Malakoplakia mimicking malignant rectal carcinoma with bone erosion in a SLE patient: diagnosis insights from a case report and literature review.

Malakoplakia, an uncommon granulomatous inflammatory disease, is frequently associated with impaired immune function in adults, and its occurrence in patients with systemic autoimmune diseases such as SLE has not been widely studied. The variable clinical manifestations and sometimes non - specific radiological findings of malakoplakia can be misleading, thereby posing a challenge for diagnosis. We report a case of colon and bone malakoplakia mimicking malignant colonic carcinoma in an 18-year-old male with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This case illustrates the diagnostic challenges ass

Successful treatment of malakoplakia of the liver and skin in a pediatric liver transplant patient.

BACKGROUND: Malakoplakia occurs uncommonly at any age, but pediatric reports are exceptionally limited. Malakoplakia appears primarily in the urinary tract, although involvement of essentially all organs has been reported, cutaneous malakoplakia is very uncommon and liver involvement is the rarest. METHOD: We report the first pediatric case of concurrent hepatic and cutaneous malakoplakia in a pediatric liver transplant recipient. We also provide a literature review for cutaneous malakoplakia cases in children. RESULT: A 16-year-old male received a deceased-donor liver transplant for autoimm

Presacral malakoplakia presenting as foot drop: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Malakoplakia is a rare condition characterized by inflammatory masses with specific histological characteristics. These soft tissue masses can mimic tumors and tend to develop in association with chronic or recurrent infections, typically of the urinary tract. A specific defect in innate immunity has been described. In the absence of randomized controlled trials, management is based on an understanding of the biology and on case reports. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we describe a case of presacral malakoplakia in a British Indian woman in her late 30s, presenting with complex unilatera

Microlithiasis of the epididymis and the rete testis.

Testicular microlithiasis is a well-defined clinical and pathologic entity easily diagnosed through testicular echography; however, its asso … frequently found. A granulomatous reaction around the interstitial epididymal microliths, mimicking malacoplakia, was observed in 1 case. The differential diagnosis of microliths includes corpora amilacea, Michaelis-Gutmann bodies, calcium deposits, hyaline globules, and parasites, like the giant kidney worm Dioctophyme renale. In infants and young adults, mic …

Multisystemic Malakoplakia Revealed by 18 F-FDG PET/CT: A Case of Concomitant Bilateral Osteomyelitis and Genitourinary Involvement.

We present the case of a 43-year-old man with a history of myasthenia gravis on immunosuppressive therapy, mycophenolate mofetil, and recent hospitalization for prostatic abscess and recurrent left orchiepididymitis. 18 F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated increased uptake in multiple intramedullary bone regions in the lower limbs, in the left testicle, in the prostate and in several retroperitoneal lymph nodes, all presenting with calcifications on CT. Based on PET/CT, prostate biopsy and bone bacterial cultures, a diagnosis of prostatic malakoplakia with concomitant testicular and lymph nodes involveme

Clinical Evaluation and Surgical Management of Ocular Malakoplakia of the Caruncle and Periorbital Region: A Report of Two Case and Literature Review.

Ocular malakoplakia, a rare inflammatory disorder characterized by Michaelis-Gutmann bodies, is presented in 2 unique cases involving uncommon anatomical sites-the orbit and caruncle. The first case describes a 10-year-old girl with localized subconjunctival swelling near the caruncle, prompting surgical excision, and revealing characteristic malakoplakia features. Despite medical management, surgical intervention provided symptom relief. The second case involves a painless swelling below the lower lid in a 23-year-old female, initially suggestive of lymphoma. Excision biopsy confirmed malakop

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of bilateral renal malakoplakia.

Isolated bilateral renal malakoplakia in the absence of concomitant involvement of the urinary tract is a rare occurrence. We report imaging, cytologic, and histologic findings of such a case diagnosed initially by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology. A 26-yr-old female presented with pain in the left flank, fever, anorexia, and weight loss for the past 2 mo. A left lumbar lump was palpable on physical examination. Imaging studies showed an enlarged nonfunctioning left kidney and a small lesion in the right kidney with preserved function. FNA from both kidneys yielded purulent material posit

[Malakoplakia].

Malakoplakia is a fairly rare disease, normally found in women (four out of every five cases). It mainly attacks the urinary system, but may spread to the other viscera. The symptoms are not clinically specific. The main interest of the disease is its pathogenesis, from which its treatment is derived. It is in fact an immunological dysfunction of the phagocytes, leading to chemical disorders in the macrophages. Its treatment is based on the use of cholinergic agonists and vitamin C therapy.

Bifocal malakoplakia in a patient living with HIV: case report.

BACKGROUND: Malakoplakia is a rare chronic granulomatous disease characterized by the presence of Michaelis-Gutmann bodies (MGBs) within histiocytic aggregates. It predominantly affects immunocompromised individuals, including those living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). CASE PRESENTATION: We present a unique case of bifocal malakoplakia in a 49-year-old man, previously with Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and HIV positive, presented with respiratory symptoms, weight loss, and lymphadenopathy. He had various infections including Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM), Cytomegalovirus

Cutaneous malakoplakia masquerading as pyoderma gangrenosum.

Cutaneous malakoplakia is a rare infection-related granulomatous disease frequently associated with immunocompromised states. Foamy macrophages containing basophilic granules, called the Michaelis-Gutman bodies, are pathognomonic. We report a case of cutaneous malakoplakia in a 77-year-old male with pyoderma gangrenosum and a 2-year history of a non-healing malleolar ulcer treated successfully with cotrimoxazole.

Malakoplakia outside the urinary tract.

CONTEXT: Malakoplakia is a rare granulomatous disease that occurs commonly in the urinary tract. Histologically, it is defined by sheets of histiocytes (Hansemann cells) with accumulation of granular basophilic periodic acid-Schiff-positive, diastase-resistant inclusions and calcified Michaelis-Gutmann bodies, which are pathognomonic but not necessary for diagnosis. In addition to the urinary tract, malakoplakia has been reported in other organs, including the gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system, female genital tract, and the tongue. OBJECTIVES: To review the literature of reported

Malakoplakia of the appendix. An unusual association with eggs of Taenia species.

Malakoplakia of the appendix is an unusual condition that has been reported to occur in association with tumors, infections, and immunocompromised states. We describe a case of appendicular malakoplakia associated with eggs of Taenia species. The diagnosis was made on histopathologic examination of surgically resected tissue from an appendicular mass. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that helminths have been documented to be associated with malakoplakia. We also discuss the implications of helminthic infestation in the pathogenesis of the lesion.

Beyond ureterolithiasis: gamut of abnormalities affecting the ureter.

Nephrolithiasis is the most common condition involving the ureters. However, various other entities can affect the ureters, albeit less freq … he ureters, including ureteral hemorrhage, ureteral intussusception, ureteral pseudodiverticulosis, Malacoplakia, and ureteritis cystica. Knowledge of these entities and their characteristic imaging manifestations along with patient's clinical presentation allows accurate diagnosis and timely patient management.
