The Influence of Negative Life Events on Suicidal Ideation in College Students: The Role of Rumination.

This study aimed to investigate the influence of negative life events on suicidal ideation in college students and the role of rumination. Using a cluster sampling method, 894 college students were asked to fill out the adolescent life event scale, ruminative response scale, and suicidal ideation scale. The study revealed the following: (1) negative life events, rumination, and suicidal ideation were significantly positively correlated with each other; (2) rumination played a full mediating role in the influence of negative life events on suicidal ideation; and (3) rumination also played a mod

Understanding the life experience of Barth syndrome from the perspective of adults: a qualitative one-on-one interview study.

BACKGROUND: Barth syndrome (BTHS, OMIM 302060) is a rare, life-threatening, x-linked genetic disorder that occurs almost exclusively in males and is characterized by cardiomyopathy, neutropenia, skeletal muscle myopathy primarily affecting larger muscles, and shorter stature in youth. A greater number of individuals with BTHS are now surviving into adulthood due to advancements in diagnosis and disease management. Given these improvements in life expectancy, understanding the disease experience over time has become increasingly important to individuals with the condition, treatment developers,

Understanding of the life experience of homeless women.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the life experience of homeless women. METHOD: A social phenomenological study was conducted with 10 women assisted by a shelter. The analysis of the interviews was based on the theoretical framework of social phenomenology of Alfred Schütz and thematic literature. RESULTS: The participants face adversities in the street context, with emphasis on the risk of physical and sexual abuse, and seek shelters as a possibility for minimizing difficulties experienced. They hope to leave the streets; however, they see themselves trapped in this social reality, due to the addic

Social problems in plastic surgery residents: a management perspective.

BACKGROUND: It is presumed that plastic surgery residents experience various social problems, just as do their peers in other specialty training programs and in the general public. These issues can occasionally disrupt the resident's personal training experience and sometimes the program as a whole. A survey was performed to assess the magnitude of the problem, and the issues revealed were assessed to assist the program director and the resident in reaching successful completion of the residency. METHODS: A survey was designed by the executive committee and staff of the American Council of Ac

The relationship between adulthood traumatic experiences and psychotic symptoms in female patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Previously, research aiming to investigate the effects of interpersonal traumatic experiences on psychotic symptoms mainly focused on adverse experiences in childhood. As mentioned above, patients with schizophrenia, particularly women, are at high risk for physical and sexual abuse in adulthood. In this study we aimed to investigate the effects of adulthood trauma in a sample of patients with schizophrenia who did not report childhood trauma. METHODS: Seventy female patients with schizophrenia participated in the study. Assessment included Traumatic Experiences Checklist, Positiv

Four-month-old infants' long-term memory for a stressful social event.

Infants clearly show an early capacity for memory for inanimate emotionally neutral events. However, their memory for social stress events has received far less attention. The aim of the study was to investigate infants' memory for a stressful social event (i.e., maternal unresponsiveness during the Still-Face paradigm) after a 15-day recall interval using changes in behavioral responses and salivary post-stress cortisol reactivity as measures of memory. Thirty-seven infants were exposed to social stress two times (experimental condition); the first time when they were 4 months of age and seco

The importance of stressful family events in psoriatic patients: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Psychosomatic stress events are believed to play an important role in psoriasis either by inducing or worsening the disease. OBJECTIVE: In this article, we compared the role of family stress events against other types of stress events on the psychological well being of patients and on their skin disease. We used our sample of psoriasis patients with said stress events. METHOD: Patients underwent a dermatological examination which was evaluated through the PASI index. Simultaneously, they underwent interviews for psychological evaluations. The Hamilton scales were administered to

Stress and psychosis: towards the development of new models of investigation.

The experience of stress is commonly implicated in the onset and maintenance of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. Previous studies that have addressed this relationship have had mixed results and serious methodological flaws associated with study design are common. One central limitation is the over-reliance on the experience of life events as a measure of the experience of stress. Research in the general stress literature suggest that attention also needs to be paid to the experience of other types of stressful events (such as 'hassles') as well as qualitative appraisals of events to

Gender differences in life stressors associated with child and adolescent suicides in Singapore from 1995 to 2003.

