Postoperative mucoceles of the maxillary sinus.

Apparently, the incidence of postoperative maxillary sinus mucoceles is greater in Japan than in the Western world. Between 1967 and 1976 at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, 132 patients had the diagnosis of mucoceles of the maxillary sinus. Of these patients, 131 (99%) had histories of previous maxillary sinus surgery. A number of etiologic mechanisms are probably involved in producing these mucoceles.

[Aspergillus mycetoma of the maxillary sinus].

The author describes a new case of aspergillosis in maxillary antrum, treated by surgery. A particularity of this case was an eosinophilia that disappeared after the treatment. Correlation with fungus infection was made probable by presence of a great amount of eosinophilic blood cells in hyperplastic mucosa involving the lesion. A review is made of literature.

Sinonasal chromoblastomycosis of the maxillary sinus.

A unique case of chromoblastomycosis, a chronic subcutaneous fungal infection, involving the maxillary sinus-a site rarely affected by this organism. The case highlights the diagnostic challenge posed by its non-specific clinical features, often mimicking chronic rhinosinusitis or neoplastic lesions. Histopathological examination revealed characteristic sclerotic (Medlar) bodies, confirming the diagnosis. Surgical debridement combined with prolonged antifungal therapy led to successful resolution. This report emphasises the importance of considering rare fungal aetiologies like chromoblastomyc

[Melanoma of the maxillary sinus mucosa].

The article presents an overview of the intermediate results of treatment for maxillary sinus melanoma in a 66-year-old patient. The importance of timely diagnosis and active surgical tactics for achieving the best survival results up to 5 years is noted. After further examination, the diagnosis was confirmed, the patient underwent genomic sequencing of the tumor tissue biopsy, which revealed a BRAF mutation. In this regard, adjuvant therapy was prescribed according to the dabrafenib+trametinib regimen. It was noted that this rare pathology requires careful study, monitoring of clinical outcom

[Surgical anatomy of the maxillary sinus].

BACKGROUND: Improved understanding of the microanatomy of the paranasal sinuses, including its individual variations, makes a substantial contribution to current progress in endonasal endoscopic microsurgery. Microanatomy of the sinuses is an active field of present scientific investitations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive review on microanatomy of the maxillary sinus is presented from the perspective of contemporary endonasal endoscopic microsurgery. RESULTS: The range of variation of the individual microanatomy of all sections of the maxillary sinus is presented, in particular to m

[Rare diseases of the maxillary sinus].

BACKGROUND: Silent sinus syndrome (SSS), organized hematoma (OH), and pneumosinus dilatans (PD) are rare, usually unilateral diseases of the maxillary sinus. Due to misinterpretation, excessive diagnostics and unnecessarily aggressive surgery or a delay in diagnostics and treatment are common. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to develop reasonable and comprehensible diagnostic criteria to improve diagnosis and treatment of these rare diseases. METHODS: In this retrospective study, all patients treated for SSS, OH, and PD from 2012 to 2019 were identified. Patient history, diagnosti

[Unilateral diseases of the maxillary sinus].

Unilateral diseases of the maxillary sinus are among the most common rhinologic diagnoses. The diversity of these diseases can represent a challenge for the treating physician. The spectrum ranges from harmless maxillary sinus cysts that seldom require treatment, to highly aggressive malignant tumors. Special attention should be given to the management of inverted papilloma. These benign tumors are characterized by high recurrence rates and the potential for malignant transformation. The key to minimizing recurrence is precise surgical intervention. Other unilateral maxillary sinus diseases su

Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma of the Maxillary Sinus.

The clinical course and pathologic features of a 72 year old female who presented with epistaxis are presented. Radiographic findings were notable for a large, soft tissue lesion filling the maxillary sinus with significant bony erosion and expansion. The patient was ultimately diagnosed with epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) and underwent endoscopic resection. She has no evidence of local, regional or distant recurrence 14 months post-surgery. The rarity of this neoplasm, the unusual anatomic location and non-specific symptoms present diagnostic and management challenges. Epithelioid vas

[On the methods for the probing of the maxillary sinus].

This publication is designed to familiarize practicing physicians and otorhinolaryngologists with the technique for the probing of the maxillary sinus. The authors propose to use a 9 cm long S-shaped cannula of original construction for the probing and rinsing the maxillary sinus. The technique of this procedure and anatomical landmarks that facilitate probing are illustrated in the figures. The probing of the maxillary sinus is performed as the main method for the treatment of acute sinusitis and exacerbation of chronic sinusitis. The application of forced drainage of natural pathways (FDNP)

[Solitary neurofibroma of the maxillary sinus].

Neurofibromas are benign tumours of peripheral nerve tissue, frequently associated with neurofibromatosis type I. Their isolated occurrence in the maxillary sinus is rare, with only 6 cases described in the literature. We present the case of a 70-year-old woman who consulted for left hemifacial paresthesias of 10 years' evolution. CT showed a heterogeneous lesion in the left maxillary sinus, eroding its lateral wall without signs of infiltration. Endoscopic surgery with nasalisation of the maxillary sinus was performed. The pathology was neurofibroma (positive for S-100 protein and vimentin).

The maxillary recess of the sphenoid sinus.

The most studied recess of the sphenoid sinus seems to be the lateral one, which is highly variable. Less attention seems to be paid to the maxillary recess, extending anterior, inferior and lateral towards the maxillary sinus. Twenty patients were referred for CT of the paranasal sinuses (axial CT), during a 3-month period. After examining the morphology of the sphenoid sinuses, the authors found bilateral maxillary recesses in one patient. On either side, the maxillary recess of the sphenoid sinus was directed anterior and lateral, being separated from the maxillary sinus by a distinctive bo

[Cholesterol granuloma of the maxillary sinus].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the etiology and pathogenesis of cholesterol granuloma of the maxillary sinus. METHOD: Five patients with cholesterol granuloma of the maxillary sinus were analysed retrospectively. RESULT: The cholesterol granuloma was a particular form of tissue reactions of granulation. The clinical symptoms of the disease was short of specificity. CONCLUSION: The pathogenesis of cholesterol granuloma includes hyperlipemia, obstruction of air filled cavity ventilation and impaired drainage. The final diagnosis was based on pathologic examination. The treatment should begin with

[Solitary neurofibroma of the maxillary sinus].

OBJECTIVE: To illustrate the rarity and difficulty diagnosing maxillary sinus neurofibroma through a case report. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 35-year-old female consulted our department for left cheek swelling evolving over 6 months, upper gum swelling, and a dental occlusion disorder. RESULTS: A computed tomography scan showed a tumor of the left maxillary sinus with bone destruction. Histological examination of a biopsy fragment found an in situ carcinoma. A maxillary resection was performed to excise the tumor. Histological examination of the specimen showed a neurofibroma. No sign of recurre
