OBJECTIVE: To probe the possibility of trans-sutural distraction osteogenesis for correction of children midfacial hypoplasia.
METHODS: The trans-sutural distraction system of mid-facial skeleton consisted of the bone-borne traction hooks of titanium, the face-bow, and the elastic loops. Nine children with midfacial hypoplasia were treated at their 6 - 12 years of age. No osteotomy was made in them. Bone holes were drilled with a dental bur at each side of the lateral-inferior rim of the aperture, or at the anterior part of the hard palate. The traction device was hatched to the holes through

Binder syndrome (BS) or maxillo-nasal dysplasia is an uncommon developmental anomaly affecting primarily the anterior part of the maxilla and nasal complex. The characteristic findings are a failure of development in the premaxillary area with associated deformities of the nasal skeleton and the overlying soft tissues. Affected individuals typically have an unusually flat, underdeveloped midface (midfacial hypoplasia), with an abnormally short nose and flat nasal bridge, underdeveloped upper jaw, relatively protruding lower jaw and/or a 'reverse overbite' (or class III malocclusion). A case of

When a deadly non-missile object like a teta gets impacted in the maxillofacial region, the management becomes challenging. This region has a complex anatomical structure with high vascularity and contains vital structures like the orbit and airway. To avoid ophthalmic or neurological abnormalities in addition to the risk of infection and bleeding, accurate clinical and radiological diagnosis and optimal surgical techniques with postoperative management are crucial. This paper emphasizes the significance of careful preoperative planning and a concerted effort of the multidisciplinary team in m

The effect of thalidomide on mandibular development is unclear. In this study, thalidomide was delivered to pregnant rabbits from the 8th to 14th day of gestation. Then, embryos were harvested for examination on the 16th day (GD16), 20th day (GD20) and 24th day (GD24) of gestation. The results showed obvious hemorrhage and hematoma on one side of the craniofacial region in 50 % of the thalidomide-treated embryos and obvious hemorrhage and hematoma on both sides of the craniofacial region in 50 % of the thalidomide-treated embryos at GD16. Histological examination showed soft tissues and mandib

BACKGROUND: Oblique facial clefts, also known as Tessier clefts, are severe orofacial clefts, the genetic basis of which is poorly understood. Human genetics studies revealed that disruption in SPECC1L resulted in oblique facial clefts, demonstrating that oblique facial cleft malformation has a genetic basis. An important step toward innovation in treatment of oblique facial clefts would be improved understanding of its genetic pathogenesis. The authors exploit the zebrafish model to elucidate the function of SPECC1L by studying its homolog, specc1lb.
METHODS: Gene and protein expression anal

The medical profession today, has the choice of many imaging techniques for documenting, investigating, assessing or planning treatment. Amongst them, the laser surface imaging system is emerging as a useful tool to capture and store digital data for reformatting into a three-dimensional computer model. The laser scanning system captures only the surface morphology of a subject, and is highly appropriate for the evaluation of surface morphological changes of craniofacial disorders. Although originally acquired for the study of facial anthropometry, many other clinical uses have been found for

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Various etiologies have been theorized for the development of congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis (CNPAS). Imaging possibly implicates abnormal fusion of the midline palatal suture and deficient lateral growth of the midface in affected neonates.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center, retrospective study was performed at a tertiary care pediatric hospital involving neonates and infants between 0 and 90 days of life. Maxillofacial CT scans of patients were reviewed. Abnormality of the palatal suture and midface transverse dimensions were measured and analyzed i

Slowly progressing nasal obstructions are usually caused by otorhinolaryngological abnormalities but are sometimes caused by maxillofacial disorders. Two patients, a boy aged 13 years and a man aged 56 years, had unilateral nasal obstruction. The boy was diagnosed with a dentigerous cyst in the maxillary sinus and the man had a nasolabial cyst (Klestadt's cyst). Both patients were treated with trans-oral enucleation and fully recovered.

BACKGROUND: Airway management of the maxillofacial gunshot injury constitutes a critical decision and an area that requires review in the context of civilian injuries. Most of our knowledge is extrapolated from military experience, which constitutes a different trauma patient group. This paper reports a retrospective survey of airway status in relation to maxillofacial gunshot injuries. The objective is to correlate clinical findings with treatment decisions.
METHODS: A survey was done of 11,622 archived maxillofacial surgery records (1987-1992) in the three academic hospitals in Johannesburg

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate oral and maxillofacial outcomes in children with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) and the … dren with CZS had a higher frequency of problems related to breastfeeding, low weight, and oral and maxillofacial abnormalities compared with healthy children.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: The phenomenon of vessel pedicle ossification is a noteworthy aspect of the repair and reconstruction of maxillofacial defects. Imaging findings typically reveal high-density shadows within the vascular pedicle pathway, which may be managed through conservative observation or surgical intervention as deemed appropriate.
ABSTRACT: Vessel pedicle ossification is a relatively uncommon complication associated with the reconstruction of oral and maxillofacial tissue defects using free tissue flap repair. In this paper, we report a case of pedicle ossification and conduct a co

BACKGROUND: Surgical removal of oral cancer results in tissue abnormalities, deformities, and reduced mobility; these problems can lead to esthetic disturbance, dysphagia, dysarthria, and masticatory dysfunction affecting oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL).
AIM: Research was conducted to evaluate OHRQoL in surgically treated oral cancer patients after prosthetic rehabilitation.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A total of 120 patients who underwent surgical resection for oral cancer were assessed in this research. Two dentists who were skilled maxillofacial prosthetists handled the maxillofac

Hallermann-Streiff syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by craniofacial malformations, sparse hair, eye abnormalities, dental defects, degenerative skin changes, and short stature. The syndrome has many implications for dental treatment. Patients typically present with multiple missing and poorly formed teeth. The purpose of this case report is to discuss the overall management of a patient with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome by oral maxillofacial surgery, orthodontic treatment, and prosthodontic reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Prompt recognition of cervical fractures in patients with facial fractures is of prime importance, as failure to diagnose such injuries carries a significant risk of causing neurologic abnormalities, long-term disabilities, and even death. The aim of this retrospective case study is to describe the different patterns of combinations of maxillofacial and cervical spine (C-spine) injuries to provide guidance in diagnosis and care of patients with combined injuries.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The trauma directory of 1 academic institution was searched for records of 701 patients admitted wit

Orofacial digital syndromes are a heterogeneous group of rare malformative diseases, characterised by abnormalities of the oral cavity, maxillofacial region and digits. Orofacial digital syndromes are classified into ten types with orofacial digital syndrome type II, Mohr's syndrome being transmitted as autosomal recessive disorder. Here a case of a full term, female, born by lower segment caesarean section weighing 2.800 kg with respiratory distress, cyanosis, poly and syndactyly is reported.