AIMS: This study explored gender differences in life stressors of children and adolescents who died by suicide. Three main classes of life stressors have been identified by previous research to be significant risk factors for suicide in children and adolescents: interpersonal/relationship problems, family problems, and academic/school problems. METHODS: The sample consisted of 156 (89 males and 67 females) completed child and adolescent suicides in Singapore from 1995 to 2003. The age of these individuals ranged from 10 to 19 years with a mean age of 16.49 (SD = 2.59). RESULTS: Significantly

The impact of parental divorce for adolescents: a consideration of intervention beyond the crisis.

The effects of divorce on children and adolescents remain a major public health issue. Over the last three decades, there has been ongoing debate among researchers and mental health and legal professionals who counsel divorcing families as to whether the effects are acute but time-limited or more enduring. This chapter looks at the tasks of normal adolescent psychosocial development and how divorce complicates those tasks. It suggests ways that pediatricians and other health professionals can intervene effectively with divorcing families within the context of their role. Divorce-specific resou

The effects of perceived daily social and academic failure experiences on school-age children's subsequent interactions with parents.

The hypothesis that perceived failure experiences at school would increase the likelihood of aversive parent-child interactions after school was supported in a study of 167 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Children completed measures of mood, school events, and parent-child interaction 3 times each day for 2 consecutive days. Reports of social and academic failure experiences at school (e.g., peer problems and difficulty with schoolwork) were associated with increases in child self-reports of demanding and aversive behavior toward parents that evening. There was no evidence of the reverse eff

Elements of critical incident debriefing.

The present paper lists a number of specific therapeutic steps involved in critical incident debriefing. These therapeutic suggestions, while by no means exhaustive, include (a) identification, (b) labeling, (c) articulation, (d) expression, (e) externalization, (f) ventilation, (g) validation, and (h) acceptance. More careful attention to these specific elements--regardless of debriefers' training and backgrounds--might improve therapeutic consistency for trauma victims afflicted with stress-related symptoms. Further applications of these therapeutic steps were also suggested for other types

Attributions and adjustment to life-threatening illness.

An analysis of the role of attribution in major illness and serious injury is presented. Evidence reviewed includes the impact of illness variables on attributions, the association between attributions and adjustment to illness, and the proposed mechanisms of this association. Illness and injury characteristics such as severity and time since diagnosis appear to relate to attributional activity and content, but the association between attributions and psychological or physical adjustment is weak. Overall, it would appear that the attribution construct can describe individuals' reactions to lif

Buffer effects and threshold effects: an alternative interpretation of nonlinearities in the relationship between social support, stress, and depression.

The common interpretation of statistical interactions of global measures of social support and stress in their effects on depression (the "buffer effect" of social support) as reflecting interactive processes within individuals was examined. It was argued that its adequacy depends on incorrect assumptions about the distribution of depressive symptoms within individuals over time and/or different levels of psychosocial adversity. With hypothetical data sets generated under the assumption of a threshold effect in the development of depression and of additive, rather than interactive, effects of

Life events preceding the onset of panic disorder.

The life events experienced in the 12 months prior to the first panic attack were studied in 23 patients with a DSM-III diagnosis of panic disorder as well as in 23 healthy subjects matched for age, sex, social and educational level. Patients showed significant excess of life events compared to controls, however life events were assessed. Panic patients in fact scored higher on the number of events, the weighted scores (according to Paykel's scale) and the number of subjects who underwent a major life event (death or severe illness, either personal or of a cohabiting relative) in the two month

Psychosocial implications of rare genetic skin diseases affecting appearance on daily life experiences, emotional state, self-perception and quality of life in adults: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Since the beginning of human genetic research, there are very few publications sharing insights of the negative impact of rare genetic skin diseases (RGSD) on patients' experiences. This systematic review assessed the psychosocial implications of these conditions in terms of daily life experiences, emotional state, self-perception, and Quality of Life (QoL). METHODOLOGY: A systematic review was carried out on albinism, neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), birthmarks and inherited ichthyosis.
