A 7-month-old girl presented with left acute mastoiditis and a white blood cell count of 79,000/mm(3). A surgically obtained bacteriological sample showed Streptococcus pneumoniae. Direct blood examination revealed leukemic blast cells. Histological samples showed leukemic infiltration of the left temporal bone. The final diagnosis was Burkitt's leukemia with left temporal bone leukemic infiltration. The patient received chemotherapy according to the LMB 2001 protocol from the Société française d'oncologie pédiatrique. Clinical, biological, and imaging follow-up 30 months after the end of trea…

The temporal bone pathology of a 36-year-old man who suffered from chronic myelocytic leukemia and sudden hearing loss of both ears, was studied from the viewpoint of neurotology. Neurotological examination showed bilaterally profound hearing loss and no caloric reaction but good counter-rolling reaction to the right and the left head tilt and no other abnormal neurological findings. He died of intracranial hemorrhage. A study of histopathology of the temporal bones revealed extensive destruction of the organ of Corti, dilatation of Reissner's membrane, leukemic infiltration in the cochlea but…

Erythroleukemia occurred in a BCF1 mouse after X-irradiation. This leukemia was maintained by leukemic cell transplantation successively without changes in the characters of leukemia. According to leukemic cell proliferation, peripheral blood leukemic cells increased in number, and anemia and granulocytopenia developed. Following leukemic cell infiltration, granuloid-committed stem cells (CFU-C) in bone marrow decreased but those in spleen increased. Neither leukemic cells nor leukemic cell-conditioned medium inhibited CFU-C culture in vitro. Effects of leukemic cells on hematopoiesis were dis

Though included in the differential diagnosis of jaundice and abdominal pain, acute acalculous cholecystitis is an uncommon hepatobiliary complication of bone marrow transplantation. Leukemic infiltration of the gallbladder presenting as acute cholecystitis is rare. We describe two cases of acute cholecystitis following marrow transplantation that represented an unexpected relapse with leukemic infiltration of the gallbladder wall.

The infiltrates of intracerebrally inoculated DBLA-6 leukemia cells of the rat were used as an experimental model of meningeal leukemia in acute leukemia. Systemic administration of an antileukemic agent (daunomycin) started at the early stage of the leukemic involvement in the arachnoid, when the blood-brain barrier (blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier) was not yet broken in the pial microcirculation. In those animals in which the antileukemic agent alone was administered, leukemic infiltration was decreased in the dura while it was clearly observed in the subarachnoid space. In those animals i…

OBJECTIVES: Leukemia cutis is a conflicting term to describe neoplastic hematopoietic infiltrates in the skin. Cutaneous myeloid or lymphoid proliferations often present a serious differential diagnostic challenge for pathologists.
METHODS: This review aims to outline the confusion associated with the term leukemia cutis and discuss in detail the foremost common differential diagnoses in daily practice. The review is based on a summary of the relevant literature as well as on the authors' experience.
RESULTS: It addresses precursor cell myeloid and lymphoid tumors that are strictly considere

We report the case of a 31-year-old man with an atypical myeloid dermal infiltrate manifested by a 1.5-year history of recurrent erythematous plaques over his body that previously were shown to be culture positive for Staphylococcus aureus and had responded well to oral antibiotic treatment. The ultimate diagnosis was refractory anemia with excess blasts-2 (RAEB-2), a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Whether it is a specific or nonspecific lesion, cutaneous involvement in MDS is a poor prognostic factor. Leukemia cutis (LC), a specific dermal infiltrate of malignant hematopoietic cells, particu

Leukemia cutis (LC) is defined as the leukemic infiltration of the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous tissue. Leukemia cutis may follow or occur simultaneously with the diagnosis of systemic leukemia. However, cutaneous lesions are occasionally diagnosed as the primary manifestation of leukemia. Leukemic skin infiltrations demonstrate considerable variation regarding a number of changes, distribution, and morphology. The highest incidence of LC is observed in chronic lymphocytic leukemia, monocytic and myelomonocytic acute myeloid leukemia, and T-cell lineage leukemia. Although the pa…

