Redefinition of cutaneous lymphatic drainage with the use of lymphoscintigraphy for malignant melanoma.

Lymphoscintigraphy was performed on 82 patients with melanoma registered at the University Melanoma Clinic. From these data, precise lymphatic drainage basins could be drawn for the head, neck, shoulder, and trunk. These drawings differed significantly from the classic anatomic studies, providing a functional look at the cutaneous lymphatic drainage. This new method correlates much better with clinical experiences and demonstrates much larger areas of ambiguous drainage than previously reported. Data from the lymphoscintigrams also emphasize the individuality of cutaneous lymphatic flow. The i

[Clinical usefulness of lymphoscintigraphy by rectal submucosal injection of radioactive colloid].

Lymphoscintigraphies about 27 cases were examined by the methods of 11 cases of anal subcutaneous and 17 cases of rectal submucosal injections of 99mTc-rhenium colloid. Para-aortic nodes and common iliac nodes were visualized in more than 70% out of the 27 cases by these methods, and those images were superior to images obtained by the conventional methods with pedal subcutaneous injections. Internal iliac nodes were visualized in 78.1% by the rectal injection method while in 27.3% by the anal injection method. It was concluded that the transrectal injection method should be used to visualize

Internal mammary lymphoscintigraphy in the conservative surgical management of breast carcinoma.

Radiocolloid internal mammary lymphoscintigrams were carried out in 249 women who had undergone partial mastectomy. Only 39 patients, or 15%, had axillary sampling; of these, 19 were positive. At last follow-up, a minimum of two years from the date of study, the overall recurrence rate was 67% for patients with an abnormal lymphoscintigram and 34% for those with a normal lymphoscintigram. Actuarial survival rates projected to five years indicate a statistically significant difference in the prognostic implications of the normal and abnormal internal mammary lymphoscintigram, with 83 and 59% su

Detection rate of lymphoscintigraphy with technetium-99 m for pediatric chylopericardium.

OBJECTIVE: Lymphoscintigraphy has been used to diagnose chylopericardium; however, systematic studies on its detection rate for pediatric patients are lacking. We assessed the detection rate of lymphoscintigraphy with technetium-99 m for chylopericardium in pediatric patients and the factors affecting its diagnostic accuracy. METHODS: Ten patients diagnosed with chylopericardium based on pericardiocentesis who underwent lymphoscintigraphy were included in this retrospective study. The diagnosis of chylopericardium was established by consensus among pediatric surgeons, cardiologists, and physi

Lymphoscintigraphy in cutaneous melanoma: usual and unexpected pathways of lymphatic drainage.

Lymphoscintigraphy is a commonly utilised imaging technique for mapping the lymphatic system and evaluating the lymphatic drainage, particularly in the context of malignancies. This modality plays a critical role in identifying sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs), which are an important tool for accurate cancer staging, ultimately guiding clinical management decisions. Among the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved radiotracers used for SLNs mapping, 99mTc-tilmanocept (Lymphoseek®) has gained clinical acceptance due to its receptor-targeted mechanism and favourable imaging characteristics, alth

Rest/Stress Intradermal Lymphoscintigraphy for the Functional Imaging of the Lymphatic System.

PURPOSE: Lymphoscintigraphy is the criterion-standard method for diagnosing lymphedema, and there is no universally standardized imaging modality. In our center, we use a new approach: rest/stress intradermal lymphoscintigraphy. METHODS: We tested 231 consecutive patients with suspected lymphedema. All patients were studied after a complex physical therapy program to reduce edema. Two doses of 99m Tc-nanocolloid were injected intradermally. Two static planar scans were taken at rest following tracer injection. Next, patients performed an isotonic muscular exercise for 2 minutes followed by po

Reliability of a Scoring System for Qualitative Evaluation of Lymphoscintigraphy of the Lower Extremities.

Lymphoscintigraphy is an imaging technique to diagnose and characterize the severity of edema in the upper and lower extremities. In lymphoscintigraphy, a scoring system can increase the ability to differentiate between diagnoses, but the use of any scoring system requires sufficient reliability. Our aim was to determine the inter- and intraobserver reliability of a proposed scoring system for visual interpretation of lymphoscintigrams of the lower extremities. Methods: The lymphoscintigrams of 81 persons were randomly selected from our database for retrospective evaluation. Two nuclear medici

Impact of delayed lymphoscintigraphy for sentinel lymphnode biopsy for breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Despite universal adoption of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for breast cancer, there remains no standardized protocol for preoperative lymphoscintographic assessment of sentinel nodes. Both immediate and delayed lymphoscintigraphy are currently utilized, although it is unclear how delayed imaging impacts SLN identification. METHODS: Among patients diagnosed with breast cancer who underwent SLNB at Duke from 2011 to 2012, two protocols for preoperative lymphoscintigraphy were used: protocol A included both immediate and delayed lymphoscintigraphy (n = 152), while protocol B inv

Lymphoscintigraphy in unilateral lower limb and scrotal lymphedema caused by filariasis.

