmental on the sensitivity of Mythimna separata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to emamectin benzoate (EB). Larvae were reared under cyclic thermal regimes (25→34/38→25 °C), experiencing daily high-temperature exposures of 2, 4, or 6 hours from the egg…

Seasonal Dimorphism in the Compound Eye Morphology of Scythris sinensis (Felder & Rogenhofer, 1875) (Lepidoptera: Scythrididae).

Scythris sinensis (Felder & Rogenhofer) is a diurnal moth characterized by its distinct spring and autumn forms. In our study, we analyzed the compound eye morphology of both forms utilizing scanning electron microscopy. The eyes are ellipsoidal and symmetrical, consisting of hexagonal ommatidia characterized by convoluted folds but lacking corneal nipples. We found that female moths have slightly larger compound eyes than males. Our counts of ommatidia indicate that males emerging in autumn (589-675) typically possess a higher number than males emerging in spring (492-698). This finding sugge

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus and Pseudomonas bacteria affect tomato response to Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) herbivory.

Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is one of the most significant invasive and destructive pests worldwide, causing serious economic losses to the tomato industry. Rhizosphere microorganism, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and Pseudomonas bacteria, can interact with plants individually or collectively to improve plant growth and resistance to pests and disease. However, the effects of AMF, Pseudomonas, and their interactions on plant responses to insect herbivores remain unclear. A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of single/dual inoculation with AMF (Fun…

First Report of Cutaneous Lepidopterism by Hylesia invidiosa (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae): Outbreak Description and Review of the Literature.

Cutaneous lepidopterism associated with exposure to setae from Hylesia moths has been frequently reported in the Americas. Despite efforts to understand its pathophysiology, little is known about the biology of the implicated species, treatment approaches, and outbreak prevention and control. This affects the direction of clinical management and exacerbates the social and public health implications of lepidopterism. In March 2024, the Ministry of Health of Costa Rica was alerted about human cases of dermatitis in the Tucurrique District, Cartago Province, which residents attributed to moths. F
