Correlation of middle meatal and maxillary sinus cultures in acute maxillary sinusitis.

Cultures obtained from the middle meatus have been used frequently in the past to direct therapy in patients with acute maxillary sinusitis. However, no convincing data have been published to indicate that middle meatal cultures accurately represent the bacterial flora within the maxillary sinus. The hypothesis of this experiment is that bacteria obtained by directed middle meatal cultures qualitatively and quantitatively correlate with cultures taken by maxillary sinus puncture. Acute sinusitis was induced by injecting 10(8) colony-forming units of bacteria directly into the maxillary sinuses…

Reproducibility of volumetric measurements on maxillary sinuses.

Although computer assisted volumetric quantification of human maxillary sinuses is commonly used to measure volumetric changes during life, reliability data for this procedure are lacking. The objective of this retrospective study is to test a semi-automatic virtual volumetric analysis technique on 36 CT scans of human maxillary sinuses. Three examiners with different clinical experience performed all measurements in three replicates. As principle of proof, the technique was examined on 12 phantoms with known volumes. The validation of the method revealed that the mean relative error was 0.364

Intentional replantation for the management of maxillary sinusitis.

AIM: To present a case that emphasizes the importance of the use of intentional replantation as a technique to successfully treat a periapical lesion and an odontogenic maxillary sinusitis through the alveolus at the same time. SUMMARY: This case report presents a patient with odontogenic maxillary sinusitis secondary to periapical disease of a maxillary molar that had previously received root canal treatment. The molar was extracted, with drainage and rinsing of the maxillary sinus. The apices were resected extra-orally, the retrograde cavities prepared with ultrasound and retrograde filling…

[Use of echography in pathology of the maxillary sinuses].

Sonography has recently gained attention as a non-invasive technique improving the diagnostic accuracy of conventional radiology as regards the pathologic conditions of the maxillary sinus. Eighty-two patients with various pathologies of the maxillary sinus--i.e. acute/chronic sinusitis, mucocele, mucopyocele, polyp, and carcinoma--were submitted to US after preliminary conventional radiographs and before CT and surgical treatment (both performed in selected cases only). US proved useful in detecting liquid exudate, mucosal hypertrophy, and lesions of the anterior wall, while it was not as acc

Cholesterol granuloma of the maxillary and frontal sinuses.

5 cases of cholesterol granuloma are described, 3 within the maxillary sinuses and 2 within the frontal sinuses. The lesions arise from the mucosa and can be recognized on plain films and tomograms of the sinus as opacity, sometimes resembling a mucocele. Radical operation seems to give absolute cure without any recurrence. The pathogenesis is hemorrhage and/or filtration. The closed cavities of the paranasal sinuses provide favorable conditions for cholesterol to become dissociated from the lipoprotein complex and to precipitate and to give rise to a granulomatous reaction.

Chronic maxillary sinusitis masquerading as a maxillary sinus neoplasm: A case report.

Chronic inflammatory diseases of the maxillary sinus can present well-defined, expansile radiolucent features, necessitating differential diagnosis from true neoplasms. Pleomorphic adenoma, although rare, is one of the neoplasms included in the list of differential diagnoses, and it may occasionally arise in the maxillary sinus. However, inflammatory conditions such as mucoceles, postoperative maxillary cysts and chronic bacterial maxillary sinusitis can also cause thinning and expansion of the sinus walls due to prolonged obstruction. The present study describes a case of chronic maxillary si…

Evaluation of the microbiology of chronic maxillary sinusitis.

Chronic paranasal sinusitis is a disease that afflicts a significant percentage of the population and causes considerable long-term morbidity. With the common use of multiple courses of broad-spectrum oral antibiotics to treat this condition, there is a possibility of an alteration in the pathogens that promote a persistence of chronic sinusitis. One hundred seventy-four consecutive patients with a diagnosis of chronic maxillary sinusitis requiring an endoscopic surgical procedure were prospectively evaluated. At the time of surgery, cultures of mucopus in the maxillary sinus were aseptically …

Gaucher's disease involving the maxillary sinuses.

A 46-year-old man with a long history of Gaucher's disease involving the spleen, bone marrow, and multiple bones presented with apparent sinusitis. He had radiologic opacification and histologically documented involvement by Gaucher's disease of the maxillary antra. Bony involvement of the mandible and maxilla has rarely been reported. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first reported case of paranasal sinus involvement by Gaucher's disease.