Lymphedema is the edema that results from chronic lymphatic insufficiency. Lymphatic filariasis is caused by the filarial nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori. Lymphatic filariasis is common in tropical and subtropical regions. Early diagnosis and prompt therapy can be implemented using lymphoscintigraphy. Our patient is a 15-year-old boy presenting with a 3-month history of hydrocele. The patient was referred to us to rule out any lower limb lymphatic obstruction as the patient is from an endemic area. Tc Sulfur colloid (filtered) lymphoscintigraphy showed abnormal

Evaluation of preoperative lymphoscintigraphy and sentinel node procedure in vulvar cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of preoperative lymphoscintigraphy, and to evaluate the validity and feasibility of the sentinel node (SN) procedure in vulvar carcinoma. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective clinical and histopathological review of 77 patients with invasive squamous cell carcinoma in vulva who were treated at Karolinska University Hospital Stockholm, Sweden, from 2000 to 2007. The patients underwent SN mapping preoperatively with radioactive tracer and blue dye (n=60) or only blue dye (n=17). The SN was removed separately followed by complete inguinofemoral lymphadenectomy. RESULTS: Th

[Use of intraoperative lymphoscintigraphy in doubtful cases of sentinel node detection].

Lymphoscintigraphy is a widely accepted method used to detect selectively the sentinel node in malignant melanoma. This is the case report of a patient who was operated on for an inguinal melanoma and who was referred to the Nuclear Medicine Section for preoperative lymphoscintigraphy. There were technical problems for sentinel node detection due to the proximity of injection points. We aimed to know the possibility to perform an intraoperative lymphoscintigraphy as a valid and useful technique in cases as this one.

Sentinel node localization by lymphoscintigraphy: a reliable technique with widespread applications.

The concept of the sentinel lymph node (SN) represents an important contribution to guide appropriate surgery of cancer. Diagnostic non-invasive or minimally invasive procedures that provide accurate preoperative staging of the lymph node status are badly needed. The technique of SN biopsy, first developed with the purpose to select melanoma patients for regional node dissection, has been extended to other malignancies. Initial studies in breast carcinoma, conducted with vital blue dye, showed that the SN concept was biologically valid, although SN was missed in up to 30%-40% of cases. If a ra

Outlining the body contours with scattered photons in lymphoscintigraphy for sentinel nodes.

Although lymphoscintigraphy is a useful method of detecting the sentinel nodes of malignancy, conventional lymphoscintigraphy images only the sentinel nodes without revealing their anatomical location. We, therefore, used scattered photons to attempt to outline the body contours of patients with either breast or esophageal cancer. Lymphoscintigraphy was performed 3 to 4 hours after the injection of 111 MBq of 99mTc tin colloid into the peritumoral region. Images were obtained with dual-energy windows of 130 to 150 keV for the primary photons and 70 to 110 keV for the scattered photons. The ima

Lymphoscintigraphy and radioguided biopsy of the sentinel axillary node in breast cancer.

UNLABELLED: Lymphoscintigraphy associated with radioguided biopsy of the sentinel node (SN) is well established in clinical practice for melanoma. In breast cancer, the SN concept is similarly valid, and lymphoscintigraphy is a useful method for localizing the axillary SN. The aim of this study was to optimize the lymphoscintigraphy technique in association with a gamma ray detecting probe (GDP) for identifying and removing the SN in breast cancer patients. METHODS: Two-hundred fifty patients with operable breast tumor underwent lymphoscintigraphy before surgery. Three different size ranges o

[The value of breast lymphoscintigraphy in the definition of axillary staging in cancer of the breast].

Axillary lymphoscintigraphy (ALS) has been investigated in 51 patients with operable breast carcinoma between July 1982 and February 1984. Pre-operative intra-tumoral injection of 2.5 cm Ci of technetium 99 m antimony sulfide colloid has been performed before axillary dissection. We compared the scans produced by ALS with the results of pre-operative clinical examination of the axilla (UICC criterias) and to the histological status of the nodes surgically removed. We focused on the statistical methodology because, for us, most of the studies use inadequate tests. Axillary lymphoscintigraphy di

[The place of lymphoscintigraphy in the treatment of malignant melanoma of the skin (author's transl)].

Lymphoscintigraphy was performed pre- or postoperatively in 42 patients with malignant melanoma of the skin. The test consisted of the injection of 1.5-2.0 mCi 99mTc-labelled antimony sulphide colloid, both intracutaneously and subcutaneously, either around the primary tumour or along its edges or into the centre of the excision scar or contralaterally. The draining lymph-node groups were scanned with a gamma-camera 4-6 hours after the injection. Except for one patient, the radioactive tracer had always disappeared from the injection site and had accumulated in th regional lymph-nodes. In 11 o
