A study of correlation of cheiloscopy, fingerprint patterns and palatoscopy in skeletal malocclusions.

OBJECTIVE: For early diagnosis of malocclusion various methods such as lip prints, fingerprints and palatal rugae have been studied in the past, however, this study was unique in that it takes into consideration three factors i.e., lip prints, fingerprints and palatal rugae simultaneously to correlate with malocclusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 105 participants were equally divided as class I, class II and class III malocclusion based on ANB angle, Beta angle and Wits appraisal. The lip prints were recorded using lipstick cellophane method and were examined by Suzuki and Tsuchihashi method. For

Prevalence of malocclusion and need for early orthodontic treatment in children.

BACKGROUND: With the advent of functional appliances and orthopedic appliances the elimination and correction of skeletal and dental discrepancies has been much reduced. Most orthodontists agree that elimination of oral habits and orthopaedic treatment of class 3 malocclusion and posterior cross bites deserve treatment at an early age. Early treatment was proposed along the lines of "catch them in the young", and "you see it, you treat it" is the main ideology of Early Orthodonticc Treatment (EOT). Furthermore, the majority of children have habits driving the malocclusion. Mouth breathing, ton

Long-term Stability of Extraction Therapy in Anterior Open Bite. A Case Report.

The following cases describe three sisters with anterior open bite (overbite between 0 and -4.5 mm) coinciding with vertical growth pattern. All patients showed tongue thrusting and tongue-tip protrusion. They underwent functional appliance and fixed straight-wire appliance therapy primarily. Bite closure was effected by premolar extraction. Orthodontic treatment was supported by speech therapy. All cases resulted in a stable Class I molar relationship with an overbite of 2 mm. The results remained stable 6-8 years after the end of treatment. Speech and tongue function were physiological.

Assessment of Severity of Malocclusion and Orthodontic Treatment Need Using the Dental Esthetic Index and Angle's Classification: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Angle's classification is the most widely used instrument for evaluation of malocclusion. The dental esthetic index (DAI) is a reliable, valid, and universally accepted cross-cultural index adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) that links objective, clinical, and subjective esthetic factors to produce a single score that reflects the severity and the treatment needs of the malocclusion. The present study aims to evaluate Angle's classification and DAI to assess the severity of malocclusion and treatment needs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional st

Atypical extraction in Class I malocclusion: A case report.

The treatment of Angle Class I malocclusion by atypical extraction is rather challenging. The extraction of four first premolars often manages it. However, in cases of compromised and non-restorable teeth, the extraction decision may be altered, making the anchorage and the treatment mechanics more challenging. This article reports the clinical case of a 16-year-old patient from Sudan who presented with a chief complaint "My teeth are crooked and sticking out." He had Angle Class I malocclusion with a bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion. He had severe crowding in both arches and localized mar

Prevalence and Awareness of Mucogingival Conditions and Deformities and Their Impact on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life Among Orthodontic Patients at a Tertiary Dental Care Center in Tamil Nadu, South India: A Questionnaire-Based Study.

Background Mucogingival conditions and deformities (MGCDs) are frequently encountered around malposed teeth and may predispose individuals to attachment loss during or after orthodontic treatment. Therefore, a comprehensive pre-orthodontic evaluation of mucogingival status is essential to prevent potential complications. Enhancing patient awareness can reduce anxiety related to mucogingival corrective procedures and improve treatment acceptance. Furthermore, malocclusion can substantially influence oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The aim of the present study was to assess the pre

Relationship between vertical facial patterns and palatal morphology in class I and class II malocclusion - An in vitro study.

The relationship between vertical facial growth patterns and palatal morphology in Class I and Class II malocclusion cases is explored. An in vitro analysis of 24 subjects (12 in each group) showed that individuals with Class II malocclusion and high-angle growth displayed significantly greater mandibular plane angles, facial heights, palatal widths, and arch lengths compared to their Class I counterparts. Data shows that vertical growth tendencies have a marked influence on palatal dimensions. Visual data representation further confirmed the distinctive morphological differences between the g
