A school-based application of modified habit reversal for Tourette syndrome via a translator: a case study.

A school-based modified habit reversal intervention was utilized with an adolescent diagnosed with Tourette syndrome who recently immigrated from Mexico. Because the student possessed little proficiency of the English language, an interpreter was needed to help implement the procedure. The frequency of motor tics markedly decreased from baseline to intervention across classroom settings. Results of two follow-up phases revealed that motor tic levels remained below those observed in the baseline phase. Implications and limitations of these findings are noted.

Proof of Citizenship at the Point of Care: Documentation Requests and Forgone Care Among California Immigrants, 2019-2022.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate how often immigrant adults are asked for a Social Security number or proof of citizenship to obtain care or enroll in school, who is asked for these documents, and whether being asked relates to health care access. STUDY SETTING AND DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of four pooled waves (2019-2022) of a population-based, multilingual survey of California adults. The exposure was the documentation request; outcomes were lacking a usual source of care and delaying or forgoing care. DATA SOURCES AND ANALYTIC SAMPLE: California Health Interview Survey public-use files were

Genetic counselling resources in non-english languages: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Genetic counselling is essential for individuals seeking genetic or genomic testing. Whereas innovative strategies for GC delivery are being explored to meet the growing demand on the clinical genetics workforce, it is essential to consider the unique needs of culturally and linguistically diverse populations. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review to examine the extent, range, and gaps in the body of non-English, patient-facing educational resources available for Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients accessing clinical genetics and genomics services. RESULTS: The literature s

Walking the talk: understanding how language barriers affect the delivery of rehabilitation services.

PURPOSE: Individuals who lack proficiency in the dominant language of their region experience difficulty accessing healthcare and exhibit poorer health outcomes. Utilization of professional interpreters can improve health services and outcomes for this population. Most existing studies focus on medical settings, with very little research about language barriers in rehabilitation services such as occupational and physical therapy. The purpose of this study was to explore experiences of English-speaking rehabilitation clinicians working with limited English proficient (LEP) patients, as well as

An Alternative Method of Assessing d/DHH Secondary-School Students' L2 Language Development.

Little information is available on d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/DHH) learners' L2 development. Their limited auditory access may discourage them from taking standardized tests, highlighting the need for alternative ways of assessing their L2 development and proficiency. Therefore, this study suggests adopting processability theory, which demonstrates a universal order of L2 development. Interviews with d/DHH learners and their teachers were conducted to explore their current difficulties in regard to understanding their L2 development. Also, we conducted brief speaking tasks to suggest altern

Asenapine: a new antipsychotic option.

PURPOSE: Patients in the United States with limited English proficiency, referred to as a non-English language preference, are at risk for serious negative medication-related outcomes. Evidence suggests that these negative outcomes are associated with miscommunication of prescription medication instructions between prescribers and patients and between prescribers and dispensing pharmacies. We sought to explore relevant practices and barriers. METHODS: We recruited outpatient prescribers from a large academic medical health center via an e-mail listserv. We developed and distributed a question…

Challenging linguistic barriers to health care: students as medical interpreters.

Inadequate medical interpretation services are a barrier to the delivery of optimal health care to persons with limited English proficiency. Even though Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 requires that interpretation services be available to persons speaking limited English, many health care institutions are struggling to reach full compliance. Communication through untrained interpreters is likely to include mistranslations or omissions of physicians' questions, truncated or slanted patient responses, and inadequate information to facilitate accurate diagnosis and treatment. The Interpr…

Neural correlates of second-language communication and the effect of language anxiety.

Communicative speech is a type of language use that involves goal-directed action targeted at another person based on social interactive knowledge. Previous studies regarding one's first language (L1) have treated the theory of mind system, which is associated with understanding others, and the sensorimotor system, which is associated with action simulation, as important contributors to communication. However, little is known about the neural basis of communication in a second language (L2), which is limited in terms of its use as a communication tool. In this fMRI study, we manipulated the ty

Equity in the Provision of Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support.

Diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) interventions must be accessible to all people with diabetes. To address equity in the delivery of DSMES, interventions should consider the unique needs of various populations. This article outlines the needs of a wide range of populations, including people with diabetes who are racially or ethnically diverse; have limited English proficiency or literacy; are deaf or hard of hearing; are blind or have low vision; are neurodiverse; live with learning disabilities or intellectual or developmental disabilities; have dementia or cognitive impa…

Response to intervention for reading difficulties in the primary grades: some answers and lingering questions.

The purpose of this article is to describe the current research base and identify research needs related to response to intervention (RTI) frameworks in primary-grade reading. Research is reviewed on early reading instruction and intervention, the implementation of multitiered reading interventions, and the determination of intervention responsiveness. Areas identified as in need of research include (a) the conditions under which early reading interventions are most effective in RTI contexts, (b) multitiered interventions for students with limited English proficiency, (c) reading instruction f…

Evaluation of a hepatitis B educational ESL curriculum for Chinese immigrants.

OBJECTIVES: According to recent census data, 1,216,600 Canadians are of Chinese descent, and over 80% of Chinese Canadians are foreign born. Approximately 10% of Chinese immigrants are chronic carriers of hepatitis B, compared with less than 0.5% of the general population. English as a second language (ESL) classes provide ready access for individuals with limited English proficiency who are not reached by English language health education materials and media campaigns. We conducted a group-randomized trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a hepatitis B ESL educational curriculum for Chinese i…

Early use of professional interpreters improves trauma outcomes: Results of a single-center retrospective study.

Patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) experience reduced pain assessment and treatment, less comprehensive physical exams, and fewer explanations of the next steps in care. These disparities persist in hospitals with staffed professional interpreters, raising questions about interpreter access and the impact on outcomes. A retrospective review of 1133 trauma activations at a single center Level 1 Trauma Center in 2021-2022 was conducted. Demographic, injury, and outcome data were drawn from the institutional trauma registry, and patient-preferred language was pulled from EMR data. Ea…

Complexities of conducting research in adolescent refugees resettling in Australia.

Adolescent refugees resettling in Australia are a vulnerable and marginalised population. Dedicated research to help better understand their health-care needs remains scarce. There are multiple complexities which may deter health professionals from conducting research with this population. Health-care system barriers, such as lack of adolescent- and refugee-specific health-care services, complicate comprehensive data collection. Limited investigator knowledge pertaining to culturally appropriate research in a population with limited English proficiency or a history of trauma can have an impact…
