Peer problems of 9- to 11-year-old children with hemiplegia in mainstream schools. Can these be predicted?

Is it possible to predict relatively early in the life of children with disabilities those who are likely to develop peer problems if they get no extra help? This question is examined in our prospective study of a representative sample of children with hemiplegia attending mainstream schools. Hemiplegia is a particularly suitable model for studying integration as it is a relatively homogeneous condition that does not usually preclude mainstream placement. Our aim was to investigate whether the excess of peer problems could be predicted from information obtained some 4 years earlier. A represen

Background and educational characteristics of prelingually deaf children implanted by five years of age.

PURPOSE: This study documents child, family and educational characteristics of a large representative sample of 8- to 9-yr-old prelingually deaf children who received a cochlear implant by 5 yr of age. Because pre-existing factors such as the child's gender, family characteristics, additional handicaps, age at onset of deafness and at implant, may affect postimplant outcomes, these variables must be accounted for before the impact of educational factors on performance with an implant can be adequately determined. Classroom variables that may affect postimplant outcomes include placement in pub

Intermittent catheterisation in school: a collaborative agreement.

Enabling children with medical needs to attend mainstream education can be a challenge for parents, teachers and health-care professionals. A lack of national standards on the management of continence in schools results in enormous variations in practice. This paper describes a collaborative approach to address the issues in schools in Manchester.

A challenging little balance: How white doulas with mainstream training understand and engage with anti-oppressive practice.

Though the benefits of doula care in reducing birth inequities and mitigating obstetric violence are well established, little is known about how White doulas from mainstream training programs (most doulas in Canada) understand and implement anti-oppressive practice (AOP) in different sociocultural contexts. Guided by interpretative phenomenological analysis, we conducted life history and semi-structured interviews with five White doulas working in Western Canada. The doulas described varying levels of engagement, confidence, and effectiveness across three distinct levels of sociopolitical inte

Teachers' perceptions of Restricted and Repetitive Behaviours (RRBs) in children with ASD: Attributions, confidence and emotional response.

BACKGROUND: Restricted and Repetitive Behaviours (RRBs) are some of the most difficult behaviours to manage in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Although RRBs frequently occur in educational settings, we know little about the way in which teachers understand these behaviours. AIMS: The study aimed to explore the attributions, emotional response and feelings of confidence held by teachers working in different educational settings when faced with RRBs. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A single group survey design using behavioural vignettes was adopted in order to elicit teacher beliefs an

Analysis of the "Learning in Regular Classrooms" movement in China.

The Learning in Regular Classrooms experiment has evolved in response to China's efforts to educate its large population of students with disabilities who, until the mid-1980s, were denied a free education. In the Learning in Regular Classrooms, students with disabilities (primarily sensory impairments or mild mental retardation) are educated in neighborhood schools in mainstream classrooms. Despite difficulties associated with developing effective inclusive programming, this approach has contributed to a major increase in the enrollment of students with disabilities and increased involvement

Navigating the Zimbabwean high school curriculum with assistive technology: Facilitators and barriers for learners with blindness.

Globally, learners with blindness face barriers to equitable curriculum access in mainstream education despite inclusion commitments. Zimbabwean mainstream high schools reflect these challenges, where learners with blindness encounter persistent obstacles to full participation. Centered on assistive technology, this study used criterion-based purposive sampling to recruit six self-selecting learners through resource units in three high schools across provinces, ensuring diverse perspectives. Grounded in Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the study examined facilitators and barriers

Genomic sequencing technologies for rare disease in mainstream healthcare: the current state of implementation.

Genomic sequencing technologies, which include both exome and genome sequencing, as well as panels or targeted analyses using genome-wide approaches, are being implemented across healthcare. Implementation, however, varies greatly by application and jurisdiction, with a diversity of approaches being employed around the world. This review aims to summarise the current state of implementation of genomic testing in mainstream healthcare for the detection of rare disease throughout the lifespan. Through a discussion of evidence gathered to date, highlighting exemplar studies, the following applica

Adolescent Vaccines: Current Recommendations and Techniques to Improve Vaccination Rates.

With multiple vaccines for adolescents recommended, it is imperative providers remain up to date with the current recommendations. With misinformation of vaccine safety and effectiveness in the mainstream media and social media, adolescents are a vulnerable population that needs to be reviewed and educated. Adolescents are typically only just starting to take ownership of their health care. Consequently, they may represent a more vulnerable population in need of education. This article reviews the current guidelines, recommended vaccinations and schedules, and methods to improve compliance rat

The development of a core key word signing vocabulary (Lámh) to facilitate communication with children with down syndrome in the first year of mainstream primary school in Ireland.

Key word signing, an unaided augmentative, and alternative communication (AAC) system is commonly used by children with Down syndrome who attend mainstream primary schools. To ensure the successful use of key word signing within a mainstream environment, a meaningful, contextually appropriate sign vocabulary must be available to all communication partners. The aim of this study was to develop a core school-based key word signing vocabulary to facilitate effective communication between children with Down syndrome and their communication partners in the first year of mainstream primary school. Sociocultural and Academic Considerations for School-Age d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Multilingual Learners: A Case Study of a Deaf Latina.

For decades , research has focused on American Sign Language/English bilingual education for d/Deaf and hard of hearing students whose families used English or ASL. However, a growing population of d/Dhh children come from households where languages other than English (e.g., Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese) are used. In a longitudinal case study, the authors document the K-12 educational pathway of a deaf Latina student. Anecdotal records, semistructured interviews, assessment data, and document reviews of the participant's school and clinical records are used to develop the case study. The findi

Professional Issues in the Interpreted Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students.

Through in-depth interviews, this qualitative study explored the perceptions of seven teachers of students who are d/Deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) regarding inclusive and interpreted education. The findings revealed central themes of concern including inadequate support in inclusive placements, communication modality mismatches, and insufficient quality of interpreted education. The teachers' experiences underscore the need for more comprehensive educational support systems and the development of robust support mechanisms to effectively navigate the challenges of inclusive placements for stu

Indonesian teachers' epistemological beliefs and inclusive education.

A growing number of children with intellectual disabilities attend inclusive schools in Indonesia. Previous research has suggested that teachers' type of school and experience influences their beliefs about inclusive education. This research collected questionnaire data from 267 Indonesian teachers and compared the responses from those working in inclusive, special and regular schools regarding their epistemological and pedagogical beliefs. The results showed that teachers in inclusive schools expressed stronger social constructivist beliefs than those in other schools. However, it was teacher

Making the nursing curriculum more inclusive for students with specific learning difficulties (SpLD): embedding specialist study skills into a core module.

BACKGROUND: Wray et al. (2012) found that providing specialist 'add on' study skills sessions to students with SpLD increased the likelihood of progression and earlier identification. However, 48% of students identified as 'at risk' of having a SpLD did not pursue further assessment/support, which is of concern. OBJECTIVES/DESIGN/PARTICIPANTS/SETTINGS: The study aimed to explore the impact of embedding nine study skills sessions designed for students with SpLD into the mainstream curriculum on pre-registration nursing students in one HEI in the north of England.
