Women's health in urban Mali: social predictors and health itineraries.

Social and marital factors may influence women's health outcomes. This is of particular relevance in sub-Saharan Africa, where women's health indicators lag behind the rest of the world. Our study examines the impact of social mediators of women's health during key events (pregnancy and illness) in urban Mali. In this cross-sectional study, we interviewed 324 women aged 15-80, living in Bamako, the capital city, in 1999. We used mixed quantitative and qualitative methods to obtain detailed histories of pregnancy and illness during specific time periods preceding the survey. We examined the rol…

Urinary tract morbidity due to Schistosoma haematobium infection in Mali.

A total of 824 Malian villagers in a region endemic for Schistosoma (S.) haematobium were examined clinically, parasitologically and by abdominal ultrasound. Systematic schistosomicidal treatment had never been applied to this population. Prevalence of S. haematobium infection ranged from 77% in adolescents to 51% in adults older than 40 years. Intensity of infection was generally mild, 91% of all patients excreting less than 100 ova/10 ml urine. Bladder wall enlargement and irregularities, bladder masses, pseudopolyps and dilation of the upper urinary tract were found ultrasonographically in …

Outbreak of schistosomiasis among travelers returning from Mali, West Africa.

Schistosomiasis in travelers often remains unrecognized because doctors are unfamiliar with the clinical presentation and diagnosis of this imported disease. We describe the epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory characteristics associated with an outbreak of schistosomiasis among nonimmune travelers. Of 30 travelers in two consecutive groups, 29 who had swum in freshwater pools in the Dogon area of Mali, West Africa, were followed for 12 months. Twenty-eight (97%) of those 29 became infected; 10 (36%) of the 28 had cercarial dermatitis, and in 15 (54%), Katayama fever developed. Eggs were …

Hereditary spastic paraplegia type 35 in a family from Mali.

Variants in FA2H have been associated with a wide range of phenotypes including hereditary spastic paraplegia type 35 (SPG35); however, genetically confirmed cases have not been reported in Africa. We report here the first African family with a variant in the FA2H gene causing SPG35. Four affected siblings with consanguineous parents presented with walking difficulty at age 2-3 and progressive limb weakness. They became wheelchair-bound 2 years after disease onset. Neurological examination confirmed lower greater than upper limb weakness and atrophy, brisk reflexes throughout, and spasticity w

Lassa Virus Seroprevalence in Sibirilia Commune, Bougouni District, Southern Mali.

Lassa virus (LASV) is endemic to several nations in West Africa. In Mali, LASV was unknown until an exported case of Lassa fever was reported in 2009. Since that time, rodent surveys have found evidence of LASV-infected Mastomys natalensis rats in several communities in southern Mali, near the border with Côte d'Ivoire. Despite increased awareness, to date only a single case of Lassa fever has been confirmed in Mali. We conducted a survey to determine the prevalence of LASV exposure among persons in 3 villages in southern Mali where the presence of infected rodents has been documented. LASV Ig…

Factors associated with dog rabies immunisation status in Bamako, Mali.

We conducted a cross-sectional survey in Bamako, Mali, to determine for the first time the seroprevalence of rabies virus antibodies in the dog population and people's knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) towards the disease and its control. Antibody detection was done with the fluorescent antibody virus neutralisation (FAVN) test, with a positivity threshold of 0.25IU/ml. We visited 2956 households in 2010 and 2011 and found 379 dogs in 279 households. Data were collected on 279 dog-owning households, on 1017 non-dog-owning households and on 311 dogs. A serum or plasma sample was collecte…

Genomic characterization of enteroaggregative Escherichia coli from children in Mali.

BACKGROUND: Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) is a cause of epidemic and sporadic diarrhea, yet its role as an enteric pathogen is not fully understood. METHODS: We characterized 121 EAEC strains isolated in 2008 as part of a case-control study of moderate to severe acute diarrhea among children 0-59 months of age in Bamako, Mali. We applied multiplex polymerase chain reaction and comparative genome hybridization to identify potential virulence factors among the EAEC strains, coupled with classification and regression tree modeling to reveal combinations of factors most strongly assoc…

[Community-based intervention to reduce birth asphyxia mortality in Mali].

Approximately one million newborn babies die every year as a result of birth asphyxia in developing countries. The objectives of this study are to develop the management of birth asphyxia and to establish a community-based surveillance system of vital events in rural areas of Oueléssébougou, Mali. Traditional birth attendants, female leaders of village associations and village health workers were trained to carry out communication activities designed to change behaviours in the management of birth asphyxia. The study has improved health facility-based delivery (from 80 to 93%) and the identifi…

The National Schistosomiasis Control Programme in Mali, objectives, organization, results.

Schistosomiasis control started regionally, in the Bandiagara district, and as a component of a dam-building project in 1978. In 1982 a national programme was created. Control was divided into three phases: Preparation, intervention and maintenance. Districts qualifyed for schistosomiasis control activities, when the prevalence for either Schistosoma haematobium or Schistosoma mansoni exceeded 20% and/or the prevalence of persons with intensive infections for either parasite exceeded 5%. Intensive infection was defined as the excretion of more than 50 eggs per 10 ml of urine or the excretion o

A Preliminary Study of the Response of Microcyclosporella mali to Selected Essential Oils.

In Poland, the main causal agent of sooty blotch and flyspeck disease is the fungus Microcyclosporella mali J.Frank, Schroers et Crous, which is most commonly isolated from the spots found on apples. The aim of the paper was to study the effects of essential oils extracted from Greek oregano, thyme and costmary on M. mali. Analysis of the essential oils was conducted using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with a flame ionization detector (FID). The Greek oregano essential oil was classified to the carvacrol chemotype, while the thyme and costmary were classified to the thymol and t…

Orthopoxvirus Seroprevalence and Infection Susceptibility in France, Bolivia, Laos, and Mali.

To determine a demographic overview of orthopoxvirus seroprevalence, we tested blood samples collected during 2003-2019 from France (n = 4,876), Bolivia (n = 601), Laos (n = 657), and Mali (n = 255) for neutralizing antibodies against vaccinia virus. In addition, we tested 4,448 of the 4,876 samples from France for neutralizing antibodies against cowpox virus. We confirmed extensive cross-immunity between the 2 viruses. Seroprevalence of antibodies was <1% in Bolivia, <5% in Laos, and 17.25% in Mali. In France, we found low prevalence of neutralizing antibodies in persons who were unvaccinated…

Monitoring of the Sensitivity In Vivo of Plasmodium falciparum to Artemether-Lumefantrine in Mali.

In Mali, since 2007, artemether-lumefantrine has been the first choice against uncomplicated malaria. Despite its effectiveness, a rapid selection of markers of resistance to partner drugs has been documented. This work evaluated the treatment according to the World Health Organization's standard 28-day treatment method. The primary endpoint was the clinical and parasitological response corrected by a polymerase chain reaction. It was more than 99.9 percent, the proportion of patients with anemia significantly decrease compared to baseline (p < 0.001), and no serious events were recorded. Plas…
