Long-term linguistic outcome in adults with congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is the most common prenatal infection and the main infectious cause of neurodevelopmental abnormalities in developed countries. Long-term neuropsychological outcome of cCMV infection is still not well understood. This is the first study that presents linguistic follow-up data performed on adults who were infected in utero. METHOD: All individuals from a universal newborn CMV screening study in Sweden sampled from 1977 to 1985 were invited to participate in a follow-up study. 34/71 persons (48%) with cCMV and 22/46 controls (48%) were enrolled. Abstract representations in temporal cortex support generative linguistic processing.

Generativity, the ability to create and evaluate novel constructions, is a fundamental property of human language and cognition. The productivity of generative processes is determined by the scope of the representations they engage. Here we examine the neural representation of reduplication, a productive phonological process that can create novel forms through patterned syllable copying (e.g. ba-mih → ba-ba-mih, ba-mih-mih, or ba-mih-ba). Using MRI-constrained source estimates of combined MEG/EEG data collected during an auditory artificial grammar task, we identified localized cortical activi

The role of left angular gyrus in the representation of linguistic composition relations.

Language comprehension is compositional: individual words are combined structurally to form larger meaning representations. The neural basis for compositionality is at the center of a growing body of recent research. Previous work has largely used univariate analysis to investigate the question, a technique that could potentially lead to the loss of fined-grained information due to the procedure of averaging over neural responses. In a functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment, the present study examined different types of composition relations in Chinese phrases, using a 1-back composi

Linguistic and Cultural Adaptation and Validation of the Vocal Fatigue Index into Polish.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was the cross-cultural and linguistic adaptation and validation of the Vocal Fatigue Index (VFI) in the Polish language. METHODS: The Vocal Fatigue Index was adapted into Polish and was administered to 323 subjects (216 with voice disorders, and 107 without voice disorders). One hundred and four participants with voice disorders completed the VFI a second time to evaluate test-retest reliability. VFI was assessed for internal consistency, test-retest reliability, discriminant validity, criterion validity, and sensitivity and specificity. RESULTS: T

Translation and linguistic validation of the Female Genitourinary Pain Index in Spanish.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: We sought to develop a Spanish translation of the Female Genitourinary Pain Index (GUPI) and to validate this instrument in US Latina women. METHODS: Translation back-translation was performed to create the initial Spanish version. Bilingual women with pelvic and/or genitourinary pain were recruited from clinical sites and social media. Participants reported demographics and completed the Female GUPI in both English and Spanish. Agreement was assessed for each item, subscale and total score. Additionally, we performed cognitive debriefing interviews to further tes

Translation and linguistic validation of the Bronchiectasis Health Questionnaire (BHQ) into Danish.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with bronchiectasis suffer from breathlessness, cough and sputum production, which impairs quality of life. The Bronchiectasis Health Questionnaire (BHQ), a short and disease-specific questionnaire, has previously been developed and validated in English. The aim of this study was to translate and validate the BHQ in Danish, using established cross-cultural validation methods. METHODS: To create a Danish version of the questionnaire, this study used linguistic validation, a pilot study in 17 patients and forward-backward translation. Thereafter, 111 patients with bronchi

The Influence of Linguistic Demand on Symptom Expression in Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia.

INTRODUCTION: Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia (ADSD), a form of focal dystonia, has been defined as a neurogenic, task-specific disorder characterized by abrupt spasms of intrinsic laryngeal muscles that result in phonatory breaks. Voice breaks are typically isolated to propositional speech, and reported to increase in severity as speaking demand or complexity increases. Research to date has focused on variations in phonologic contexts and their influence on voice breaks. The influences of variables at lexical and syntactic levels of analysis have been less well-researched and yet may provide ins

Linguistic analysis of the autobiographical memories of individuals with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by biases in memory, attention, and cognition. The present study utilized the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) to examine the content of specific autobiographical memories (AMs) recalled by individuals with MDD during an autobiographical memory task. METHODS: We examined various features of the text (including use of affective, cognitive, and self-referential terms), as well as their associations with clinical and cognitive features of MDD (depression severity, autobiographical memory specificity, amygdala activity), in 45 u

Danish translation and linguistic validation of the BODY-Q Chest Module.

