Serologic-based investigation of leptospirosis in a population of free-ranging eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) indicating the presence of Leptospira weilii serovar Topaz.

Eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) are one of the most abundant large macropodids sharing the landscape with humans. Despite this, little is known about the prevalence of Leptospira carriage within this species and the role that they may partake in the transmission of this disease in Australia. The sera of 87 free-ranging eastern grey kangaroos, captured in the Warragamba Catchment Area, Sydney, Australia, from June 2004 to November 2006, were screened against a reference panel of 22 Leptospira serovars using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Leptospiral antibodies were detect

Reproduction in male swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor): puberty and the effects of season.

This study describes pubertal changes in testes and epididymides and seasonal changes in the adult male reproductive organs and plasma androgen concentrations of the swamp wallaby (Wallabia bicolor). Pre-pubescent males had testes with solid seminiferous cords and spermatogenesis only to the stage of gonocytes. Their epididymides had empty lumina along their entire length. The testes of three males undergoing puberty had some lumen formation and mitotic activity. Their epididymides were similar in appearance to those of adult males but were entirely devoid of any cells within the lumen of the

Production and secretion of progesterone in vitro and presence of platelet activating factor (PAF) in early pregnancy of the marsupial, Macropus eugenii.

The corpus luteum (CL) of the tammar is suppressed by lactation. Removal of the sucking pouch young induces reactivation of the CL which produces a peak in plasma progesterone concentration on Day 5, 6 or 7; reactivation of the embryo after diapause precedes by one day this transient peak of progesterone. This study examines progesterone production and secretion in vitro by the CL and the production of platelet activating factor (PAF) by the endometrium during this stage of pregnancy (Days 0 and 3-8). Blood samples were collected twice daily to determine for each animal (n = 28) at autopsy the

A review of Triplotaenia undosa Beveridge, 1976 (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae) from macropodid marsupials, with the erection of T. macropodis sp. nov.

Molecular evidence (28S DNA) has suggested that Triplotaenia undosa from macropodid marsupials is a species complex. Additional data (cox 1) presented in this study confirmed the hypothesis and a morphological examination of all available specimens identified a new species, T. macropodis sp. nov., in the grey kangaroos Macropus fuliginosus and M. giganteus as well as the tammar wallaby, Notamacropus eugenii, and the red kangaroo, Osphranter rufus. The new species differs in the ratio of the number of testes to the number of female genital complexes. Specimens of T. undosa from the swamp wallab

TREATMENT OF MYCOTIC RHINOSINUSITIS IN A BENNETT'S WALLABY ( MACROPUS RUFOGRISEUS) USING TOPICAL VORICONAZOLE SUSPENDED IN A REVERSE THERMODYNAMIC PLURONIC GEL.

An approximately 4-yr-old female Bennett's wallaby ( Macropus rufogriseus) was evaluated for chronic left-sided facial swelling and nasal discharge. Computed tomography, endoscopy, biopsy, mycologic culture, and panfungal polymerase chain reaction were consistent with destructive mycotic rhinosinusitis. The patient's infection was treated with a long-term injectable antibiotic, oral antifungal therapy, and multiple intranasal infusions of voriconazole suspended in a reverse thermodynamic pluronic gel. This case represents the first documented case of mycotic rhinosinusitis in a macropod and un

Investigation into potential transmission sources of Giardia duodenalis in a threatened marsupial (Petrogale penicillata).

Assemblages of the protozoan parasite Giardia duodenalis common in humans and domestic species are increasingly identified in wildlife species, raising concern about the spill-over of pathogens from humans and domestic animals into wildlife. Here, the identity and prevalence of G. duodenalis in populations of a threatened marsupial, the brush-tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata), was investigated. Identification of G. duodenalis isolates, across three loci (18S rRNA, β-giardin and gdh), from rock-wallaby fecal samples (n = 318) identified an overall detection rate of 6.3%. No significan

Development of the penis and clitoris in the tammar wallaby, Macropus eugenii.

The development of the phallus from the indifferent stage to sexual dimorphism has not been described in any marsupial. This study describes the morphological and histological changes occurring in the development of the phallus of the tammar wallaby. The development of the penis and clitoris in the tammar closely follow the most widely accepted model for the development of the same organs in eutherian mammals. The urogenital plate that is present in both sexes at birth hollows out to form a urogenital groove at approximately 70 days postpartum (p.p.). There is then greater growth of the phallu

Geometry of the projection of the visual field onto the superior colliculus of the wallaby (Macropus eugenii). II. Stability of the projection after prolonged rearing with rotational squint.

At about the time of eye opening, one eye of seven tammar wallaby pouch young was surgically rotated about the optic axis by approximately 90 degrees. In adulthood the projection of the visual field through the rotated eye onto the contralateral superior colliculus was mapped electrophysiologically. Although apparently distorted, the projection could be coherently re-rotated mathematically to a reasonable copy of the normal projection from the opposite eye of the same animal, including details such as regional variations of the magnification factor. The same was true of three adult animals in

Mycobacterium avium complex in captive swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor): a case series highlighting liver, lymphoid and bone predilection.

Six captive adult swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), aged between 2 and 11 years, including five females and a single male, presented with non-specific clinical signs including lethargy and loss of body condition, ultimately leading to their euthanasia. Ante-mortem haematology and biochemistry identified anaemia in two cases and increased blood urea nitrogen in one case. Ante-mortem radiography identified multiple, variably mineralized visceral nodules in the liver of two animals and lytic lesions of the right scapula in one case and the right femoral neck in another. Post-mortem examination

Absence of Coxiella burnetii in kangaroo ticks (Amblyomma triguttatum) from a high seroprevalence population of eastern grey kangaroos.

Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is an important zoonotic and public health concern worldwide. Kangaroos are thought to be a likely wildlife reservoir for C. burnetii in Australia and the kangaroo tick (Amblyomma triguttatum) has often been considered a vector. In this descriptive study of ticks collected from a population of eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) with a high serological (84 %) and molecular (65 %) prevalence of C. burnetii in northern New South Wales, a total of 72 A. triguttatum ticks were tested by PCRs targeting the IS1111, htpAB, and com1 genes of the Coxiella g

Characteristics of kangaroo-related motor vehicle crashes.

BACKGROUND: Kangaroo-related motor vehicle collisions are common but there is limited literature on this topic. Drivers confronted by kangaroos may choose to swerve or to directly collide with the kangaroo. The effect of these differing crash mechanisms, along with the effect of vehicle type or time of day, has not yet been reported. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed, examining patients admitted to our tertiary trauma centre for kangaroo-related motor vehicle collisions between 2000 and 2020. Data on patient demographics, crash characteristics, and hospital stay were collect

Bilateral radial and ulnar fractures in a red kangaroo (Macropus rufus).

CASE DESCRIPTION: An 11-month-old sexually intact male red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) was examined because of bilateral radial and ulnar fractures. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Radiography of the forelimbs revealed bilateral, short oblique fractures in the proximal to mid diaphyses of the radii and ulnae. Fractures were overriding and moderately displaced. Wider than expected gaps were evident in the humeroulnar and humeroradial joints bilaterally. Although several physes remained open, no proximal radial physis was radiographically evident. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Dual bone fixation was performed bilat

Ectoparasitic dermatitis in free-ranging swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor) in New South Wales.

We report extensive dermatological lesions in three, free-ranging, adult, male swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor), presented to Taronga Western Plains Zoo wildlife hospital. All three animals were moderately infested with the louse species Heterodoxus ualabati, and two were concurrently infested with a previously undescribed sarcoptiform mite of the genus Diabolicoptes. Histological changes included moderate to marked compact hyperkeratosis, focal deep pyoderma and superficial dermatophytosis. Mild to moderate hyperplastic perivascular and periadnexal dermatitis with marked superficial and fol

Modulation of proximal muscle function during level versus incline hopping in tammar wallabies (Macropus eugenii).

We examined the functional role of two major proximal leg extensor muscles of tammar wallabies during level and inclined hopping (12 degrees, 21.3% grade). Previous in vivo studies of hopping wallabies have revealed that, unlike certain avian bipeds, distal hindlimb muscles do not alter their force-length behavior to contribute positive work during incline hopping. This suggests that proximal muscles produce the increased mechanical work associated with moving up an incline. Based on relative size and architectural anatomy, we hypothesized that the biceps femoris (BF), primarily a hip extensor

Hosts of the exotic ornate kangaroo tick, Amblyomma triguttatum triguttatum Koch, on southern Yorke Peninsula, South Australia.

Amblyomma triguttatum triguttatum is assumed to be endemic to south-western Western Australia (including Barrow Island), Queensland (excluding Cape York Peninsula), and New South Wales, south to Dubbo and Barham. The species has been recorded on a range of mammalian hosts including macropods and domestic animals. In Queensland, A. triguttatum triguttatum is implicated in the epidemiology of Q fever. In 2000, the species was detected on southern Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. We aimed to identify A. triguttatum triguttatum's hosts through trapping, sampling of carcasses, and opportunistic

Fluorosis as a probable cause of chronic lameness in free ranging eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus).

A population of eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) inhabiting heathland and farmland surrounding an aluminum smelter at Portland, Victoria, Australia, exhibited clinical signs of lameness. An investigation was undertaken to determine the cause of this lameness. Hematology, necropsy, histopathology, fecal egg count, total worm count, reproductive status, and the population age range were examined and failed to reveal any additional underlying disease state. The specific problem of lameness was addressed with bone histopathology, radiography, quantitative ultrasonography, microradiograp

Hypothermia and hypoxia inhibit the Hering-Breüer reflex in the marsupial newborn.

The effects of lowering body temperature (T(b)) on metabolic rate, ventilation, and the strength of the Hering-Breüer expiratory promoting reflex (HB reflex; determined from an inhibitory ratio calculated from volumetric measurements of the respiratory rhythm) were examined in 18-day-old ectothermic pouch young of the tammar wallaby during normoxia or hypoxia (10% O(2)). Hypoxia and hypothermia, either singularly or combined, depressed metabolic rate. At all T(b), the hypoxic hyperventilation was associated with a significant hyperpnea. At pouch T(b) (36.5 degrees C) during normoxia, inflation

Effects of fetectomy on oxytocin receptors in the myometrium of the tammar wallaby.

Mesotocin, an oxytocin-like peptide, stimulates uterine contractions during marsupial parturition. Female marsupials have two separate uteri, and in monovular species, the uterus with the conceptus is gravid, whereas the contralateral uterus is nongravid. Marsupials are unique because systemic and feto-placental factors in the regulation of uterine function can be differentiated. In pregnant tammar wallabies, a marked increase in myometrial mesotocin receptors (MTRs) occurs on Day 23 of the 26-day gestation, but only in the gravid uterus. The objective of this study was to investigate the effe

Chromosome aberration types in cells irradiated in G1 with nutrient depletion.

When cultured JU56 cells were blocked in G1 by nutrient depletion, irradiated and then subcultured, a subpopulation of cells at the next metaphase contained not only chromosome-type aberrations, but also triradials and chromatid exchanges. The triradials were found to be the result of chromosome-type breaks in three chromosomes, followed by exchange of chromatids. Obviously, chromatid exchanges and dicentrics could arise by the same mechanism. Triradials and chromatid exchanges were not found in cells irradiated in G1 without nutrient depletion. It appears, therefore, that nutrient depletion c
