Bilobed mucosal flap for correction of secondary lip deformities following cleft lip surgery.

BACKGROUND: Upper lip whistling deformities, asymmetric upper lip thickness and insufficient vermilion tubercle often occur simultaneously in an affected individual. Unfortunately, these deformities cannot be corrected by a single conventional method. Here, we describe a new technique, using a vermilion-bilobed flap, to address the triplex of deformities simultaneously. METHODS: A total of 30 A Thirty patients were included in this study. Their ages ranged from 10 to 35 years. The flap consisted of two lobes: one lobe of the flap was located at the oral mucosa of the prolabium, which allowed …

Syphilitic Chancre of the Lip.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Treponema pallidum. The primary stage of the disease (the chancre) mainly involves the genital areas. Extragenital areas are involved in 5%-14% of cases, many of which occur in the oral cavity. Among the extragenital locations, the lip is the most frequent; however, despite this, published cases of the chancre of the lip are few. We present a case of a chancre presenting on the lip of a nonimmunocompromised 55-year-old male patient with immunohistochemical confirmation.

Angioleiomyoma of the upper lip.

This report describes a case of labial angioleiomyoma in a 52-year-old woman. The patient had noticed a slow-growing painless isolated mass in her upper lip for 6 months. The mass was surgically excised, and pathological examination was consistent with angioleiomyoma. Surgical excision was curative, and there was no recurrence at 12-month follow-up.

Trichoadenoma of the upper lip.

BACKGROUND: Trichoadenoma of Nikolowski, who describe the first cases in 1958, is a rare and benign tumor of the hair follicle. It is well-differentiated and slowly-growing. The clinical appearance of Trichoadenoma (TA) can be similar to basal cell carcinoma or epidermal cyst. RESULTS: We describe a 44-year-old male who was referred for nodular lesion on the upper lip and a TA was diagnosed. Oral examination showed exophytic yellow mass located between mucous membrane of the upper lip and vestibular gingiva, 1.2 per 0.8 cm. Anamnestic data was non-contributory. An excisional biopsy of the les…

Anthrax of the lower lip.

Anthrax of the oral cavity and oropharynx is well known, whereas anthrax of the lips is very rare. We present a case of anthrax of the lower lip in a 57-year-old man. The infection was characterized by a wide, black eschar, surrounded by vesicles, crusts, and erythematous-edematous halo, with submandibular and laterocervical lymphadenopathy. The oral cavity, oropharynx, and tonsils were normal. Laboratory examinations revealed leukocytosis and increased inflammatory markers. Otolaryngologic, gastrointestinal, lung, and neurologic examinations were negative. The patient was successfully treated…

Cysticercosis of the upper lip.

Cysticercosis is a parasitic infestation caused by the larval stage of Taenia solium. It is common in regions where humans and animals live in close contact, with poor sanitation, and due to consumption of infected meat. The tissues affected are the subcutaneous layers, brain, muscle, heart, liver, lungs, and peritoneum. Oral manifestations are very rare. The most common intra-oral site is the tongue. Here, we present a case in a who sought treatment for an asymptomatic nodule in the upper lip. A gross specimen revealed a cystic cavity containing clear watery fluid and white membranous flecks.…

Lichen sclerosus of the lip.

Lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disorder predominately affecting prepubertal girls and postmenopausal women. Isolated lichen sclerosus affecting the oral mucosa is exceedingly rare. Only 13 patients with biopsy-proved isolated oral disease have been reported in the literature. We report a 10-year-old Caucasian girl with a well-demarcated 1.5 cm x 1.2 cm atrophic white plaque with a violaceous border and focal telangiectases on the right inferior vermillion lip, extending on to the labial mucosa. No other cutaneous surfaces, including genitalia, were involved. Incisiona…

Desmoplastic melanoma of the lip.

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study looks at the prognosis of desmoplastic melanoma of the lip, correlating it with the clinical course, treatment, and patterns of failure. METHOD: Twenty-two patients with desmoplastic melanoma of the lip were seen at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center from 1965 to 1998. RESULTS: Three disease groups: (I) untreated tumor (3 patients), (II) excisional scar (10 patients), and (III) locoregional recurrence (9 patients). Group I had two cures and one failure. In group II six had no recurrences, and there were four failures. In group III, all p…
