Sexual abuse, alcohol and other drug use, and suicidal behaviors in homeless adolescents.

Previous research has shown that homeless youth have high rates of suicidal ideation, sexual abuse, and abuse of alcohol and other drugs. However, little is known about how these rates differ by gender and ethnicity. Our objective was to describe patterns of sexual abuse, alcohol and other drug use, and indicators of suicidal behaviors in homeless adolescents and to determine gender and ethnic differences in these factors. We used secondary data analysis of data from surveys completed by 96 homeless youth whose average age was 17.9 years. Over 60% of the sample reported a history of sexual abu

Prevalence of obesity among U.S. population with substance dependence.

AIM: To investigate associations between substance dependence and obesity. METHODS: Obesity (body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2) status and the status of dependence on heroin, stimulant, marijuana, nicotine and alcohol (past-month status for nicotine and past-year status for all others) were identified from the U.S. National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH, 2015-2017) datasets. SAS Surveylogistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratio (AOR) for the association between each substance dependence and obesity, adjusting for potentially confounding effects of sociodemographic factors and

Assessing cognitive functioning in individuals with cocaine use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: There have been mixed findings assessing the impact of regular cocaine use on cognitive functioning. This study employed a comprehensive cognitive battery to compare the performance of individuals diagnosed with a cocaine use disorder (N = 3 abusers, N = 17 dependent) against the performance of two control groups: (a) non-drug-users, and (b) marijuana users who report no cocaine use (N = 7 marijuana abusers, N = 0 dependent, N = 13 marijuana users with no Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth Edition, DSM-IV, diagnosis). METHOD: This one-session, between-p

San Diego Suicide Study. II. Substance abuse in young cases.

Fifty-three percent of 133 consecutive young suicides had a principal psychiatric diagnosis of substance abuse. Twenty-four percent had an additional principal diagnosis of atypical depression, atypical psychosis, or adjustment disorder with depression. The relationship of the substance abuse to the additional diagnosis was usually obscure, though this subgroup was similar to the group with only substance abuse on a number of factors. Typically, substance abuse was a chronic condition present for nine years. Multiple substance abuse was the norm in these cases, and marijuana, alcohol, and coca

Trajectories of marijuana use and psychological adjustment among urban African American and Puerto Rican women.

BACKGROUND: The current longitudinal study examined the developmental patterns of marijuana use and their relationship with subsequent psychological adjustment in a community-based sample of urban African American and Puerto Rican women. METHOD: Participants were interviewed five times over a period ranging from adolescence (mean age 14.0 years) to adulthood (mean age 32.5 years). Outcome measures included depressive symptoms, anger/hostility and the presence of a substance use disorder (abuse/dependence). RESULTS: Three distinct trajectories of marijuana use were identified: non-users, incr

Accuracy and replicability of identifying eyelid tremor as an indicator of recent cannabis smoking.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis intoxication may increase the risk of motor vehicle crashes. However, reliable methods of assessing cannabis intoxication are limited. The presence of eyelid tremors is among the signs of cannabis use identified under the Drug Evaluation and Classification Program of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Our objectives were to assess the accuracy and replicability of identifying eyelid tremor as an indicator of recent cannabis smoking using a blinded, controlled study design. METHODS: Adult subjects (N = 103) were recruited into three groups based on their

[Frequent non-medical cannabis use: health sequelae and effectiveness of detoxification treatment].

The non-medical (recreational) use of cannabis is common particularly among young adults. In light of the ongoing legalization debate the clinical impact of physical and psychosocial consequences of regular recreational cannabis consumption should be presented. Health consequences appear to be more pronounced the earlier the regular recreational cannabis use had been started in the individual's development. There is an increasing demand from recreational cannabis users for medical treatment of cannabis-related complaints including the cannabis withdrawal syndrome. Physical sequelae such as chr

Adolescents and cannabis in the 21st century: Current Problems in Pediatric and Adolescent Health Care.

The past 30 years in the United States have seen a shift towards increasing decriminalization and legalization of cannabis products. Despite the evolving legal landscape, adolescent cannabis use appears to have remained relatively stable, while use among young adults has increased. Cannabis-related emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and unintentional ingestions, particularly among young children, have all increased, with the availability of higher potency products such as concentrates and edibles likely playing a role. Cannabis intoxication should be suspected in youth presenting w

Stress system changes associated with marijuana dependence may increase craving for alcohol and cocaine.