Myeloid leukemias are clonal malignancies characterized by the presence of increased numbers of immature myeloid cells in the marrow and peripheral blood. Pulmonary involvement by myeloid leukemia is relatively uncommon and seen mainly in patients with severe disease. The most common form of pulmonary involvement consists of leukemic infiltration along the lymphatics in the peribronchovascular, septal, and pleural interstitial tissue. Less common manifestations include myeloid sarcoma, leukostasis, leukemic cell lysis pneumopathy, and hyperleukocytic reaction. The radiological manifestations o…

A 38-year-old woman who had been treated for refractory anemia was admitted with severe pancytopenia, persistent fever and splenomegaly in May 1995. The bone marrow biopsy revealed hyperplastic marrow with marked fibrosis. Shortly after admission, cardiac tamponade developed. Though low-dose Ara-C therapy successfully controlled the tamponade, no hematological recovery was obtained. Then a chemotherapy consisted of Ara-C, acrarubicin and M-CSF was done and the neutropenia was improved. However, progressive leukocytosis with monocytosis and splenomegaly subsequently developed. Thus, the disease

BACKGROUND: Congenital leukemia cutis is rarely reported in the dermatology literature despite various authors citing 50% of infants with congenital leukemia have skin involvement. These seemingly disparate facts prompted a review of the world literature that was performed by searching the MEDLINE database from 1966 up to and through December 1992, reviewing Index Medicus for the years prior to computerized MEDLINE search, and reviewing appropriate case report references.
OBSERVATIONS: A 2-month premature male infant was born with 182 x 10(9)/L circulating monoblasts, prominent hepatosplenome

A patient with T4+ (helper-inducer) T cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia developed an erythema multiforme-like eruption, the diagnosis of which was supported by routine light microscopic findings. Immunopathologic studies using monoclonal antibodies demonstrate that despite an overwhelming majority of leukemic T4+ cells in the peripheral blood and dermal infiltrate, the predominant cells in the epidermal infiltrate are T8+ (cytotoxic-suppressor) cells. These findings are different from those seen in epidermotropic T cell leukemic infiltrates and are similar to those previously reported in eryth

BACKGROUND: Oral findings in acute leukemia (AL) are common and could be the presenting feature of the disease, namely, gingival enlargement, ulceration, bleeding, and infection. Gingival enlargement in AL is either due to leukemic infiltration, or due to reactive hyperplasia. To differentiate between them a biopsy is required, but being highly contraindicated, biopsy has been substituted in this study by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC).
METHOD: Gingival FNAC was performed on different sites in the upper and lower gingiva. Each site represents an interdental papilla, which was selected…

The clinical and laboratory features of 37 patients with variants of acute monocytic leukemia are described. Three of these 37 patients who had extensive extramedullary leukemic tissue infiltration are examples of true histiocytic "lymphomas." Three additional patients with undifferentiated leukemias, one patient with refractory anemia with excess of blasts, one patient with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, one patient with B-lymphocyte diffuse "histiocytic" lymphoma and one patient with "null" cell, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-positive lymphoblastic lymphoma had bone marrow cells wi

We present a rare case of intussusception in a 41-year-old man with acute myeloid leukemia without an evidence of leukemic infiltration of the bowel. The patient presented to the emergency room with right lower quadrant pain. Initially he was diagnosed with typhlitis. CT scan was done and showed ileocolic intussusception without a definitive lead point identified. Patient underwent hemicolectomy and histopathological study of the specimen did not show any leukemic infiltrate. High suspicion of intussusception should be kept in mind with leukemic patients presenting with abdominal pain.

Leukemias are hematopoietic malignancies characterized by the production of abnormal leukocytes in the bone marrow. Clinical manifestations arise from either bone marrow suppression or leukemic organ infiltration. Lymphadenopathy is the most common direct manifestation of intrathoracic leukemia. However, leukemic cells may also infiltrate the lungs, pleura, heart, bones, and soft tissues. Pulmonary complications in patients with leukemia typically include pneumonia, hemorrhage, pulmonary edema, and sequelae of leukemia treatment. However, pulmonary abnormalities can also be related directly to