The aim of this study was to translate and linguistically validate the patient-reported outcome (PRO) instrument body-q chest module, designed to measure outcomes following chest contouring surgery. The BODY-Q Chest Module includes two scales that measure appearance of chest and nipples. The translation and validation were performed according to the guidelines from the world health organization (who) and the international society for pharmacoeconomics and outcomes research (ISPOR). This approach involved two independent forward translations, a backwards translation, an expert panel meeting and

The acute mania of King George III: A computational linguistic analysis.

We used a computational linguistic approach, exploiting machine learning techniques, to examine the letters written by King George III during mentally healthy and apparently mentally ill periods of his life. The aims of the study were: first, to establish the existence of alterations in the King's written language at the onset of his first manic episode; and secondly to identify salient sources of variation contributing to the changes. Effects on language were sought in two control conditions (politically stressful vs. politically tranquil periods and seasonal variation). We found clear differ

Motor, linguistic, personal and social aspects of children with Down syndrome.

A global developmental delay is expected from Down syndrome, affecting motor, cognitive, linguistic and personal-social skills. However, not always these delays are proportional; different conditions occur due to several intrinsic and extrinsic variables that must be controlled to form groups of greater homogeneity. Objective To enhance personal-social, fine motor-adaptive, gross motor and linguistic skills among children with Down syndrome and compare them with typically developing children, matched for gender, socioeconomic status and mental age, while controlling some variables that interfer

Bacteria as bullies: effects of linguistic agency assignment in health message.

When describing health threats, communicators can assign agency to the threat (e.g., "Hepatitis C has infected 4 million Americans") or to humans (e.g., "Four million Americans have contracted hepatitis C"). In an online experiment, the authors explored how assignment of agency affects perceptions of susceptibility and severity of a health threat, response efficacy, self-efficacy, fear arousal, and intentions to adopt health-protective recommendations. Participants were 719 individuals recruited through Mechanical Turk ( www.mturk.com ), a crowdsource labor market run by Amazon ( www.amazon.co

Cognitive-linguistic performances of multilingual university students suspected of dyslexia.

High-performing adults with compensated dyslexia pose particular challenges to dyslexia diagnostics. We compared the performance of 20 multilingual Finnish university students with suspected dyslexia with 20 age-matched and education-matched controls on an extensive test battery. The battery tapped various aspects of reading, writing, word retrieval, phonological processing and other cognitive functions relevant for dyslexia. Reading and writing were examined in the two domestic languages, Swedish and Finnish. The most prominent group differences in reading and writing emerged on accuracy meas

Global aphasia-with and without hemiparesis. A linguistic and CT scan study.

The location and size of brain lesions were compared between two groups of patients showing persisting global aphasia according to the criteria of the Aachen Aphasia test (AAT). The first group comprised 8 patients suffering from severe hemiparesis for more than 18 months. The 10 patients of the second group showed either no hemiparesis at all, or motor disturbance at the onset of the disorder with complete remission within 1 year. The sizes of the brain lesions were determined by means of CT scans. The location of the lesions was defined by a statistical model of the brain with labelled anato

Intellectual, behavioral, and linguistic characteristics of three children with 18p- syndrome.

Developmental characteristics of three girls with 18p- syndrome are described, with detailed history and results of psychological and speech/language evaluations completed at various ages. Results suggest that some children with 18p- syndrome have average abilities in selected areas, despite previous reports that these children have mild to severe mental retardation. Two of the three girls had more severe deficits in linguistic, as opposed to nonlinguistic, abilities. All had similar difficulties with speech articulation. It is suggested that children with speech/language delays who have physi

[Verbal abilities of normal adults submitting to an aphasia linguistic protocol].

A language test protocol for aphasia in French-speaking patients was drawn up recently by workers in Toulouse and Montreal. The protocol has been applied to sixty hospitalized sciatica patients of the same age range and socio-cultural level as the average population of aphasics in our department. Only one of the normal patients passed the test without any mistakes. The number and nature of the mistakes are studied statistically in relation to age, sex and socio-cultural level.