OBJECTIVE: To date, little research exists defining bio-behavioral adaptations associated with both marijuana abuse and risk of craving and relapse to other drugs of abuse during early abstinence. METHOD: Fifty-nine treatment-seeking individuals dependent on alcohol and cocaine were recruited. Thirty of these individuals were also marijuana (MJ) dependent; 29 were not. Twenty-six socially drinking healthy controls were also recruited. All participants were exposed to three 5-min guided imagery conditions (stress, alcohol/cocaine cue and relaxing), presented randomly, one per day across three

Social Determinants of Substance Use in Black Adults with Criminal Justice Contact: Do Sex, Stressors, and Sleep Matter?

Substance use is a critical public health issue in the U.S., with Black communities, particularly those with criminal justice contact, disproportionately affected. Chronic exposure to stressors can lead to substance use as a coping strategy. This study used data from 1476 Black adults with criminal justice involvement from the National Survey of American Life to examine how psychosocial stress and sleep disturbances relate to lifetime substance use and to determine if there are any sex differences. Sex-separate generalized linear models for a Poisson distribution with a log-link function estim

[Future medications for tobacco and cannabis dependence].

Worldwide more than 3 million deaths a year are attributable to smoking, and tobacco use is on the rise in developing countries. Consequently, smoking is one of the few causes of mortality that is increasing, with deaths projected to reach 10 million annually in 30-40 years. Cannabinoids, which are usually used in the form of marijuana, have become the most frequently used illicit drugs, but there is no pharmacological treatment for marijuana dependence. Although the dopaminergic system plays a critical role in reinforcing the effects of drugs of abuse, other neurotransmitter systems are also

Adolescent drug abuse: problem and prospectus.

Available research indicates that adolescent alcohol and drug abuse is a multi-level phenomenon which seriously affects the functioning of the individual, his (her) interpersonal experiences, the school and society in terms of problem behaviour and other psychopathological and social dysfunctional correlates. Data of the prevalence and problems of abuse obtained by a survey of high school students indicate a high prevalence of alcohol and marijuana used combinationally and heavy users are likely to experience psychopathological consequences, including personal problems of identity diffusion, s

Illicit drugs in wastewater of the city of Zagreb (Croatia)--estimation of drug abuse in a transition country.

A comprehensive study of various psychoactive substances and their metabolites was performed in the wastewater treatment plant of the city of Zagreb (780 000 inhabitants) using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS). The estimation of drug abuse for five different illicit drugs, including heroin, cocaine, marijuana, amphetamine and ecstasy, was made on the basis of their representative excretion rates, which were determined over a period of 8 months. Marijuana (1000 kg/year), heroin (75 kg/year) and cocaine (47 kg/year) were found to be the most frequently consumed illicit d

Drug preferences of alcoholic polydrug abusers with and without panic.

Manifestations of anxiety, including panic disorder, are more common in the alcoholic population than in the general population. Alcoholics frequently abuse other drugs. The authors hypothesized that alcoholic subjects with panic attacks would abuse anxiolytic drugs more and panic-inducing drugs less frequently than nonanxious alcoholic subjects, and that their abuse of panic-inducing drugs would predate the age at panic onset. Findings indicate that alcoholic subjects with panic attacks (but not panic disorder) abused opiates and sedatives to a greater degree than nonanxious alcoholic subject

[Coronary thrombosis and cannabis abuse: a case report].

Marijuana consumption is growing up becoming very common especially between young people. 9-THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, acts on the endocannabinoid system having different cardiovascular effects, including arrhythmias, acute coronary syndrome, and sudden cardiac death. We present the case of a young man from Gambia with no cardiovascular risk factors, marijuana consumer, presenting to the emergency department with ST-elevation myocardial infarction. At coronary angiography, thrombotic left anterior descending coronary artery subocclusion was documented. We also describe th

Marijuana versus evidence-based treatments for sleep and relaxation: A cross-sectional study of use and dose modification following involuntary job loss.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep disruption and relaxation are commonly cited reasons for marijuana use. Job loss is a significant stressor associated with high risk for sleep disruption. Little is known about marijuana use in relation to other intervention choices for sleep/relaxation in individuals who have experienced recent, involuntary job loss. METHODS: This study compared self-reported use of marijuana to evidence-based treatments (EBT) for sleep/relaxation using data from the ongoing Assessing Daily Activity Patterns through Occupational Transitions (ADAPT) study. Substance-use Disorders, Opportunistic Infections, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Patients.

The excessive use of a drug that is harmful to the person as well as society at large is referred to as substance addiction or abuse. Some substances and risky and unsafe sexual behavior have been linked to an increased risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. These frequently used substances include tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, crack cocaine, and opiates. More than 50% of HIV patients were found to use alcohol, compared to 5-15% for cocaine.1 Marijuana, too, is prevalent in HIV patients. People with HIV smoke twice as much tobacco as the general population.1.
